Chemistry Assessment Study Plan Correlation

[updated by RDW – 8/22/14]

NOTE: You need to include the title of the correlation table Excel file on the main ASP tab. The
format for that should be AUTHOR_TITLEABBREVIATION_EDITION_ASP

Project Goals and Batching Process

Product Structure
Assessment Study Plan (ASP) content is needed to cover each learning objective (or in cases
where learning objectives are not used, each section) within the text.

The content is delivered to the student in three stages of study and assets will need to be selected
by the SME to cover all of these stages for each learning objective (or text section):

1. ASP -- SAS
these include three to five (3-5) unless otherwise specified in the project instructions:
 SAS assessment questions that specifically correlate to the learning objective (or
text section)
2. ASP – Study Activities
these include as many as fit a learning objective (or text section) and may include:
 chapter text section from eBook (always include this item for each learning
objective or text section)
 Visualization, Simulation, and Tutor assessment questions
 Interactive Examples and ChemWork assessment questions
 Guided Tour and Strategy Map videos
 Mechanism Animations
 Roadmap Activities assessment questions
 How Do I Solve It assessment questions
 Thinkwell, Go Chem, and other types of videos
3. ASP – EOC (end of chapter)
these include three (3) unless otherwise specified in the project instructions:
 EOC assessment questions that specifically correlate to the learning objective (or
text section)

Project Batches for Each ASP Correlation

Because there are likely to be gaps in the assessment question coverage for the learning
objectives (or text sections), we are asking that each title be returned to us in batches
representing a third of the text chapters for a given title.

Each subsequent batch should include all chapters from the earlier batch as well.
Please do not wait for response to continue working ahead on the remaining chapters. The
chapter batches sent back to Cengage Learning will be reviewed for gaps in assessment question
coverage and may be sent back to your team with additional sources identified from which the
SMEs should select questions to cover the learning objectives (or text sections).

Correlating ASP Projects

GENERAL CORRELATION NOTE: When selecting assessment question content for use in
the correlation (this relates to both the SAS and EOC sections of a project), that asset should only
be used within the chapter/section with which it has been identified as being connected on the
provided asset lists. So, if the source from which you select the asset has identified that asset as
being connected to Chapter 3, Section 5 of the Kotz title – then that asset can only be selected for
inclusion within Chapter 3, Section 5 of the Kotz correlation. Do NOT move assessment
questions to different learning objectives (or text sections).
The exceptions to this rule are theVisualization, Tutor, Simulation, and Interactive
Example questions selected for the study plan portion of the ASP. Those questions may fit more
than one learning objective (or text section) and may be used more than once in a title. However,
these items must NOT be used more than one time within the SAME objective (or text section).

Part I: Navigating Geyser and Selecting SAS (pretest) Assessment Questions

Some things to note about SAS (pretest) question selection:

1. If there is no SAS (pretest) assessment question content that relates to a specific learning
objective (or text section), please note the learning objective on the correlation table and
indicate lack of coverage by leaving the question ID field blank and highlighting the row in
bright green.

2. Each SAS (pretest) question selected should only be used ONCE within the title.

3. Note the priority order of the provided question sources when selecting SAS (pretest)
assessment content. Seek questions in the primary source and only use alternate sources if
the primary source contains no questions applicable to the learning objective (or text
section). All SAS (pretest) question content selected from test banks should be highlighted
in yellow.

4. If SAS (pretest) question content exists for a learning objective, three to five (3-5)
questions should be selected for the objective – unless otherwise specified in the project
instructions.

The Chemistry Pre-Prod tier in Geyser is where all of the Chemistry assessment content is
housed.
Google Chrome MUST be the browser used when accessing Geyser. No other browsers will
interact with the Geyser system and an error message will appear if an attempt is made to use a
browser other than Chrome.

NOTE: Any technical issues accessing or using Geyser should be queried with our Solution
Center. The Cengage Learning Solution Center can be reached at helpme@cengage.com.
a. Log onto the Geyser system using your Geyser user name and password:

e. The ASP_Grid_Template_081914.xlsx document is the correlation table into which all of the
ASP project data must be recorded.
Within the ASP grid, the SME will need to complete the following columns as indicated:

Column A – Sort -- The numbers in this column should remain be sequential, as the data will be
used to sort as needed during the production process.

CONTENTS COLUMNS

Column B – Chapter -- Add the chapter title whenever a new chapter begins. Use the format
[Chapter # - Title] – i.e. Chapter 3 – An Introduction to Chemical Reactions in Aqueous and
Non-Aqueous Solution

Column C – Objective -- Add the learning objectives (use text section for those titles that do not
use objectives) in sequential order in this column. The learning objectives (or text sections)
should be taken from the specific source indicated by the Content Manager for the project.

NOTE: The format for learning objectives should always be initial cap/lc and no ending period.

At the conclusion of the correlation process, when all of the question gaps have been
resolved, the SME must number the objectives for each chapter consecutively starting with the
numeral one (1).
– i.e. 1.Understand and balance chemical equations

Column D – Pass – Add the pass percentage amount. The pass percentage should follow the
format:
 1 SAS (pretest question) = pass percentage of 100%
 3 SAS (pretest) questions = pass percentage of 66%
 4 SAS (pretest) questions = pass percentage of 50%
 5 SAS (pretest) questions = pass percentage of 60%

MAIN QUIZ QUESTIONS COLUMNS

Column E –Repository – Fill in the SAS question code data as shown in Geyser (for the
assessment questions being selected, it will most likely be owms01h – but please confirm this is
the case with each question being selected and include the correct code).
If the item is coming from one of the Geyser test bank courses, it also may have a
repository code identifying the test bank, -- i.e. ebbfulltb10t or zumfulltb09t.
Column F – Geyser Name – Include the complete SAS (pretest) question ID as it appears in
Geyser. That format in most cases will be gen.question.##### or something similar.
Alternate structures may appear as well -- i.e. sas.question.##### or ##.### when it is
content coming from a Geyser test bank repository.

Column G – Pool Quantity – LEAVE THIS COLUMN BLANK FOR THESE PROJECTS.
Part II: Using Asset Grids and Navigating Geyser to Supply Study Plan and
EOC Content

Study Plan Content

GENERAL CORRELATION NOTE: Assets selected for inclusion in the Study Plan portion
of the product ONLY should be selected from what is available on the title’s version of the
Chemistry Asset Inventory or other supplied asset lists for the title. These assets CANNOT be
assessment questions selected from the Geyser repository’s SAS (pretest) or EOC question
pools.

Some things to note about Study Plan assets:

1. Even in cases where there is no SAS assessment coverage for a learning objective (or text
section), the SME should still provide Study Plan coverage for that section and select all
assets that are applicable to fit the learning objective (or text section).

2. Regardless of what other Study Plan assets are available for a learning objective (or text
section), the SME always must include the eBook section of the text as the first asset in the
list of study activities.

3. The Visualization, Tutor, and Simulation question types CAN be used more than one
time per title, as they may relate to more than one learning objective (or text section)
within the book. Do not use these questions more than one time within the same learning
objective (or text section).
NOTE: The assets for the Study Plan portion of this correlation should be selected using the
various Excel asset lists provided for each title.

Columns H through K of the ASP_Grid_Template_081914.xlsx correlation table are where the

Study Plan data will be recorded.

ACTIVITIES COLUMNS

Column H – eBook Title – Fill in the eBook section title EXACTLY as it appears in the PDF
proofs of the eBook.

Column I – eBook ISBN -- Paste in ISBN code for eBook text title as provided by Cengage
Learning. The format of the ISBN should be 13-digit code and no dashes or spaces between the
numerals.

Column J – Video Title – This field should only be used for the Study Plan asset type Video.
The video prefix and title should be entered in this column for all videos. The designation video
should be used for Go Chemistry, Guided Tour, Strategy Map, and Thinkwell video assets.
Please use the format Video - [name of video as shown on asset table] when entering the
information.

Column K – Video HTTP – This field should only be used for the Study Plan asset type Video.
The URL of the video as copied from the asset table should be pasted in this column for all
videos.
Column L – Activity Title – The prefix and title of each Study Plan asset (with the exception of
Videos) should be entered in this column.

Please always follow these precise naming conventions when adding Study Plan activities:
 ChemWork - [name of asset as shown on asset table]

 Estimation - [name of asset as shown on asset table]

 How Do I Solve It - [name of asset as shown on asset table]

 Interactive Example - [name of asset as shown on asset table]

 Simulation - [name of asset as shown on asset table]

 Tutor - [name of asset as shown on asset table]

 Visualization - [name of asset as shown on asset table]

 Mechanism Activity - [name of asset as shown on asset table]

 Roadmap Activity - [name of asset as shown on asset table]

 Question – [dynamic name using Blooms Verbs created by SME based on question
topic]
Every asset type is not included in every text, so please refer to the Chemistry Asset Inventory
and other project asset tables that are provided for a project to determine which asset types are
used in a particular title.

Column M – Activity Title with Coding – The data from Column L should be copied into this
column in those instances where special characters exist in the activity title. (See the special
character coding document Special Character Coding ASPs.xlsx included with project materials
for all special coding to be used.)

Special coding in titles includes:

 italic text  equal sign
 subscript  degree sign
 superscript  en dash
 hyphen  em dash
 minus sign  prime or double prime symbol
 quotes  special letter characters (ô, ø, etc.)
 plus sign  Greek letters
 greater than sign
 less than sign

If a special character is encountered for which no coding option has been provided,
contact the Content Manager immediately and request coding be added for the special character.

Column N – Activity Repository – Fill in the data as follows:

 Study Activity content that is selected from the Chemistry Asset Inventory -- fill this field
with [author] ASP Simple Activity i.e.: Kotz ASP Simple Activity.
 Study Activity content that is selected from the Homework asset list – fill this field with
the repository name as shown on the Homework spreadsheet i.e. -- chemwork
 EOC assessment questions -- fill this field with the repository name as shown on the EOC
spreadsheet. i.e. – chem15r

Column O – Geyser Name – Include the complete EOC question ID as it appears in Geyser.
That format in most cases will be gen.question.##### or something similar.

Column P – Notes – Fill this in with “A-Head” for the eBook entry rows for each learning
objective (or text section). LEAVE THIS FIELD BLANK FOR ALL OTHER STUDY
ACTIVITY AND ASSESSMENT SELECTIONS.
EOC Content
Some things to note about EOC question selection:

1. The SME must pick one to three (1-3) EOC questions per learning objective (or text
section) -- unless otherwise specified in the project instructions.

2. Select only EOC question IDs that are not component pieces. Component questions parts
have Geyser IDs that end in a letter rather than a number.
i.e.: For question parsed.zum08h.04.009, the SME would select the question numbered
parsed.zum08h.04.009 to preview in the repository and this would be the question number
added to the correlation table. The SME would NOT select component variations of that
question, such as parsed.zum08h.04.009i or parsed.zum08h.04.009c.

3. The Homework grid for the title (included with the project materials) will list the EOC
question material for a title. This can be used as a starting point in finding question content
and the SME can then preview the question in Geyser to determine final fit, Geyser
question ID, and what final title should be assigned to the question.
4. Once an EOC question has been selected, it should not be selected for any of the other
chapters. Each EOC question may only be selected for use one time within a title.

5. The SME will need to provide a final topic name for each EOC question selected. Please
use consistent style and capitalization in the heads.
i.e: EOC question parsed.zum08h.02.001 is the Geyser ID for question 02.001 – the SME
will need to provide a topic-related name that can be used in place of 02.001 in the final
testing product, such as Convert Moles to Mass.
The topic title should always be structured to use Bloom’s taxonomy verbs. (See
Bloom’s taxonomy verb document included with the project materials.)
a. Log onto the Geyser system using your Geyser user name and password:
https://preprod.geyser.cl-cms.com/nav-
section.xqy?doc=%2Fgeyser%2Fchem%2Fbooks%2Fchem15r.xml&id=48683353
b. Click on the name abbreviation for the correct text title being correlated and you will see a list
of the chapters of EOC content for that title:
c. Scroll through the list of chapter questions until finding an applicable question number that
corresponds to potential questions as shown on the Homework grid for the title (remember NOT
to select component pieces that have question numbers ending in letter suffixes) :
d. Click on the question you wish to select and the viewer will open (make sure the FULL
preview button is selected on the top right of the screen to allow you to preview the question and
its answer):
Follow this precise naming convention when adding the EOC question title to Column L of the
ASP grid.

NOTE: The EOC questions should be the final items listed for Column L. They should follow
after any Study Plan activities listed there.

Question – [dynamic question title created by the SME based on the topic and using
Bloom’s taxonomy verbs]
(i.e: Question – Measuring Moles)

Some things to note about EOC question selection:

1. If there is no EOC assessment question content that relates to a specific learning

objective (or text section), please highlight the row in which the eBook section is listed for
that learning objective in bright green to indicate an EOC question gap.

Please contact your Content Manager with any specific project questions.
