The dam is the second of three built by BC Hydro under
the terms of the Columbia River Treaty. At the peak of the
project in the winter of 1966-67, over 1,600 people were
working to build the dam.
The dam is about 52 metres high, with a crest length of
853.4 metres. Of this, 366 metres of the crest length is con-
crete dam and the rest is earth fill dam. The completed
dam structure required a total of 583,000 cubic yards of
concrete, 2.3 million bags of cement, 5,250 tons of con-
crete aggregate and 7,500 tons of structural steel.

accepted the UBCM Community Excellence
Award in Sustainability for its Columbia Ave-
nue Complete Streets Project.
These awards are given to projects/programs
that incorporate a long-term sustainability lens
by considering cultural, social, economic and
environmental issues in planning, policy and
practice. The eight million Columbia Avenue
Complete Streets Project turned the city’s main
roadway into a complete street which includes:
• Raised bike lanes traveling in both
directions (separated from the main
vehicular travel lanes by a roll-over
concrete curve)
• A three meter wide sidewalk which
improves the walking experience for
pedestrians
• A modular, suspended pavement
system which provides rainwater
management through absorption,
evapotranspiration and interception.
This system supports the health and
growth of many trees that were planted
as part of this project
• Pre-serviced lots for future
development
