INFORMATION
In this video, the Pixar short film, ​For the Birds​ ​is used to point out
and teach several topics regarding nonverbal communication. This
part of the video explains how Bird A was affected by Bird B’s
proxemic level. Bird B’s intimate distance with Bird A affected Bird
A’s physical space and interfered with his territory, which made Bird
A react in an aggressive manner to regain their personal space and
territory.

INFORMATION
I work at the YMCA in West Chester. I typically work with children
from kindergarten-4th grade, however I have been put with younger
children before (infant-pre-k). In working with them, especially after
learning about this concept, I noticed myself and other teachers
struggling to keep babies’ and toddler’s attention and get them to
understand what we were saying, despite us using appropriate
language. This was because we often have to do many things at once,
like talk to one child while watching or playing with another child. The
child we would talk to did not understand or respond because we
were not looking at them, so they were not comprehending the whole
message.

My mom once married a man who was from Italy, which meant we met
his very Italian family. When I first meet people, I will shake their
hands typically and smile. However, this family would come in for a
kiss when meeting us, as that is a cultural greeting there. It was
interesting to get used to, but I realized that some of the
communication codes we use are not what everyone uses.
