Given the lack of resources in our rural areas in the Philippines, what media can still be used for
effective learning in schools?

 Technology nowadays is in demand in schools, most of the teachers are now

using technologies as their partner in teaching and also for the students as partner in
their learning. Technologies lessen the work of the teachers but how about those rural
areas? Until now, there are some provinces especially the rural areas lack of resources.
As we all know, using technologies nowadays are very effective for the students
learning. However, this is not a hindrance for the teacher and the students in their
learning because even if there are no technologies involved in a classroom setting still
students can learn through the use of traditional instructional materials such as the
cartolina, manila papers or even textbooks, they can also have the newspapers, articles,
journals or even dictionaries. Using technologies are much easier and convenient but for
those who belong in the rural areas they can rely on textbooks, articles or news paper
and for the teacher to be effective in his/her teaching he/she can use the cartolina or
manila paper or anything to introduce his/her topic since it’s aim is to teach the
students and to promote learning. Because as what in Educational Technology 1 said
that teachers should not only depend on technologies he/she should put in mind that
the technology is only a partner of his/her teaching.

Moreover, we can use other visual aids like posters, charts, illustrations,
pictures and drawings as a substitute for the lack of resources. The print media like
newspaper and magazines because they do not need the use of electricity. You can even
let the students go out of the classroom and go to the actual object. For example, if you
are a Science teacher, you are discussing about the parts of the plants. You can go to the
garden of the school and discuss there. Or if you are conducting an experiment about
the heat of the sun. You let one student stand outside and examine her temperature
after 5 minutes. Or even if your topic is all about the parts of the flower, you can
conduct your class outside front of a flower for the students to learn more because of
the actual example. Also, field trips is more effective in learning than watching videos
only. Aside from witnessing the actual world of your topic , they are enjoying it at the
same time. They let your students experience everything.

Actually, chalkboard is belong in traditional media which is very common in
every learning center up until now. As a teacher , we must be innovative and creative
enough in making and choosing a kind of traditional media depending on it’s
availability, especially if you are assigned in areas that are not equipped with mediated
technologies. What matters most is that you have selected and used a traditional media
that would be very helpful in maximizing learning, encouraging students’ participation
for effective learning. It’s just a matter of how the teacher uses the strategies and
techniques in teaching.

2. The Integration of social media in education – Facebook.

 Social network sites, also referred to as social media sites, such as facebook attract
young people today. Because of the familiarity with secondary students, ease of use and
ease of access, social network sites could be incorporated seamlessly into the online
learning environment (OLE). By doing so, they would extend learning to a dynamic ,
changing, and shared experience beyond the boundaries of the classroom. The would
actively engage students, as many already monitor their own online presence for new
activity or comments often.
An advantage of social network sites as a research-based pedagogical technique
is that teachers can easily incorporate and share multimedia through them, thereby
providing a rich content experience that accommodate learning styles and
preferences. This also provide a collaborative learning environment that is not bound by
time constrictions, allow for informal learning opportunities to increase , and support
active knowledge construction through interaction with experts as well as peers. By
incorporating social network sites, teachers cannot only capitalize on skills that students
already use outside of the school atmosphere, but also on their interest and habits. This
is used for sharing resources and the results showed that students learned from one
another; students engaged with experts from the professional community; student
thinking and learning was extended beyond class time; communication between
students and professionals was facilitated; and a learning community was built.

Using facebook, it opens the possibility for teachers to create groups for
educational purposes. In order to discuss themes related to classroom practices with
their students. According to Bowman and Akcaoglu, the connection between teachers
and students provided by Facebook can potentially be an addition to learning
environments were students engagement is limited by the lack of communication
between teachers and students. By using Facebook groups, teachers and students have
the opportunity to become partners in learning, not only for a given moment, but also
for longer times, having the possibility of creating a sustained community of learners,
that is, a community in which the participants use such tools regularly and
autonomously. In addition, that sustained process enables the integration of digital
technology in a meaningful and intentional way at schools, resulting in a potential
effective addition to learning.(https://www.tandfonline.com)
A facebook group also creates a space for students to ask and answer questions.
Ofcourse, facebook is known as a place to post status updates, announcements, photos
and video – all things that we likely use in our classes anyway.Students can post
assignments, make announcements and remind students about important deadlines.
Parents can also access the site to monitor what is going on in your class.
(www.edudemic.com) Using facebook to supplement classroom instruction seems to be
aligned with the current trend. Additionally, as a result of globalization of digital media,
English is now the predominant language of online communication among youngsters
although it is not their native language. (https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org) We should
keep in mind that facebook can be addicted for many users. Using facebook of your
need is good, but spending your valuable time in Facebook is harmful. We can overcome
with some knowledge about it and a little bit of self-discipline.

3. How important is ET2 in your – work (office & net cafes)?

 Today ,more than ever, the role of educational technology in teaching Is of

great importance because of the use of information and communication technologies.
With the help of various application for distance education, the internet, teachers, and
students themselves, they see the advantage of educational technology.

4. Draw a computer room conducive to twenty-five (25) students/clients/customers and explain

each components.
 Door- a very important for each and every home or other buildings. It enables us to
enter the room without breaking through the wall. A door enables us to close that
doorway for privacy, environmental or security reasons.

Entrance Counter- it is very important to have someone who monitored everyone who
goes in and out of the computer room. The assigned personnel will let all the users to fill
in the log book with their signature and time.

Bulletin Board- it is being used inside the computer room for the rules and regulations
inside being posted. Or even any announcement.

CCTV- though not all computer room have it, this thing is necessary for safety and for
monitoring the activities done inside the computer room.

Light Bulb- being used for giving light all around the room.

Airconditioner- circulates and filter air, removing pollutants and mold from the air.
Maintains the cold temperature inside the computer room.
Comfort Room- is the most important as a part of the computer room. In the first place
the comfort room should be in good condition and enough water. Good for everyone to
use it anytime.

Projector- it is important to use especially if the teacher has a presentation for the
whole class inside the computer room. Easy to use and easy to watch.

Chairs- a very important component inside the computer room. Used by students where
they seat and relaxed while using the computer.

Computers- is the main reason why everyone goes to the computer room. It is being
used for making projects, assignments or even group activity. Also, if you have
something to research about the topic your teacher gave you.

5. What are the character traits as a teacher/ICT Coordinator if your area of assignment do not
have any students/learners even if there are computer units and computer room?

 We believe that character traits are a combination of characteristics that are innate to
us as individuals as well as characteristics that develop out of specific life experiences.
As a teacher, we have a huge responsibility towards each child entrusted to us. It is our
duty to try our best to meet the needs of the students in our classroom and to help
them become productive members of our communities.
(https://www.teachthought.com ) (https://www.thoughtco.com) But what if our
responsibility which is the students is not there at all? What if they never existed? All
the things around us seems so useless if students are nowhere to be found. Even the
school cafeteria or the computer room will be so empty due to the absence of the
students. Things which is made for the students is worthless. Just like computers.
A computer is a programmable machine that is both electronic and digital. The
actual machinery is hardware; the instruction and data is software. In the current world,
it’s almost impossible to imagine that someone can live without computer. They have
become an electronic device of almost everyday use for individuals of every age, and
essential in almost all the business dealings that are made nowadays.
(https://www.webopedia.com) I’ll be feeling bad and calm as well if computer is not
being used by the students. Computer will not function on its own if no one will control
it or use it. Computers would be useless in school if there is no students benefited with
the use of computer. With my adaptability, I am able to handle a sudden change to my
area of assignment without making it a distraction. Ofcourse, with my creativeness, I will
think outside the box to solve a problem.
Students take an active role in their learning by recognizing they are
accountable for their academic success. Students can play an important role In
improving and strengthening the society. But without them, the school and it’s
resources is just a plain material being displayed on one corner.
Using computer effectively is much more than simply being able to type an
essay or produce a graph. But, it’s just a useless thing if it is not being used and occupied
by the students. I felt ashamed for the school for receiving such budget for the school
but it is not properly given to those who really need it. For me, it is very selfish to act
that way. Only the teachers enjoyed the benefits of the school. Budget are given for the
school so that it is convenient for all the students to use it. But its more shocking if a
school has everything including computers but lack of students. It Is sad to think, but
sometimes, the school who has lots of computer do not let the students use the
computer. For example, when I was in high school, I never stepped inside our computer
room and I usually just watch on the window if how’s it look inside. Everything was
dusty and full of cab webs. I don’t really understand why they prevent student to use
the computer room but as I conclude, the only important for them is their own self.
What’s the use of computer rooms if there is no students going inside and using
it. But, as a teacher I will do my best to change everything, maybe not in a hurry but
little by little my determination will soar high and being passionate about something is
achieving.
