Unit 4 Lesson Planning

Module 1 Classroom Management

TASK

Write a list of 5 of the most important ways to ensure that you achieve
the overall aim of involving all the students all the time when you are
teaching EFL. Explain each point on your list in 2-3 sentences.

1. Look at all the students in the class –

A good teacher ensures that his/her students are involved all the
time and that goal is easier to achieve with the help of eye contact.
Looking at all the students in the class is very important for effective
communication. Keeping eye contact with the students let them know
that the teacher is interested in them, fully aware of their presence, and
is giving them an important role in the classroom.

2. Include everyone –

Teachers must ensure that everyone in the class is given equal

attention and opportunity to be asked, ask questions, and express their
ideas that even those students seated at the back and the wings must
be included or acknowledged all the time, as class participation is an
important aspect of student learning. When students speak up in class,
they learn to express their ideas. When they ask questions, they learn
how to acquire information to enhance their own understanding of a
topic.

3. Seating arrangement –

Seating arrangements impact on communication and the learning

process of students, so teacher must ensure clear visibility for every
student in the classroom. When a teacher is conducting discussions, a
circle or circular arrangement can be suitable to facilitate the flow of
ideas, thoughts, and expressions that students have a clear view of the
person expressing their opinions and teachers find it easy to control the
discussion and can also motivate passive or laid back students to pitch
in. When audio-visual aids are being used, a semi-circular arrangement
can be effective as teachers can maintain eye contact with all students
and also check to see that they are being attentive.

4. Encouragement –

There’s no denying that people do better when they feel better

about themselves, and in saying that, using encouragement can be a
powerful tool to reach discouraged students and motivate them to do
better and feel better. With teachers’ help to involve students in the
decision-making process, give students honest feedback, and use
encouragement to motivate positive behavior are good ways to give
students a boost of encouragement. And with that, students will not only
be academically successful, but successful in life as well.

5. Student names –

Our names are our identities. Students feel valued and

acknowledged when teachers take time to learn their names. Name
recognition is so personal that intentionally mispronouncing someone’s
name is a passive-aggressive form of disrespect, so teachers must
correctly pronounce the names of his/her students.
