On the heels of this year’s return to
school, children across the country
have started getting back into their
routines, spending their days with
friends and classmates. But unfortu-
nately, a lot of our nation’s youth also
find themselves spending time with
bullies and aggressors.
October 17 – 23 is National School
Safety Week and this year, the Canada
Safety Council’s message is simple:
there can be no tolerance for bully-
ing. Whether you’re a student, an
educator, a parent or a caregiver, we
all have a duty to keep children safe.
According to the Promoting Rela-
tionships & Eliminating Violence
Network (PREVNet), a network of
researchers and organizations shed-
ding a light on bullying prevention,
75% of people say they have been
affected by bullying. This can take
shape either as a victim, a bystander
or an aggressor and includes three
primary forms of bullying:
• Physical bullying, which
can take the form of hitting,
destruction of property and
physical humiliation
• Verbal bullying, which can
include teasing, threats and
name-calling
• Social bullying, which can
include rumours, gossip and
exclusion with the intent of
lowering the victim’s social
worth among their peers

The dam is the second of three built by BC Hydro under
the terms of the Columbia River Treaty. At the peak of the
project in the winter of 1966-67, over 1,600 people were
working to build the dam.
The dam is about 52 metres high, with a crest length of
853.4 metres. Of this, 366 metres of the crest length is con-
crete dam and the rest is earth fill dam. The completed
dam structure required a total of 583,000 cubic yards of
concrete, 2.3 million bags of cement, 5,250 tons of con-
crete aggregate and 7,500 tons of structural steel.

Richard (Dick) McMillan

It is with great sadness that the family of Dick
McMillan announce the sudden passing of a
dear brother, uncle and friend in Warfield on
October 1, 2019 at the age of 76. He was born
in Geraldton, Ontario on November 5, 1942
but moved to the Kootenays at an early age.
Dick was predeceased by his parents Ralph
and Jean McMillan of Salmo. He is survived
by his sisters Doris (Ray) Dimock of Salmo
and Betty (Colin) Radcliffe of Nelson,
Funeral arrangements are under the care of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services.
one brother Dave McMillan of Trail and
numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dick was involved in many community or-
ganizations and activities and always put
others ahead of himself. He will be missed.
A funeral service will be held
at the Salvation Army Church
in Trail, BC on October 26 at
11:00 am.

Jennings-Bates
struggles to get a
podium
The national series rally, hosted
in Merritt, BC just happened to be
scheduled on a weekend that her-
alded an early return to winter in
British Columbia and the big ques-
tion was what tires to use.
The event started slow for the
team with Jennings-Bates frustrated
by his pace on the first two night
stages. Ready for a fresh start the
next morning and ready to push, the
team arrived early to find the car had
developed clutch issues. “With the
adage of never give up in our minds
I looked around for another Evo that
belonged to a volunteer for another
team and were fortunate enough
to find the owner who agreed to let
us steal a part from his car until the
end of the day” said driver Mark
Jennings-Bates.
The team went on to set top six
times, finish 12th overall and claim
a podium in Friday night’s regional
event! Shortly after the event the
team also found out that co-driver
Jackie Jennings-Bates had unknow-
ingly run the event with a detached
retina which required emergency
surgery as soon as they arrived home.
