The maritime industry continues to innovate and develop projects that are relevant and

useful not just to the industry itself but also to the environment. Leanship- Design and
Development of a High Fidelity Integrated Ship Management System for Matching Engine
Operations to Sea and Air Conditions is a research project that aims to reduce fuel consumption
as well as reduce the carbon dioxide release during a certain voyage. Reading through the article
of the research stated above, there are a lot of factors that needs to considered. The goal itself,
says a lot about saving resources, or in other words saving a lot of money. But it is also important
for this research to comply with the regulations that are set to the maritime industry. These
regulations are important because we are not just talking about business or resources but also
protecting the welfare of the people on board who will run the ship, meaning that whatever
technological advances that will be applied, safety should never be compromised. Good thing
that the IMO or the International Maritime Organization implemented the mandatory EEDI or
the Energy Efficiency Design Index and in this case EEDI played an important role in gathering
crucial data that will support the efficiency of the research project because it estimates the grams
of carbon dioxide per transport work or the environmental cost divided by the benefit for the
society. That is why there is still a continuous assessment of what are the possible risk that needs
to be addressed in order to develop more or improve the system. In this research project,
Technical Innovation was also emphasized wherein it was stated there that it pushes the
boundaries over and beyond current leading-edge fuel and emission reduction technology.
Meaning, innovation doesn’t just end with creating something new but also about developing
and implementing it with proper knowledge and dynamic ability because changes in the
processes may definitely occur so one must be fully equipped with knowledge and skills in order
to pass different challenging situations. It is a challenge to test this research project for it is not
just a point-view basis but it is about looking at the operation holistically considering the socio-
economic, business and environmental factors. Decision support system is also important in the
process of the development of the project because in this area it presents and analyzes data that
contributes to the improvement process of the research. The continuous and fast growth of the
maritime industry means that it needs to cope with the fast pace technological advances to
provide positive outcome to the operations of the business. The project of saving fuel and
reducing carbon dioxide release will result to a significant breakthrough in the maritime industry
for it will serve as a call-for-a-change because maritime industry is known for its extreme
ecological impacts.
