_____________________________________________________________________
Notes : 1. Answer two questions from Section A and two questions from section B.
2. Due credit will be given to neatness and adequate dimensions.
3. Assume suitable data wherever necessary.
4. Illustrate your answers wherever necessary with the help of neat sketches.
SECTION – A
1. a) Draw and explain what is overload in case of BJT? How protection is achieved? Also 7
elaborate turn on and turn off characteristics.
b) What are the main differences between MOSFET and BJT? Draw transfer characteristics 10
and switching waveforms of MOSFET.
2. a) Explain the operation of three phase full wave fully controlled controller. Draw output 12
voltage, load current and current through thyristors assuming highly inductive load.
Compare conduction period of each device, number of devices conducting at a time with
three pulse converter with similar load.
b) A three phase, six pulse fully controlled converter is connected to 3  AC supply of 400V, 6
50 Hz and the firing angle is 45º. If the load current is at 10A and load voltage is 360 V,
determine.
a) Load resistance, R L b) Source inductance, LS and
c) Overlap angle .
3. a) With neat circuit diagram explain three phase cycloconverter fed with single phase input 7
supply.
b) Explain how four quadrant operation is achieved assuming dc motor with back emf of 10
50V is connected. What is the role of inductor in such type of converter circuit. State any
one practical application. Elaborate you answer with neat sketches and equations. Also
derive the relation between 1 and 2 where 1 & 2 are firing angles.
SECTION – B
4. a) What are different voltage control methods available for inverters? Explain any one 10
method in detail. What is over modulation and how it is avoided in UPS?
b) The single phase full bridge inverter has resistive load of 2.4  and dc input voltage of 8
VS  48 V. Determine
i) RMS output voltage at fundamental frequency.
ii) The output power.
iii) The average current through each thyristor.
iv) The peak current through each thyristor.
5. a) Explain the working of boost converter in CCM & DCM of operation with the help of 9
neat sketches.
b) Compare hard switched and soft switched converters. 8
6. a) Explain the operation of SVC with the help of suitable neat sketches. 8
b) Draw and explain the working principle of each block of Uninterruptible power supplies. 9
