Jean Piaget’s Cognitive Development Theory

1. Sensorimotor stage (Birth to 2 years old)

The infant starts understanding himself/ herself and reality or his movement and how things
work based from the environment. Learning is adapt by the means of observing and exploring it
themselves to make a better understanding on how things work. It is best shown by parents
demonstrations and their own observation.

2. Pre-Operational Stage (Ages 2-4 years old)

The child needs a concrete physical situation. They classify objects in a very simple manner
and they accept explanation and reasonings without depth. They best learn by imitating people’s
action to accumulate answers. Asking and experiencing it shall make them adapt.
3. Concrete Operational Stage (Ages 7-11 years old)
The child started storing information by the means of memory and experience. They tend
to think abstractly and logically. They start adapting information not only by observation but by
socialization. Everything they do relies on their personal experience. They best learn by the means
of engagement and exposure not only to kin but to the society.

4. Formal Operations Stage (Ages 11-15 years old)

The child do not need concrete object to learn. They can construct their own way of
thinking how things happened and work. They are fully developed to have moral judgement and
hypothetical reasoning. They best learn by comparing what they know best and what others’
perspective. They are easily influenced by peers and their growing value of being an adolescent.
