PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS • Program must be selected from the standard classical guitar repertoire.
• Pre-college winners must participate in recital.
• College/professional finals open to public.
• Judge’s decision final in all matters.
Biographies
Kevin Dollar, Master Teacher and Director of Community Outreach, specializes in classical, folk, and rock guitar and performs extensively in and around the
area. Kevin earned his Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees in Guitar Performance at UNCG. He has taught at the Academy since 1995. He
received the 1998 MANC Board Service Award, the 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 MANC Faculty Merit and Service Awards, a 2002 Teaching Excellence Award,
and the 2003 Pamela A. Allen Achievement Award. Kevin is on the faculty at Elon University and has performed concerts for Piedmont Artists Guild,
Greensboro Symphony, Greensboro Opera Company, Greensboro Community Theater, and Bel Canto.
Elliot Frank, applauded by critics and audiences for his unique blend of powerful virtuosity, beautiful tone, and natural musicianship, Elliot Frank has
appeared as solo recitalist, chamber player, and as concerto soloist throughout the Americas and Europe. He is a prize-winner in two international competitions,
and has appeared as featured soloist with the North Carolina Symphony. He has appeared in solo recitals for the Memphis Classical Guitar Society, the Dallas
Guitar Society, the Piedmont Guitar Society, the Richmond Classic Guitar Society, Guitar Houston. and the Museum of Colonial Art in Caracas. An aficionado
of guitar music of Hispanic cultures, he has performed lecture/recitals pertaining to the music of Antonio Lauro for the Guitar Foundation of America at
international festivals in Pasadena and New Orleans. He has also performed for the Tallahassee Guitar Society, the Tampa Classical Guitar Festival, the North
Carolina Bach Festival, the Appalachian Guitar Fest, Columbus State University Guitar Symposium, and the East Carolina University Summer Guitar Festival,
where he also serves as Artistic Director. Recent appearances include performances for the Alexandria Guitar Festival, Piccolo Spoleto, the Appalachian Guitar
Fest, his Canadian debut at the Festival Lachine in Montreal, Canada, at the 2003 Southwest Guitar Festival in San Antonio where he appeared along with David
Russell, the Assad Duo, and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, and in the Dominican Republic. ACA Digital Recordings has just released his first compact disc,
South American Guitar Music, which has been praised as being “eloquent” and “delightful.” Upcoming performances include the 2006 Guitar Foundation of
America Festival in Columbus, Georgia. Elliot Frank was selected to initiate the guitar studies program for East Carolina University and is currently teaching
there in addition to maintaining an active concert schedule. His students have earned awards on state, regional, national and international levels, including
national first prize of the Music Teacher’s National Association Wurlitzer Young Artist Competition.
Douglas James has appeared as a classical guitarist throughout the United States, Europe and Mexico. He has been a featured recitalist at such notable venues
as Italy’s L’Estate Chitarristica sul Lago Maggiore, the Great Lakes Classical Guitar Festival at Oberlin Conservatory, Charleston’s Piccolo Spoleto festival, and
New York’s Carnegie and Merkin Halls. In 1995, he was awarded his second National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Fellowship in recognition for his
work in 19th century historical performance. In 1992, he was the top prize winner in the Arturo Toscanini Solo Guitar Competition (Italy), and received touring
grants from Arts International and the Arizona Commission for the Arts. Dr. James has served as an Artist in Residence in North Carolina and as a touring artist
for the Southern Arts Federation, the Texas Commission for the Arts and the Arizona Commission on the Arts. As a radio recitalist, he has been heard on
National Public Radio’s Performance Today, as well as special broadcasts on the major classical stations of Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, as well as
Oslo, Norway.
Mark Mazzatenta is among the cherished few musicians to excel in both the jazz and classical worlds as performer and composer. He earned his M.M. at
Florida State University in 1987 and began teaching at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he heads the guitar program and teaches Jazz
Appreciation. Mr. Mazzatenta’s concerts feature contemporary and original music—everything from solo classical guitar pieces to improvisatory electric guitar
synthesizer. He also performs in a duo with twin brother Michael on piano/harpsichord/keys. Mark’s favorite musicians include John Williams, the Assad Duo,
Pat Metheny, Allan Holdsworth, and Paul Winter. Mark has played in workshops with Teri Lyne Carrington, Fred Wesley and Byron Stripling and performed as a
guest musician with Chris and Dan Brubeck. His latest article, “Expanding Your Horizons with Horizontal Scales,” can be found in the Winter/Spring 2001 issue
of Soundboard magazine.
