STEP Standard 5 - Implementation of Instructional Unit

Implement the unit you have designed. You have already implemented and analyzed the pre-
assessment. In this topic, you will implement all lesson activities, correlating formative assessments and
the summative post-assessment. Choose one of the lesson activities to video record a 5-10 minute
segment, review, and reflect on your teaching. Have your cooperating teacher/mentor review the
recording and provide feedback, if possible.

Summary of Unit Implementation:

Lesson 1- this lesson didn’t go exactly as planned. The students had a difficult time understanding verbs
with inflectional s. They understood nouns with inflectional s much better. They were able to identify
the nouns ending with s after the lesson. They also understood that sometimes nouns with s end with
the “zzz” sound as opposed to the “sss” sound.

Lesson 2- This lesson and activity was very successful. First graders have a hard time reading and
speaking with l blends. Practicing the blends and thinking of different words helped. The “Write the
Room” activity was fun and engaging for the students. They really enjoyed walking around the room
and trying to determine where their word on the card was supposed to go. Most of the students
correctly placed their cards but some didn’t. Afterwards, I had a couple students fix the misplaced cards
on the posters.

Lesson 3 and 4 were quite successful. The students loved the stories. They loved the “memory” game
and using the whisper phones. They were able to identify the l blend words and high frequency words
with high accuracy. They also loved answering clarifying questions about the stories.

Lesson 5 – they really enjoyed playing “hangman” with the pumpkin drawing. They were engaged
during the review and the assessment was successful for the most part.

Summary of Student Learning:

My initial perception of student learning was that most students understood the concepts being taught
but there were about 4 students who understood only a little bit.

I was surprised how well most of them caught onto the concept of L blends. They had a hard time
thinking of L blend words but they didn’t have trouble placing them on the posters. I was not surprised
that they weren’t understanding inflectional s especially the verbs. Most of them could read the high
frequency words by sight at the end of the unit but some of them still couldn’t read 4 letter l blend
words.

We have one little boy in the class who becomes very disruptive and out of control several times
throughout the day. There are times when I have to give him an independent activity during whole class
activity time. If we don’t, he often ends up hurting other students or losing bodily control all together.
During the “write the room” activity, I gave him a box of discovery science toys that he could play with.
This seemed to work well. When he became too disruptive during the other activities, I ended up giving
him the tablet so he could play on the “Starfall” website. This helped him stay calm and learn in a less
stimulating way. Looking back I should have had better modified activities for him pertaining to the
lesson. He is extremely defiant and stubborn, a real challenge for us.

Reflection of Video Recording:

I was surprised how smoothly the lesson went. I need to be more consistent about raising hands and
letting the kids know when the whole class is supposed to answer. I also need to let the students finish
before I talk and I need to stop searching for the perfect answer. Other than that, I thought the reading
went pretty smooth considering I was interrupted a couple times by the office phone ringing us and kids
coming back into the class from an eye screening at the nurse. I have another 10 minute video that was
not uploaded and some of these observations come from that as well.
