Applications are invited each May from schools to get involved in the VAI Transition Year SpikeBall
Leaders Award Programme. This programme has been extremely successful over the past number
of years and helps to develop leadership skills in TY students, creates links with the local
community while also developing the sport on a local level.
How It Works
• The Volleyball Association of Ireland (VAI) deliver a 6 hour TY Leadership course to TY Girl
Students on how to introduce an adapted Volleyball game (SpikeBall) to primary schools in
the local community and junior students in their own school.
• The programme includes information on coaching, refereeing, administration and PR.
• The TY leaders coach the game in local Primary schools over a 6 week period.
• The TY leaders help organise a SpikeBall Blitz for all the pupils involved.
• On completion of the programme the TY Leaders receive a VAI/ISC SpikeBall Leaders Award
Certificate.
• The VAI will monitor and evaluate the programme.
• Further Education opportunities for TY leaders.

The VAI have developed a new Sport Education module to assist Physical Education teachers in
teaching Volleyball through this Instructional Model.
Depending on the previous experience of the class, the teacher can decide to teach the module
through either SpikeBall or Volleyball.
One of the key objectives of the module is to present the sport as a FUN activity for students to
get involved in.
The lesson plans are designed to engage the student actively throughout each session. During the
SpikeBall/Volleyball season students learn about and experience the various roles that are
necessary in a club environment and have an opportunity to fulfil one of these roles.
A sample of some of the resources from the Sport Education resource pack is
included overleaf:
Week 1 • Assign teams, home courts and team roles for the season.
• Outline class management routines for the season.
• Introduction to SpikeBall through 2 v 2 catching and throwing games.
• Introduce the ‘Hit’/Spike.
• Tactical focus of looking for space on opponent’s court.
• 3 touch rule, net touch rule and 2nd touch rules introduced.
• Guided and independent practice in home courts.
