Instructions
Read the questions carefully.
Section A comprises of one mark questions. Section B comprises of one and a half mark and
two mark questions. Section C comprises of two and a half and three mark questions. Section
D comprises of three and a half mark, five mark and six mark questions.
All your diagrams should be neat and made with pencil only.
SECTION A
A1. Two objects A and B are placed in water. Object A floats i.e. it is stationary with some portion immersed [1]
in water, while Objects B starts sinking.
(i) Which one of these two objects has balanced forces acting on it?
(ii) Complete the force diagram for object A showing the missing force/forces along with the
magnitude.

SECTION B
B2. “Three type of friction forces can exist between two solid surfaces. One of them is called static
friction.” [1]
i.
B8. When balloon is rubbed with hair, the balloon becomes +ve charged. This balloon is repelled by
another charged object which is a straw.
i. Does the straw have +ve or –ve charge? Give reason. [1]
ii. What charge does hair develop? Why? [1]
B15. i) Two charged objects are attracted towards each other. What can you tell about possible charges [1]
the two objects may be having?
ii) During thunderstorms, clouds develop –ve charge on the lower sides. Due to this, which charge
[1]
develops on the surface of earth and why?

B16. i) Define displacement. Why is it represented by an arrow and not just a straight line? [2]
ii) Is it possible that a person walks 200 meters but his displacement is zero? Give reason.
B18. A person walks 10 meters north. She then turns left and runs 20 meters westwards.
i) Show the motion on a diagram and draw the displacement arrow. [1]
ii) Find the magnitude of the displacement. [1]
B20. What causes the following characteristics of sound to change? Describe the relation clearly. [2]
i. Pitch
ii. Loudness

C2. The diagram shows three vases each with the same base area. Each vase contains water of the same
depth.
iii) When pressed against smooth surfaces like glass, why do suction cups get stuck so strongly?
[1]
C4. i. A box of weight 50Kg has a rectangular base of 20 cm by 10 cm. Calculate the pressure acting [2]
on the area. Show stepwise working.
ii. Tell two possible changes that you can make to the above situation to further increase the [1]
pressure on ground.
SECTION D
D1. A car’s engine generates a force of 1000 N to push the car ahead. Frictional force of 200 N acts from
the road surface.
i) Draw a force diagram depicting this situation. Also show the net force in the diagram. [1.5]
ii) If the car’s speed is 50 km/hr, will the speed remain constant or increase or decrease in this
situation? [0.5]
iii) The car then enters a region where the frictional force changes to 1500 N. Redraw the force
diagram depicting the new situation along with the net force.

iv) In this new situation, will the car’s speed remain constant or increase or decrease?
[0.5]
iii. A lighted candle is placed in front of a loudspeaker that is making a loud, steady note. The
candle flame vibrates because of the sound.
a) In the diagram above, draw an arrow to show the direction in which sound travels to [0.5]
reach the flame.
b) How will the flame vibrate (choose the correct option):
[0.5]
Option 1: up and down
Option 2: right and left
iv. Compare the speed of sound in solids with that in gases. [1]
