I. THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

INTRODUCTION
Pride March or Pride Parades are outdoor events celebrating the self and social acceptance,
achievements, legal rights, and pride of the members of the LGBTQIA group.

This march – even dubbed as “Stonewall Manila” or as “Pride Revolution” according

to various accounts – was held in remembrance of the Stonewall Inn Riots since 1994 marked the
25th year since the “modern” lesbian and gay movement “started”, thanks to the Stonewall Inn Riot
in New York.

On June 26, 1994, ProGayPhilippines (Progressive Organization of Gays in the Philippines),

with the likes of Oscar Atadero and Murphy Red, and backed by Metropolitan Community Church
(MCC) under the leadership of then Pastor Richard Mickley, held a march at the Quezon
City Memorial Circle.

Some actually contest whether this was really a “Pride March”, considering that: 1. it was not
well-documented; and 2. even if a march happened, the issues raised were not only LGBTQIA-
specific.

But – to start – if Pride as it is currently known marks the Stonewall Inn Riots, then this march,
as an endeavor that did that, obviously qualified. Also, even with the reliance on mainstream
media for most of the documentation in those days, the march actually received ample media
attention. Lastly, for the organizers of that first march, the broadened approach actually
“symbolizes not only the solidarity of the LGBTQIA community but also LGBTQIA community
members’ participation in mainstream social and economic issues.” The latter point remains valid now,
particularly with the call to start looking at intersections within the LGBTQIA community, as well as
with other minority sectors.
MANILA SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
The 21st Metro Manila Pride March in 2015, entitled Fight For Love, was held on the 25th of
July. The turnout of the event was an estimated number of 2,000 participants. The following 2016
Metro Manila Pride March was themed Let Love In. Now in 2019, with the theme #ResistTogether,
the Metro Manila Pride March highlights Pride as a protest, rooted in the 1969 Stonewall riots – a
series of demonstrations against a police crackdown on a well-known gay bar in New York City.

According to the event organizer, the 2019 Metro Manila Pride March recorded 70,000
attendees – almost three times the number of participants in 2018.

As members and allies of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, and queer community
gathered at the Marikina Sports Center for Metro Manila Pride March 2019 on Saturday, June 29, two
religious groups shared their views about the community.

A member of Christian group, Jesus is Our Shield, stood outside the venue of the Pride
celebration, seeking to convince members of the LGBTQ+ community to "transform" themselves
and return to God. They held signs with messages of how the "Word of God" could help change their
sexuality. The group also handed out brochures to passersby, reminding them that God hates the sin
but loves the sinner.

The annual PRIDE March’s attendees always consists of the community themselves,
the allies, and the people who are against the community and the parade itself.

Acceptance is what the LGBTQ+ community yearns and continues to strive for but
the countless accounts of abuse, discrimination and homophobia is rampant not only in the Philippines
but also in the entire world.

The researchers would like to explore these causes of abuses, discrimination

and homophobia from those that have attended the Metro Manila PRIDE March 2019 to put shame
to the community only while exploring the awareness of the different individuals that are supportive
of such movement.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Based on the Center for Innovation and Teaching, mixed methods data analysis will involve
analyzing the data from both the qualitative and quantitative approaches used in the study. The
strategy for data analysis and the timing of the analysis may be driven by the overall rationale or
purpose for using mixed methods such as triangulation, complementarity, development, initiation,
and expansion. In this study’s case, the researchers will be using mostly triangulation analysis to be
able to correlate all the answers that will be accumulated.

According to Salkind, the term triangulation refers to the practice of using multiple
sources of data or multiple approaches to analyzing data to enhance the credibility of a
research study. Originating in navigational and surveying contexts, triangulation aligns
multiple perspectives and leads to a more comprehensive understanding of the
phenomenon of interest.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
This study focuses on the Pride March last June 28, 2019 that happened in the Marikina
Sports Complex. The following conceptual framework discusses the independent variables and how
MANILA SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
it is related to the overall topic. This framework discusses ll the different responses the researchers
are going to receive after conducting the survey/interviews.

This conceptual framework shows the relationship of the misconceptions/awareness and the
topic “Pride March 2019”. Based on the given framework, the researchers are planning to acquire all
the data by conducting interviews and surveys on the samples/population and correlate these
responses to be able to finalize and categorize what the misconceptions are nowadays.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Since 1994, the Philippines has held PRIDE Marches that symbolizes the continuous battle the
LGBT community has fought for the rights, the respect and acceptance from society. But it’s not just
in the Philippines, it started as a statement - a stand, in New York City - and now, it’s more than just
that, it’s a voice for the unheard, discriminated, and the misunderstood. PRIDE March is a protest for
freedom, equality and human rights. It is something that is celebrated annually but should be
done everyday.

The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference. And with indifference, stems ignorance,
which makes way for discrimination and everything else that go against the LGBT community.
MANILA SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Indifference can turn into something better and awakening when people keep their minds
open for new understandings and knowledge. Thus, the study focuses on answering the questions of
how aware are the attendees of the 2019 Metro Manila Pride March, whether they’re part of the
community themselves, allies, or those people who have misconceptions of it.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The research Awareness of Selected Students in Manila Science High School Senior High
School regarding the Pride March 2019 in the Marikina Sports Complex focuses on the opinions of
people on their understanding about the pride march in Marikina Sports Complex. This research is for
all people, especially the attendees of the Pride March. This research tends to answer the
question: What is Pride March for pride march attendees and other people who didn't attend the
march?

1.) To know the significance of the Pride March for the people who attended the
Marikina Sport Complex Pride March and the reason for their participation

2.) To inform LGBTQ+ members or the selected students about the opinions and
understandings of other people about the Pride March

3.) To clear the misunderstandings between the Pride March attendees, other LGBTQ+
members and other people in this event

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This study focuses on the awareness and the misconceptions of Gender Attendees in the
Marikina Sports Complex regarding the Pride March. The Pride March that was stated happened on a
Saturday at June 29, 2019, 12:00 PM-11:00PM UTC+08. The data collection will be conducted to
20% of the total population in the attendees of the Pride March 2019. Convenience sampling is
going to be used to filter the samples from the population. This study will not cover other problems
that are not considered as a misconception regarding the Pride March. People who were not able to
attend are not within the scope of this research. This study would be done through the utilization of
a questionnaire. The said questionnaire will include items that will make use of the Likert Scale, and
another part that will consist of open-ended questions. By this strategy, the researchers would be
able to categorize the misconceptions regarding the Pride March 2019.
MANILA SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

DEFINITION OF KEY TERMS

LGBTQ+ - or Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer +, is a group or community where the
members have different sexualities aside from their sex or their gender. Lesbian and gay
are homosexual or have love and/or attraction towards the same sex. Unlike lesbian and gay, bisexual
have love and/or attraction in either of the two genders: male and female. Transgenders are people
who go through the transition of being uncomfortable in the sex they were born in and
thus, though not all, go through surgery with their genital parts or reproductive organs, and
drink hormonal pills to maintain this, and get comfortable in their own skin and own gender. Queer
are people that are in the process of determining their sexuality.

Likert Scale - Likert (1932) developed the principle of measuring attitudes by asking people to
respond to a series of statements about a topic, in terms of the extent to which they agree with them,
and so tapping into the cognitive and affective components of attitudes. Likert-type scale assumes
that the strength/intensity of experience is linear, i.e. on a continuum from strongly agree to strongly
disagree, and makes the assumption that attitudes can be measured. Respondents may
be offered a choice of five to seven or even nine pre-coded responses with the neutral point being
neither agree nor disagree.

Mixed Method Research - refers to an emergent methodology of research that advances the
systematic integration, or “mixing,” of quantitative and qualitative data within a single investigation
or sustained program of inquiry. The basic premise of this methodology is that such integration
permits a more complete and synergistic utilization of data than do separate quantitative
and qualitative data collection and analysis. Mixed methods research originated in the social sciences

and has recently expanded into the health and medical sciences, including fields such as nursing,
family medicine, social work, mental health, pharmacy, allied health, and others.

Pride March - or Pride Parade, is an outdoor event for LGBT+ members celebrating their self or
social acceptance, achievements, legal rights and pride. This was originated from Stonewall Riot on
June 28,1969 on the front of the Stonewall Inn.
MANILA SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Stonewall Riot - or also known as Stonewall uprising, is a series of violent confrontations that
began in the early hours of June 28, 1969 between the police and gay rights activists. It was done
outside the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City. It was a galvanizing force for
LGBT
political activism, leading to numerous gay rights organizations, including the Gay Liberation
Front, Human Rights Campaign, GLAAD (formerly Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against
Defamation), and PFLAG(formerly Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays).

II. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

IIa. Foreign
This year’s Pride celebrations mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, often
considered the birth of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. The first Pride parade was held one
year after Stonewall, meaning that although we’re celebrating the 50th anniversary of Stonewall this
year, this will be the 49th annual Pride parade.

That first Pride parade was held on June 28, 1970. Known then as the Christopher Street
Liberation Day March — named after the street on which Stonewall is located — the parade began
on Washington Place between Sheridan Square and Sixth Avenue and moved up Sixth Avenue,
ending with a “Gay-In” in Central Park.

The idea that LGBTQ+ people would march through the streets of New York City, proudly
declaring their existence, their pride and their love was truly revolutionary back then. "It took a new
sense of audacity and courage to take that giant step into the streets of Midtown Manhattan," as Fred
Sargeant, one of the organizers of the first march recalled in a 2010 essay for the Village Voice.

Every year after, more and more cities joined. As time went by, the Advocate notes, the parade
became more celebratory, incorporating floats and music. In 1974, Los Angeles became the first to
add a festival component. The Pride flag, designed by Gilbert Baker, first flew in San
Francisco in 1978. This year, organizers anticipate that over 3 million people will attend World Pride
events in New York — an exponentially larger number than those first 5,000 marchers. But
although the look and the scale of the Pride parade has changed, its goal remains the same: to
MANILA SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. As one anonymous writer recalled, "we owned the streets. We
felt liberated and free.”

IIb. Local
Schools should be safe places for everyone. But in the Philippines, students who are
lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) too often find that their schooling experience is
marred by bullying, discrimination, lack of access to LGBT-related information, and in some cases,
physical or sexual assault. These abuses can cause deep and lasting harm and curtail students’ right
to education, protected under Philippine and international law.

In recent years, lawmakers and school administrators in the Philippines have recognized
that bullying of LGBT youth is a serious problem, and designed interventions to address it. In 2012,
the Department of Education (DepEd), which oversees primary and secondary schools, enacted a
Child Protection Policy designed to address bullying and discrimination in schools, including on the
basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. The following year, Congress passed the
Anti-Bullying Law of 2013, with implementing rules and regulations that enumerate sexual
orientation and gender identity as prohibited grounds for bullying and harassment. The adoption of
these policies sends a strong signal that bullying and discrimination are unacceptable and should not
be tolerated in educational institutions.

The Philippines has one of the worst records of violence against the trans community. The
murders of 29 transgender people have been documented in the Philippines since 2008, according to
the TvT project, which monitors and analyzes cases of transphobia worldwide. This is the highest
number in the Southeast Asian region, and the second highest in Asia — though activists say that
many murders of trans people go unreported in the country, so the number is likely much higher.

The trans community is not the only LGBT group that has experienced violence in
the Philippines. There were at least “28 LGBT-related killings” in the country in the first half of 2011
alone, according to a 2014 UNDP/USAID report. These troubling statistics offer a glimpse into the
marginalization and abuse that the LGBT community faces in the predominantly-Catholic
archipelago.
MANILA SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

On the surface, the Philippines may appear to be one of the more “liberal” ASEAN countries
when it comes to the LGBT community.
Homosexuality is not criminalized, and a handful of anti-discrimination ordinances (both those
specifically protecting LGBT persons and more broadly-worded decrees) have been passed in some
cities, including Quezon City, Cebu City and Davao City, in recent years. In another win, in 2009 the
Philippines lifted a ban that had prevented openly gay and bisexual men and women from serving in
the military.

In a 2013 Pew Research Center report about global opinions of the LGBT community, more
than 70 percent of Filipinos said homosexuality should be “accepted by society,” making the
Philippines the most “tolerant” nation surveyed in the Asia-Pacific region after Australia.
However, although “there is high tolerance here, there’s not real acceptance,” Ging Cristobal, a
Manila-based activist with the International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission, tells The
Huffington Post.

Legal recognition and protection of LGBT people at the national level largely remains absent.

Agreement was “moderately weak” among women with live-in partners (31 percent agree,
58 percent disagree); men with live-in partners (33 percent agree, 58 percent disagree), and single
men who had never married (28 percent agree, 46 percent disagree).

In a 2013 survey by the US-based Pew Research Center, the Philippines ranked 10th among
the 17 countries in the world with a high level of public acceptance of homosexuals.

Thirty-nine countries were covered by the survey titled “The Global Divide on
Homosexuality” conducted by Pew Research from March 10, 2013 to April 3, 2013.

Despite their religiosity, 73 percent of adult Filipinos agreed with the statement that
“homosexuality should be accepted by society,” in face-to-face interviews conducted in Tagalog,
Cebuano, Ilonggo, Ilocano and Bicolano.
MANILA SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

This year's theme for the Pride March was fitting for all the struggles the community has
experienced, “Resist Together”, called on advocates to fight discrimination against the members of
the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community.

Advocates and supporters pushed for the SOGIEE Bill (Sexual Orientation and Gender
Identity and Expression Equality Bill) and raised concerns on different issues affecting the country.

III. METHODS, PROCEDURES, AND SOURCES OF DATA

RESEARCH DESIGN
Mixed Methods Research, as defined by Shorten (2017), is a type of research approach
wherein the researchers gather, analyze, and interpret data in both qualitative and quantitative
forms. This approach was used in this study so that the researchers would be able to obtain a more
accurate and sufficient data that would therefore provide a much more thorough and detailed
information regarding the topic being studied. The researchers utilized the Sequential Explanatory
Design under Mixed Methods which is characterized by first conducting a quantitative analysis and is
then followed by the qualitative analysis derived from the quantitative data. (Shorten, 2017).

Phase I - Quantitative Strand

The researchers used Survey Research under Quantitative Design to gain statistical data.
According to Rouse(2017), that survey research is a method of gathering data which may
be attained through approaching individuals to answer a series of questions in the form of an interview
or questionnaire that may appear as multiple choice questionnaires, opinions, or polls. The survey will
be based on Likert Scale. Defined by surveymonkey.com(2016), Likert Scale was invented by Likert.
He developed the principle of measuring attitudes by asking people to respond to a series of
statements about a topic, in terms of the extent to which they agree with them, and so tapping into
the cognitive and affective components of attitudes.
Using this Survey Research, the researchers will be able to get data about their opinion
about the march. After the collection of data, the researchers will be able to tabulate and moving on
to the next phase.
MANILA SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Phase II - Qualitative Strand:

For the Qualitative strand, the researchers conducted a one on one interview. According to
Hire Resolve, the One to One interview is the most common interview where only the interviewer and
the interviewee is present. The format of the interview is conversational with the interviewer driving
the agenda in the beginning and the interviewee asking questions towards the end.

Probing will also be present during the interview to be able to acquire more information
which may open more topics regarding the question. The interview will be recorded and
later transcribed. Data gathered would be interpreted and further analyzed.

LOCALE OF THE STUDY

Interview and surveying were conducted for the research. Permission to conduct research was
first submitted to the office of the principal at Manila Science High School. Surveys were
conducted randomly and anonymously at the school. Additionally, interviews were conducted in the
participants’ suggested medium where they would be the most comfortable. Creating a comfortable
environment for the participant before and during data collection is recommended to reduce the
participant’s anxiety during an interview or survey (Rimando et al., 2015).

SAMPLE COLLECTION
The researchers used the random sampling for the sampling method. The random sampling
every individual observation has equal probability of being selected into the sample (Elfil, 2017). The
researchers gathered 20% of the senior high school students in Manila Science High School.

DATA GATHERING INSTRUMENT

Survey forms were used in gathering data for the study. Each age group had a unique
survey form based on a Likert scale. According to Nemoto and Beglar (2013), Likert scale measures
human attitude in a scientific manner. The scale is used in psychometrics, social science, &
educational research. Moreover, Likert scale helps in addressing the issue of quantifying subjective
preferential thinking in a validated manner. Therefore, the researchers used Likert scale to quantify
the participants’ awareness on the research topic. The researchers will also use Google Forms, for
them to be able to collect data easily because all Manila Science High School students have access in
social media.
MANILA SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

According to Matthew Guay, Google Forms is part of Google's online apps suite of tools to
help you get more done in your browser for free. It's easy to use and one of the simplest ways to
save data directly to a spreadsheet, and it's the best sidekick to Google Sheets' spreadsheets. In other
words, giving survey using Google Forms will provide a spreadsheet containing the answers from the
survey unlike the manual survey where the researchers give individual survey to each participant
and encode the data one by one.

VALIDATION OF THE INSTRUMENT

The survey and questionnaire were both assessed by the researcher’s adviser e in order to
decide if its substance were precise, applicable, and in accordance with the theme being
considered. As referenced by the National Business Research Foundation (2019), the legitimacy of a
questionnaire can be investigated by alluding to the various sorts of legitimacy. Also, likert scale was
consolidated into the overview poll since the said kind of organized scale is ordinarily used to measure
conclusions and convictions with respect to a specific concern (Gee, 2017). All things
considered, McLeod (2019) brought up that the legitimacy of a likert scale might be an issue due to
the plausibility of members to change reality in their answers, which is the reason construct
legitimacy is regularly applied in likert scales with the goal that the specialists may check if the
likert scale questionnaire corresponds with other comparative likert scale surveys (Kaliris, 2015).

METHOD OF COLLECTING DATA

The researchers will use convenience sampling where the researchers will give a 20-item
survey to the Manila Science High School which is the researchers’ school. Convenience Sampling is
defined as one of the main types of non-probability sampling methods. It is made up of people who
are easy to reach. Considering that the researchers studies at Manila Science High School, it is the
most convenient way to find participants and avoid going outside the campus.

The survey is in Likert Scale format. Likert Scale was invented by Likert. He developed the
principle of measuring attitudes by asking people to respond to a series of statements about a
topic, in terms of the extent to which they agree with them, and so tapping into the cognitive and
affective components of attitudes. The survey has two topics: Knowledge, to know if the participant
have sufficient knowledge regarding about the Pride March 2019 event in the Marikina Sport
Complex; Perspective, the know their opinion and perspective regarding about the Pride March
MANILA SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
2019 event. Each topic has 10 statement that will be rated in total of 20 statements. The data
collected will be tallied using IBM SPSS Statistics 23. The statistical test that will be used is T-Test.
After answering the survey, the participant will undergo interviewing in which they are given an open
ended question for their opinion regarding the Pride March 2019 event.

SOURCES OF DATA
All the data collected by the researchers using the survey will be the primary data. Insights or
any internet sources that is used for reference and basis will be the secondary data.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA

The researchers will use the statistical analysis that will be appropriate for tallying
the spreadsheet from the Google Forms. The researchers will use the application IBM SPSS Statistics
23 for efficient use of statistical test.

IV. SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

SUMMARY OF METHODS AND PROCEDURES

Considering that this research study makes use of the Mixed Method approach, the study
underwent two parts, Quantitative and Qualitative. For the Quantitative approach, the researchers
made use of the Likert Scale through a survey which was answered by 30 participants.
Data acquired from the survey were tabulated and analyzed. Following the Quantitative approach is
the Qualitative approach, one on one interviews were conducted with the appropriate informed
consent that would ensure confidentiality for the interviewees. Data gathered from the
interviews were transcribed and interpreted.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

It may be inferred from the data gathered that the respondents are knowledgeable
regarding the Pride March 2019 and the LGBT Community as a whole. After the survey, it was
observed that respondents of the female sex are more aware and supportive of the community and
the event. While on the interview, it was further discussed how people support the cause of the said
event and how it is crucial especially to the LGBT community.

CONCLUSION

The researchers concluded that Senior High School students are mostly aware of the Pride
March 2019 and the LGBT Community. It can be concluded that factors may affect the knowledge
and awareness of people, like the location, considering the very small scope, there wasn’t
a significant difference among the answers of the respondents, meaning they have answered almost
MANILA SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
similar answers. With all the data, it can also be concluded that MSHS SHS students mostly support
the cause of the event and are most likely knowledgeable of the purpose of the said event, the Pride
March 2019.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the results of the data acquired, the researchers recommend future researchers to
not use convenience sampling because this will lessen the variance of the sample size. Additionally,
a larger sample size would be better and would yield better results since different perspectives from
different environments would be taken for the data. The researchers would also recommend to
widen the scope for the respondents, since it is more preferable to have various beliefs and views, to
understand every part of the story. Lastly, focus group discussions can also be an option
especially if there is an adequate amount of people that attended the Pride March, to have a much
more fruitful and immersive conversation.
