ESE Conventional Revision TEST – 4
Time Allowed: 90 min Maximum Marks: 100

INSTRUCTIONS
Please read each of the following instructions carefully before
attempting questions:
Candidates should attempt THREE questions in all.
Question No.1 is compulsory. Out of the remaining THREE questions
attempt any TWO.

The number of marks carried by a part of a question is indicated against

it.

Answers must be written in ENGLISH only.

Unless otherwise mentioned, symbols and notations have their usual

standard meanings.

Assume suitable data, if necessary and indicate the same clearly.

Neat sketches may be drawn, wherever required.

All parts and sub-parts of a question are to be attempted together in the

answer book.
Any pages left blank in the answer book must be clearly struck out.

01(a). Draw a neat sketch of toggle press mechanism and

explain its working.
(10 M)

01(b). A beam AB of 6m span carries a distributed load of

varying intensity as shown in the figure below.
Calculate the deflection at the centre of the beam.
Load intensity at support B = 1.2 kN/m,
EI = 420109 N-mm2.

01(c). Find the optimal order quantity for a product for which
the price breaks are as follows:

Quantity Unit cost (Rs.)

0  Q  500 10
500  Q  750 9.25
750  Q 8.75

The monthly demand for the product is 200 units,

storage cost is 25% of the unit cost and cost of ordering
is Rs. 100/-. (15 M)

02(a). A project consists of nine activities whose time

estimates (in weeks) and other characteristics are given
below:
Activity Preceding Time estimates (weeks)
activity Most Most Most
optimistic likely pessimistic
A - 2 4 6
B - 6 6 6
C - 6 12 24
D A 2 5 8
E A 11 14 23
F B,D 8 10 12
G B,D 3 6 9
H C,F 9 15 27
I E 4 10 16
(i) Show the PERT network for the project.
(ii) Identify the critical activities.
(iii) What is the expected project completion time and
its variance?
(iv) What is the probability of completing the project
one week before the expected time ?
(v) If the project is required to be completed by
December 31 of a given year and the manager
wants to be 95% sure of meeting the deadline,
when should he start the project work?
(vi) A penalty of Rs 15,000 per week is to be imposed
on the contractor if the project is not completed in
36 weeks. What is the probability that he has to
pay a penalty? a penalty of Rs 45,000?

02(b). The disc of a torsional pendulum has moment of inertia

of 600 kg-cm2 and is immersed in a viscous fluid. The
brass shaft attached to it is of 10 cm diameter and
40 cm long. When the pendulum is vibrating, the
observed amplitudes on the same side of the rest
position for successive cycles are 9o, 6o and 4o.
Determine (a) logarithmic decrement
(b) damping torque at unit velocity , and
(c) the periodic time of vibration
Assume for the brass shaft.
[G = 4.4  1010 N/m2 ]
(15 M)

03(a). In an epicyclic gear train as shown in figure given

below, the arm A is fixed to the shaft S. The wheel B
having 100 teeth rotates freely on the shaft S and the
wheel F with 150 teeth is separately driven. If the arm
A runs at 200 rpm and the wheel F at 100 rpm in the
same direction,
Find (i) Number of teeth on wheel C
(ii) Speed of wheel B.

03(b). A solid circular shaft 200mm in diameter has the same

cross sectional area as a hollow circular shaft of the
same material with inside diameter of 150mm. For the
same maximum shear stress, determine the ratio of
torque transmitted by the hollow shaft to that by the
solid shaft. Also compare the angle of twist in the
above shafts for equal length and same maximum shear
stress. From the above results, what will be your
conclusions regarding strength and stiffness of the two
shafts?
(10M)

03(c). A gear with 42 teeth and a pinion with 21 teeth are cut
with involute teeth of pressure angle 20 and module
pitch 6 mm. The addendum of each wheel is 6 mm.
Find
(i) Length of the arc of contact
(ii) Number of pairs of teeth in contact
(iii) The angle turned through by the pinion, while any
one pair of teeth is in contact.
(iv) Maximum velocity of sliding on either side of if
pinion speed is 300 rpm.

04(a). Compute the total elongation caused by an axial load of

100 kN applied to a flat bar 20 mm thick, tapering from
a width of 120 mm to 40 mm in a length of 10 m as
shown in figure. Assume E=200 GPa.

(10 M)

04(b). Explain the term ‘interference’ as applied to involute

gears, How could it be eliminated?
Two standard 20 involute gears have module of 5 mm.
The pinion has 15 teeth while the gear has 60 teeth.
Addendum is equal to module.
(i) Show that the gear will interfere with the pinion
(ii) To what value should the pressure angle be
increased in order to eliminate the interface?
