LEARNING OBJECTIVE (describe the independent work):

By the end of the lesson my students will be able to:

 Understand we do not always starting counting from the number 1.
 Identify missing numbers in a sequence.

CFU: I say, you say

PREVIEW OR REVIEW (activate prior knowledge):

I will show the interactive video at the beginning of the lesson to introduce the topic of counting from a given number.

CFU: Students are counting along with me. Students are engaged with the video and tasks.

EXPLAIN (What, Why, How):

What: Students will be counting from given numbers. Students will be counting objects.

Why: Students need this skill to be able to understand future lessons in addition.

How: Students will work in their Go math chapter books to count certain objects as well as write their numbers up from a
given number. Student will follow along as I write on the smartboard. I will choose from a jar of popsicle sticks for students to
answer.

CFU: I will ask for oral responses from several students to ensure they are following along and understand what
they will be expected to do.
MODEL (teacher’s first-person inner thoughts):

I will begin with starting the video. They will repeat the essential question “How do I count forward to 10 from a given
number?”
We will talk about mailboxes to begin, student will observe one mailbox does not have a number. A multiple of students will
come up to the smartboard and answer questions from the video.

CFU: Students are counting along with me. Students are engaged with the video and tasks.

DEMONSTRATE (only if lesson uses a physical model)

CFU:

GUIDED PRACTICE (teacher works problems step-by-step at the same time):

After the video, students will turn to the corresponding page in their math books. They will count along with me to find the
missing numbers. Following the students will count the dots in each ten frame. I will ask them what they notice about each
ten frame. For the second part, Students will write their number in chronological order from a given number other than 1.

CFU: Students are able to follow along and write their numbers in order on in their books.

CLOSURE (teacher verifies that students know what, why, and how; identify who needs help):

We will watch our five minute math on the spot video to end the lesson. I will be watching for student’s involvement and
answers to see their level of understanding.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE:

Turn to your neighbor and count from a given number. I will look for students able to count to their neighbor.
