PROPOSED TITLE

ENHANCING THE COMPETENCIES OF TEACHERS AND PUPILS IN


MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS TOWARDS MTAP

RATIONALE

In our society, Mathematics holds a position of great importance. It is not only reflective
of technology usage but also of application on how man understands and controls his
environment. Basic Mathematics competencies on subject contents and computation of word-
problems are essential to an average person in a real practical sense. In making decision
involving daily activities: buying, selling, budgeting, computing and spending call upon man’s
mathematical skills to help him arrive at rational decisions.
This world is full of problems. And life without problem is unconceivable. In a
democratic way of life, it is assumed that an individual must know how to solve his problems
intelligently and expeditiously. In school, pupils are taught of subject contents and trained to
solve problems.
Kilpatrick (1978) argued that problem solving is perennially a popular topic for research
in mathematics education probably because most people recognize both the centrality of problem
solving a goal of mathematical instruction and the difficulty of teaching other people how to
solve mathematical problems.
In spite of the developments in this field. It is significant to note that through the years of
teaching mathematics, researchers have expressed concern about the difficulty of teaching
problem solving.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aimed to find out the skills gained of teacher-respondents in teaching
mathematical concepts. This study, specifically will answer the following questions:
1. What are the skill-needs of teacher-respondents in teaching mathematical concepts?
2. What are the actions/strategies used to enhance the skill-needs of teacher-respondents in
teaching mathematical concepts?
3. What are the results of these actions/strategies on the teacher-respondents?
4. What is the increase of pupils’ performance in the Division Final test using the criterion
referenced results? Using the norm-referenced results?

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The subjects of the study are the Grade III teachers of Bautista Central School.
This research will center only on the enhancement of teachers competencies in teaching
mathematical concepts to pupils so that the latter can improve their skills in understanding these
concepts and apply them in problem solving.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

To enhance the competencies of teachers in teaching mathematical concepts to Grade III


pupils of Bautista Central School in solving 1-step word problems involving the four
fundamental operations.
