The sun is the primary source of energy for the earth system (atmosphere,
hydrosphere, biosphere, cryosphere, and lithosphere).
The earth systems are constantly exchanging matter and energy through
physical and bio-geochemical cycles. The physical cycles, including
atmospheric and oceanic motion, are driven by solar energy which is why we
need to understand the distribution of solar energy around the globe.
Energy transfer from the sun to the earth is nearly all by radiation (some
negligible mass is associated with the solar wind). Figure 1.1 shows the
latitudinal distribution of incoming solar radiation and its effect on energy
density received at the surface. The maximum at the equator and minimum
at the poles occur because of the solar beam spreading over a greater area at
higher latitudes and attenuation, or beam depletion, by the atmosphere.

Air Pressure
“Top”
On average, air weighs
about 14.7 lb/in2
1”
1” Air Pressure varies over
the globe
air pressure as the force exerted by the air molecules over a given area.

Air “converges” at lows, and rises.
Air “diverges” at highs, and sinks.

• Rising air cools; water vapor in the air
condenses to form clouds/precipitation
• Lows tend to bring cloudy, wet weather

besarnya.
10
21
Wind ; Air in motion relative to the surface of the earth (AMS)
22
11
23
The pressure gradient force is the force that causes the wind
to blow.
24
12
25
26
The Coriolis force causes the wind to deflect to the right of its
intended path in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left of its intended
path in the Southern Hemisphere.
13
27
Gaya Coriolis : Gaya pembelokan arah angin terhadap arah
gradien tekanan udaranya, yang ditimbulkan oleh perputaran
bumi atas sumbunya.
C = 2 w v sin ø
•Makin tinggi lintang dimana angin yang bersangkutan bertiup, maka
makin besarlah nilai gaya Coriolis.
bersangkutan ( = R )
S = v2/R
15
31
A wind that blows at a constant speed parallel to curved isobars above the
level of frictional influence is termed a gradient wind.
32
16
33
Hukum I Buys Ballot : Di BBU arah angin menyimpang ke kanan,
arah gaya gradien tekanan udaranya.

(1) Trade winds (angin passat) : bertiup 30° LU - equator, & equator - 30° LS.
(2) Westerlies, (winds from the west) : bertiup 30° - 60° LU dan 30° - 60° LS.
(3) Polar winds (angin kutub) : 60° LU – Kutub & 60° Ls- Kutub

• The nighttime mountain breeze is sometimes called
gravity winds or drainage winds, because gravity
causes the cold air to ‘drain’ downhill.
