VAI Post Primary Schools Information Pack 2011


Transition Year Girls SpikeBall Leaders Award Programme

Applications are invited each May from schools to get involved in the VAI Transition Year SpikeBall
Leaders Award Programme. This programme has been extremely successful over the past number
of years and helps to develop leadership skills in TY students, creates links with the local
community while also developing the sport on a local level.

How It Works

• The Volleyball Association of Ireland (VAI) deliver a 6 hour TY Leadership course to TY Girl
Students on how to introduce an adapted Volleyball game (SpikeBall) to primary schools in
the local community and junior students in their own school.
• The programme includes information on coaching, refereeing, administration and PR.
• The TY leaders coach the game in local Primary schools over a 6 week period.
• The TY leaders help organise a SpikeBall Blitz for all the pupils involved.
• On completion of the programme the TY Leaders receive a VAI/ISC SpikeBall Leaders Award
Certificate.
• The VAI will monitor and evaluate the programme.
• Further Education opportunities for TY leaders.

TY Leaders Schedule for Teachers

Contact 1: Meet VAI TY Team/identify local primary schools. Prioritise top 3 feeder schools. TY
Application Form & Pre-Course Reading Materials for students. Discuss time
frame/equipment/venue/etc. Agree Pre-Course Reading Materials test date and
Course Delivery date.

Contact 2: Meet with TY’s - give out Pre-Course Reading Materials and Course Application
Form.

Contact 3: Non-Volleyball Schools: TY Team gives Pre-Course Reading Materials test and
delivers Skills Training Session.
Volleyball Schools: PE Teacher gives Pre-Course Reading Materials test and
delivers Skills Training Session.

Contact 4: Course Delivery. (Full School Day) Suggest 1-2 week gap between Skills Session &
Course date.

Prior to Skills Session:


All Students who are taking part in the course must have watched the SpikeBall DVD and
read the TY Leaders Pre-course Reading Material Booklet.

1st week after Course Delivery:

Remind students to familiarise themselves with customised 1st Coaching Session Plan.
Check they are practicing skills for demonstration and organising sessions

No changes to be made by students to the original assigned coaching groups unless sanctioned by TY
team /Tutor. Max 3 coaches per group.

 Complete TY Coaching Arrangements Form and return to VAI Office

Week 1: Quick check on progress/remind students to contact TY Team re any changes which affect
the coaching times etc./remind to plan ahead to next session. Remind Liaison to send in Progress
Report to TY Team.

Week 2: Facilitate a meeting re Blitz Organisation as on their TY Time Schedule.

Week 3: Facilitate a meeting re Blitz Organisation as on their TY Time Schedule. Check that Blitz jobs are
assigned; the article has been sent to the local media; remind students to source local sponsorship.

Remind Liaison to send in Progress Report to TY Team. Continue to monitor.

Week 5: Facilitate meeting re finalising Blitz details. Alert them re timing of games (Buzzer
System!)/Net height 1.85m/Scoring system +,- etc. See Blitz Pack

Week 6: Ensure all finishing touches are in place for the Blitz.

Week 7: Be available for Blitz day! (Not to work, but visible as a support to the students). Ensure the
Primary Teacher’s Evaluation Forms are given to teachers, collect them and return with students
Review and Evaluation Forms, (signed) to VAI Office

Monitor means that the students know you are aware of what is or what is not happening. Should
any problems occur, you can contact TY Team and we will deal with them immediately.

It is important that you have a hands on contact with the group to support and guide them.

Other Issues:

 Exceptional Leaders
 Students who do not comply with criteria will be withdrawn from course
 TY’s visit schools – introduce themselves, check venue, equipment etc. Prepare detail for first
session.
 Accountable for return of surplus equipment.
 Sign Delivery of Equipment Form
 The integrity of the course is of utmost importance at all times.

Coaching the Volley


(Extract taken from TY Logbook)

 Warm-up & Stretch


 Review the skills from the previous session in a game situation.
Introduce the Volley
 “Now we are going to introduce you to a new Skill”
 “The name of the new skill is called the Volley”
 “It is used on the 1st. & 3rd.touch when the ball is High”
 SHOW HAND POSITION – “Put your hands on your hips –spread your fingers –
now take your hands above your hairline (shape of a ball)” etc....
 “Now we will show you a demo” - Use the BEST demonstrator
 Keep repeating during the demonstration “This called the VOLLEY and it is used
on the 1ST & 3RD TOUCH when the ball is HIGH

You MUST know the number of students you have so you can divide into groups.

DIVIDE the group into groups of 3 or 4 (depending on the number you have)
 Give 2 or 3 groups of 3 or 4 to each coach at their specific spot on the net.
 Start the drill within 10 secs.
 Rotate after 3 attempts or rotate each time if in groups of 4

Coaching the Volley

 “Now we are going to work on a FOCUS point


 “Want you to watch....”
Choose from one of the following Focus Points:
o Ready position
o Hands are at your hairline before the ball comes over the net
o Straighten your arms to the ceiling
o Play the ball with the pads of your fingers not the palms
 Show demo AGAIN and continue to say “watch......” whatever the Focus Point is
you have chosen

You MUST know the number of students you have so you can divide into groups.

Coaching the Volley

“Now we are going to put the Volley into the game”

 “Remember the game we played earlier”


 “We are going to play again only this time”
 “The 1st & 3rd touch will be a volley” ( no Spike or Dig because we are practicing
the volley)

You MUST know the number of students you have so you can decide how many teams you can
have!!
If the number of teams you can have is 4 - then divide as follows:
 Divide into 4 teams (apple /orange/pear/banana etc)
 Send each group to a half court.
 Court 1 is playing against Court 2.
 Try to get 9 touches in a row before the other court does.
 Then Switch teams and all play again.

All coaches give positive FEEDBACK. Be enthusiastic and energised

 Call “STOP – WALK back and put the balls in “trap” & stand on the line.”
 Ask quiz questions and cool down!

Sport Education Module

The VAI have developed a new Sport Education module to assist Physical Education teachers in
teaching Volleyball through this Instructional Model.

Depending on the previous experience of the class, the teacher can decide to teach the module
through either SpikeBall or Volleyball.

A series of 8 lesson plans is included for both SpikeBall and Volleyball


• The SpikeBall lesson plans are designed for students that have little or no previous
experience of either SpikeBall or Volleyball
• The Volleyball lesson plans are designed for students that have some previous experience
of either SpikeBall or Volleyball

One of the key objectives of the module is to present the sport as a FUN activity for students to
get involved in.

The lesson plans are designed to engage the student actively throughout each session. During the
SpikeBall/Volleyball season students learn about and experience the various roles that are
necessary in a club environment and have an opportunity to fulfil one of these roles.

Demonstrate Exercise Allow a few attempts of each exercise
o Throw and catch the ball in pairs using a two handed underarm throw from different distances.
o Using a high underarm throw, throw the ball to partner who holds hands up over head. Try and
throw the ball accurately so the ball lands in their hands without them having to move.
o Bounce ball off floor for partner to catch ball over head.
o Player 1 stands with a ball with their back to the net. Player 2 stands on the end line with their
back facing into court. Player 1 shouts “go” and throws the ball high into the centre of the court.
On hearing the call player 2 turns and runs to try and catch the ball before it hits the ground.
o Player 1 stands with legs straddled on the end line. Player 2 stands directly behind them with a
ball. Player 2 rolls the ball between Player 1’s legs. Player 1 must chase and stop the ball by
sitting on it before it reaches a certain point.

Skill Card – The Hit
The ‘Hit’ is also called the ‘Spike’ and is used as an attacking shot to play the ball over the net.
The aim of the ‘Hit’ is to win the rally by playing the ball with power into space on opponents’
court.

Teachers 6 a side Volleyball manual

The teachers 6 a side Volleyball manual is designed for teachers and provides a comprehensive
guide to 6 a side Volleyball for beginners.

The manual contains:

• Drills and small sided games ideas
• Volleyball systems of play

• Blitz organisation
• Refereeing

A 3 hour practical workshop is available to introduce teachers to 6 a side Volleyball. Check the VAI

Team Composition
o Each team must consist of a minimum of 6 players and maximum of 12 players, 6 players
on court and a maximum of 6 players on the substitute bench.
o A team is deemed incomplete and forfeits the match if it us unable to field 6 players on
court
Team Line up
o At the start of each set a team line up/rotation is submitted by the coach to the
referee/scorer
o This line up contains the numbers of the starting 6 players in the positions that they will
start the game in.

o Players must be positioned within own court and in correct rotation order at the moment
the ball is contacted for each serve.
o After the ball is contacted for serve players may move to any court position they wish
during the rally but they must always return to the correct rotational order before the next
serve.

moment the ball is contacted for serve.

Rotation
o A team must rotate when they regain the right to serve.
o Players rotate one position clockwise
o Service must be made in correct rotational order for the duration of each set

Substitutions
o Each team is allowed a maximum of 6 substitutions per set
o A player on the starting line up may be substituted off the court, only once in a set, and can
re enter the court only to their previous position in the line up.
o A substitute may enter the game in place of a player on the starting line up only once per
set, he/she can only be substituted back off the court by the player they replaced.
o That substitute can then play no further part in that set.
o The example illustrated below counts as two substitutions in a set.

Time outs
o Each team is allowed two time outs per set
o Each time out lasts 30 seconds
o The time out is requested by the coach or game captain to the 2nd referee
o During the time out all players must remain off the court

Scoring system
o Rally scoring system is used in Volleyball.
o A point is scored at the end of each play regardless of which team served.
o If serving team wins the rally, they gain a point and continue to serve
o If receiving team wins the rally, they gain a point and the right to serve.
o A Volleyball match is either the best of 3 sets or the best of 5 sets.
o A set is won by a team which first scores 25 points with a minimum lead of 2 points.
o A deciding set (3rd set in best of 3 set match or 5th set in best of 5 set match) is played to 15
points with a minimum lead of two points.
o In the case of a 24 – 24 tie in a set, play is continued until a two point lead is achieved.
o Timed sets are often used in Volleyball tournaments and blitzes.

Practical workshops for teachers are run at various locations around the country during the school
year. Workshops available for teachers include:

SpikeBall is an adapted Volleyball game that provides a FUN introduction for children to the sport.
This 2-hour practical workshop aims to give Teachers the techniques, teaching methods and
confidence to introduce this game to their pupils, irrespective of any previous experience of the
sport.

SpikeBall Award Workshop

This 2-hour practical workshop is a follow on from the Introductory Workshop and aims to
increase Teachers’ technical and tactical knowledge of the game. Participants will be awarded with
a VAI Certified SpikeBall Teachers’ Award. Applicants for the SpikeBall Award must previously have
attended an Introduction to SpikeBall Workshop

6 a side Volleyball Workshop

This is a 3-hour workshop that introduces participants to teaching 6 a side Volleyball. Topics
covered in this workshop include; rules of the 6 a side game, basic Volleyball team systems and
tactics and how to design drills and small sided games. This course is ideal for teachers that are
interested in progressing students from playing SpikeBall to Volleyball.

VAI Coaching Courses

The VAI offer the following Coaching Courses:


• Introduction to Volleyball Coaching Award.
• Level 1 Volleyball Coaching Award.
These courses are jointly certified by the VAI and Coaching Ireland as part of the Coaching
Development Programme for Ireland.
