ENGR 1212: Engineering Fundamentals II Homework #2

Homework #2
LINEAR/EXPONENTIAL/POWER FUNCTIONS
1. The density of air is known to change with the temperature of the air. In a lab test, the
following data were measured and recorded.

Temperature (K) Density (kg/m3)

200 1.88
400 1.17
600 0.73
800 0.45
1000 0.28

Given that the exponential equation (𝒚 = 𝒃𝒆𝒎𝒙 ) would be the best fit for the given data,
determine the coefficients of the exponential equation that best represents the density
as function of temperature.
STANDARD NORMAL DISTRIBUTION USING Z-TABLES
2. A set of IQ scores are normally distributed with a mean of 125 and a standard deviation
of 8.
a) What is the probability that a person chosen at random will have an IQ score less
than 110?
b) What is the probability that a person chosen at random will have an IQ score
between 115 and 130?
c) In a class of 50 students, how many of them are expected to achieve a score of
118 or higher?

BREAK EVEN ANALYSIS

3. The Wico company is considering their choice between two different production processes for
manufacturing widgets that they aim to sell at $9 each. The following table shows the total fixed
costs and variable costs for each of the different production processes.

Production Process 1 Production Process 2

Total Fixed Costs $10,000 $5,000
Total Variable Costs (per unit) $4 $6

a) Calculate the number of widgets that need to be manufactured to break even for each process.
b) How much profit is earned if 3000 widgets were manufactured and sold using each of the two
different processes?
c) How many units must the company sell to achieve a profit of $6,000 using each of the two
different processes?

ENGR 1212: Engineering Fundamentals II Homework #2

d) Which process should be used for manufacturing the widgets assuming that the company is
expecting to sell at least 3000 widgets every year? State the reason for your decision.

BREAK EVEN ANALYSIS WITH APPLICATION OF NORMAL DISTRIBUTION

4. Acme Technology is a business that manufactures shafts which can only be sellable if the
diameter is between 1.5 and 1.6 inches. The machinist that was hired makes these parts
with an average diameter of 1.55 inches and a standard deviation of 0.04 inches.
The machinist is paid $20/hour and can make 5 shafts per hour. The cost of the materials
is $0.40 per shaft and is fully recoverable. If the total fixed costs are $5000 and each
sellable shaft is sold for $10, find the number of shafts that must be sold to break even.
