Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

1.1 Introduction

E-learning is one of the most powerful tools available to the growing need of
education. E-learning system like those offered at future school offer advantages over
traditional schooling method in many circumstances. These benefits given students,
parents, and teachers an edge in a world that often is too fast raced or not sensitive to
individual student’s need. The main purpose of those systems is to provide a better and
effective way to help students to get learning materials and information.

According to Abbad, et. al (2009) E-learning refers to the use of information and
communication technologies to enable the access to online learning /teaching resources.
5555itIn its broadest sense defined ELearning to mean any learning that is enabled
electronically. They however narrowed this definition down to mean learning that is
empowered by the use of digital technologies. This definition is further narrowed by
some researchers as any learning that is internet-enabled or web-based (LaRose et al,
1998; Keller and Cernerud, 2002).

According to Anand et al 2012 E-learning applications/processes include


computer based, web based, and technology based learning, in addition to virtual
education opportunities. Content delivery is through internet/intranet/extranet and audio
or video tape, Satellite TV, and CO-ROM including media as text, image, animation and
audio streaming and the outputs of technology based education. This is the product of
researchers and practitioners developed a wide range of knowledge related to electronic
learning or e-learning.

According to Richard and Haya 2009 the Internet has become one of the vital
ways to make available resources for research and learning for both teachers and
students to share and acquire information. Technology-based e-learning encompasses
the use of the internet and other important technologies to produce materials for
learning, teach learners, and also regulate courses in an organization (Fry, 2001). There
has been extensive debate about a common definition of the term e-learning.

Existing definitions according to Dublin (2003) tend to reveal the specialization


and interest of the researchers. E-learning as a concept covers a range of applications,
learning methods and processes (Rossi, 2009). It is therefore difficult to find a commonly
accepted definition for the term e-learning, and according to Oblinger and Hawkins
(2005) and Dublin (2003), there is even no common definition for the term. Holmes and
Gardner (2006) also made a comment on these inconsistencies by saying that there
may be as many definitions of the term e-learning as there are academic papers on the
subject.

1.2 Background of the Study

Due to the rapid growth of internet technology, Universities around the world are
investing heavily in e-learning systems to support their traditional teaching and to
improve their student’s learning experience and performance. However, the success of
an e-learning system depends on the understanding of certain antecedent factors that
influence the student’s acceptance and usage of such e-learning systems. This study
aims to provide a discussion of the current e-leaning environments including their
(characteristics) advantages and major factors that affect the acceptance of such
technologies. It is concluded that a successful e-learning system should consider the
personal, social, cultural, technological, organizational, and environmental factors.

This study briefly describes the coverage idea of the advantages of using those
system (e-learning) for DCSA Valenzuela that provides personal computer and mobile
peripherals by using major equipment of the school to help students and instructors for
advanced learning through the electronics. It helps us to produce the learning method of
the new innovative classroom, this is the evidence why e learning created for example;
new ways how we teach and learn, proper tools and materials

According to Tao et al (2006), this new environment for learning that is centered
on electronic networks has allowed learners in universities to receive individualized
support and also to have learning schedules that is more suitable to them as well as
separate from other learners. This facilitates a high interaction and collaboration level
between instructors or teachers and peers than traditional environment for learning. E-
learning in academics which is characterized by the use of multimedia constructs made
the process of learning more active, interesting and enjoyable. The main constructs that

have made e-learning the most promising educational technology according to Hammer
and Champy (2001) and Liaw et al (2007) include service, cost, quality, and speed. It is
apparent that e-learning can empower students at higher educational levels to acquire
their education in while at the same time per using their personal objectives as well as
maintaining their own careers, with no need to attend be subjected to rigid schedule
(Borstorff and Lowe. 2007).According to Kartha (2006) in support of this thought
reported that the number of courses online has vividly increased as a result of the
attained benefits for both learners and universities.

1.3 Statement of the problem

This study seeks to answer how the advantage of e-learning system affects the
students of Datamex College of Saint Adeline Valenzuela Branch.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

 To find out the significance of using e-learning system among students of


Datamex College of Adeline Valenzuela Branch.
 To determine the effectiveness of e-learning system that provide
accessing educational content such as using mobile devices to access
educational assets, tools and materials at anytime and anywhere.
 To expound of the knowledge of the student about e-learning.
 To classify the terms of education and knowledge using the technology of
using e-learning system.
 To clarify what is the effect to the students and teachers if the e-learning
might be implemented

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study will benefit the following in different ways:

 To the Datamex College of Saint Adeline Valenzuela - it produce competent


students and teachers to become more productive. It enhances the facilities and
material used in e-learning system.
 To the School Administrator - the principal will benefit the success of the
advantages of e-learning by means of productive students and teachers.
 To the Faculty member - it provide easier way of teaching method that teachers
s interactive.
 To the Students - the result will benefit to them, that it enables students to
become more active in class and quick delivery of lesson.
 To the Parents - the research benefits the parents of the students who its helps
the parents to monitor the progress in school of their children.
 To the Future Researchers – the findings of this study may be used by future
researchers who will conduct related investigation. They could utilize the current
findings to support and substantiate the future studies conducted.

1.9 Scope

The respondents of the study are 70 selected Grade 11 to College students of


Datamex College of Saint Adeline Valenzuela Branch School Year 2018 – 2019, both
male and female between the ages 16 – 22 years old including all sections and strands.
This study aim to identify what is the Advantages of E-learning System among the
Students of Datamex College of Saint Adeline Valenzuela Branch.

1.10 Limitation

The study will not cover other factors such as implementation of e-learning
system, providing learning materials used on that system and

1.10 Explication of Terms

Computer literacy - is the ability to use computers and related technology efficiently,
with a range of skills covering levels from elementary use to programming and advanced
problem solving.

E-library - It's an electronic or online library where one can have access to books,
journals, novels, articles or any other information over net.

E-learning - learning conducted via electronic media, typically on the Internet.

Educational Technology- this refers to a combination of the processes and tools


involved in addressing educational needs and problems, with emphasis on applying the
most current tools for computers and other related technologies.

Facilities - a place, amenity, or piece of equipment provided for a particular purpose.

Instructor – a person who’s job is to teach a people a skill; an instructor is also a


teacher at a college or university, ranking lower than a professor.

Technology - the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in


industry.

Traditional Method of Teaching- This refers to the teaching method that employed
board, and eraser in teaching -English subject.
