2. PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

2.1 GENERAL
No user adjustable parts are within the equipment, either for calibration or service purposes.
The equipment housing must not be opened: the manufacturer's warranty and responsibility is invalidated by any
unauthorised entry into the unit.
In the event any repair or adjustment work being necessary, the whole equipment should be returned to LED S.p.A.
Service Centre in Via Selciatella, 40 04010 APRILIA (LT.) - ITALY, or to a other Authorised Centre, together with a
description of the fault.
Maintenance work by the user is mainly the cleaning of the exterior of the cabinet, cleaning and sterilization of the
accessory items and checking of the equipment before each use.
Carrying out function and safety check for verification of the parameters is demanded to specialized electronic or
biomedical engineer.

2.1.1 CLEANING OF THE CABINET

Switch the equipment off completely and disconnect the mains supply before any cleaning is undertaken.
Clean the outside of the cabinet with a damp cloth. No chemical should be used; a mild non-abrasive cleanser may be used
when necessary.

2.1.2 CLEANING AND STERILIZATION OF THE ACCESSORY ITEMS

The best thing to do is to use only one time use accessories and discard them after use.
Since some of the accessory items are to be used more than once it is mandatory to clean carefully and sterilize those
accessories before the new use.
The best way to clean and sterilize the reusable items is to follow the direction of the supplier of each item
When original reusable accessories supplied by LED S.p.A. are applied, the cleaning by using soft cleanser and
sterilization by steam sterilization at 121 °C for 35 minutes time is recommended.
When ethylene oxide is used a stand by time of at least 72 hours for the ventilation is recommended.
The responsibility to establish the efficiency of the above said sterilization cycle, which is safety for the accessories life, is
demanded to the user.

2.1.3 CHECKING OF THE EQUIPMENT BEFORE EACH USE

Each time the use of the electrosurgical equipment is planned a check of the most important safety aspects has to be
implemented considering at least the following:
Check the integrity of cords, connections, wires breakage, etc.
Assure that all the electrical equipment is properly grounded
Assure that all the accessories that should be used are available and sterilized.

3. CORRECTIVE MAINTENANCE

3.1 BLOCK DIAGRAM DESCRIPTION (ANNEX 1)

The DIATERMO MB240-MB380 Block Diagram shows the main assembly connections among the parts of the
electrosurgical unit.
No differences are between the 240 W model and 380 W model for what concern the circuit layout but, in the 240 W
model four SCH1085-4 H.F. Amplifier Modules are used, and in the 380 W model one SCH1085-4 and three SCH1085-5
H.F. Amplifier Modules are used.

3.1.1 ENTRY UNIT'S INSIDE

To enter inside the unit proceed as follow:
n Switch off the mains mechanical switch and remove the mains cord located on the rear panel.
n Place the unit with the rear panel laying on the workbench and the front panel toward the ceiling.
n Unscrew the four cabinet feet and the six screws on the bottom of the cabinet.
n Pull out the unity from the external cabinet.
n Place the unit in the normal work position i.e. with the bottom facing the workbench.
n Remove the three screws on the upper part of the rear panel and, after shifted the top panel toward the rear tilt-up it
toward the left side of the unit (looking it from the frontal side)
n Remove the Ground (yellow/green) wire.
In this manner free access to the electronic circuits is reached.

3.2 H.F. AMPLIFIER MODULE (SCH 1085) (ANNEX 2)

The H.F. Amplifier module feeds the energy to the output tuned LC circuit to which is connected via the JP1 connector.
The Mosfet Q1 is the most important element of this circuit. The Gate of this power element is connected to the mosfet
driver U1 that supplies this gate with a square wave signal at the tuning frequency.
The amplitude of the driving signal, coming from the pin 7 of JP2, and consequently the Q1 output current is controlled by
the power supply voltage of U1 coming from the pin 5 of JP2 through R3, that is used for the calibration of the module
amplification.
The value of the Q1's maximum load current is controlled by U3A which compares the calibrated voltage coming from R2
with the R1 voltage following the Q1's current. The output level of U3A is applied to the pin 13 of the U2D NAND, if this
signal go down the yellow LED (D5) lit and the input pin 5 of U2B go down and the incoming-driving signal is inhibited.
The temperature of Q1 is continuously monitored by RT1 and should it exceed 75°C +/- 10%, the pin 7 of U3B go. This
level is applied to the pin 12 of U2D and again the incoming driving signal is inhibited. At the same time the red LED
(D4) lit and a high logic level is applied to the pin 9 of JP2; this level is used in the Logic PCB (SCH1089) for the
generation of the OVH (Over Heating) warning signal.

3.2.1 CALIBRATION
Special, no commercial, instruments are requested for the calibration of the H.F. Amplifier Module therefore the on field
corrective maintenance should be limited to the replacement of the damaged units after have ascertain the availability of
the right I/O connections as previously stated.
Few tests can be carried out to judge the need of the replacement when in doubt:
* Switch off the equipment in which the circuit is used and test the resistance between the drain and the source of Q1 and
the resistance between the drain and the gate of the same Mosfet.
When an SCH 1085 module is to be replaced it is necessary to proceed as follow:
++ Unplug the connectors plugged to JP1 and JP2.
++ Unscrew and remove the damaged module.
++ Tight the new module to the cabinet
++ Plug the input flat cable into JP2.
With an oscilloscope test the pin 5 - 7 of the U1 IC:
* A low logic level should be present when the equipment is not in the power emission condition
* A square wave of about 500kHz frequency (the actual frequency is the equipment tuning frequency) and
amplitude depending from the pre-set output power level should be present when CUT emission current is
actuated.
++ Connect the module load by plugging the connector incoming from the Output Circuits Board into JP1.

3.3 LOGIC CIRCUIT BOARD (SCH 1089) (ANNEX 3)

The Logic Circuit Board is connected to all the previously described boards.
Each couple of signal incoming from the front panel encoders through the connector JP6 are applied to one of the
quadrature decoder/counter consisting of U21 and U22 together with the associated AND and NOR gates.
Here following is the description of one of these circuits. The two signals A and B incoming from the encoder 1 are
applied to the inputs of the NOR gate U23A so that any time both the inputs of this gate go to zero a positive signal is
applied to the reset pin of the counter U21A which is therefore zeroed. If one step positive signal reaches one of the two
inputs it is applied through a derivative CR network to the AND gate U18A or U18B that produce a short positive pulse
which through U23B increments the U21A counter.
The next positive pulse will increment again the counter so that the stored counts become two and the Q1 pin of the
counter goes to high level and allow the incoming shaped pulse to proceed through the AND gate U18C or U18D
depending from the direction of the encoder shaft rotation.
The pulses incoming from the quadrature circuits go to the inputs of the OR gate U13 that produce a interrupt signal for
pin 33 of the microcontroller U10 that scans the U15 multiplexer to know what encoder has been controlled and the
direction of the shaft rotation producing either the increment or the decrement of the previous stored value.
The new figure will be used depending from the selected function for the control of the output current.
The signals, at the tuning frequency, for the monopolar and the bipolar power amplifiers modules are generated by the two
VCO U4 and U5 and supplied to the buffer inverters U1 and U2 through the AND gate U3A and U3B controlled by the
pins 17 and 16 of the microcontroller U9. The right tuning frequency is calibrated, when the trimmers R15 and R20
connect the Output Circuits Board.
The output current of the equipment is controlled by varying the voltage supplied to the Monopolar and Bipolar Output
Power Modules by means of the amplifiers U6A and U6B that receive the correct voltage by the digital to analog converter
U8 which converts the digital value incoming from the pin 2 of U10. Naturally the digital value sent by the
microcontroller is depending both from the stored figure and from the other information the microcontroller has like the
actual requested output function and the correction given by the U11 memory to increase the output current linearity and
correspondence to the showed power level.
The microcontroller U10 and U11control all the interactivity of the equipment with the user survey all the warning signals
and generate the needed output waveforms to comply the output functions.

3.4 POWER SUPPLY PCB (SCH1090) (ANNEX 4)

The power supply board receives the input current by the voltage transformer Z88217 and consists of two sections:
1- the unregulated 50 V +/- 10% deriving from 36 Vac, rectified and filtered through 20,000 micro Farad
capacitor's battery utilized for the feeding of the primary windings of the monopolar and bipolar H.F. output
transformers.

SERVICE’S MANUAL SM129GBb 9

GIMA SpA DIATERMO MB240 – MB380

2 - the unregulated 20 V +/- 10% and the two regulated power voltage of nominal value of respectively 5 V +/-
7% and 13 V +/- 7%, all deriving from 15 Vac, for the supply of the logic circuits.
The presence of each of the output voltages is signalized by LEDs' illumination.
No works should be done, in the inside of the electrosurgical unit where the SCH1090 PCB is installed, until the warning
LEDs are illuminated, to avoid that the still present power supply voltages damage the connected circuits.
The circuit diagram of the power supply board is self-explaining; no calibration is necessary on this module.

3.5 CONTROL PANEL BOARD (SCH 1091) (ANNEX 5)

The control panel board includes all the front panel controls as well as all the displays and warning signals. On the same
board there is the control circuit of the mains electronic switch as well.
The control circuit of the mains electronic switch consists of the transformer T1 which when supplied by the mains
produce the voltage needed to the functioning of the relays K1 and to light the LED's array D1A -D1B i.e. "READY". The
coil of K1 is powered initially when the key S1, i.e. "ON" is pressed and then through the pin 4 of the relays itself. This
produces the actuation signal for the solid state relay and switches on the equipment. At the same time the READY LED's
array go off and the LED D2, i.e. "ON" light on.
This situation will be unchanged until the key S2; i.e. "OFF" is pressed to switch off the equipment.
As can be seen by looking to the control panel electronic diagram, this board consist of all the displays, keys, encoders etc.
those allow the interactive talk between the user and the equipment in order to know its functioning state and control it.
This board receives information from the logic board and sends information to the logic board. The active function of this
board is therefore limited to the conversion of the BCD digits to seven segments by U3, to the conversion of the BCD
address for the display to light by U1, and to the amplification of some of the driving signals by U2 and U4.
The rotary encoders E1, E2, E3, E4 have 32 CPR resolution, detented shaft feel and use optical reflective technology
providing high accuracy and reliability.
The relative position of the two waveforms gives the information of both the movement of the slide and the direction of the
movement. To interpreter correctly the encoder's information and avoid not true increments it is requested a quadrature
decoder/counter that is located on the Logic Board.
The Corrective Maintenance of this PCB does not require special instruments and the simplicity of the electronic diagram
allows on field correction of the fault should it be revealed.

3.6 OUTPUT PCB (SCH 1116) (ANNEX 6)

In the Output PCB are located both the Monopolar and the Bipolar HF output circuits.
The Bipolar circuit is very simple: it consists of an output transformer the secondary coil of which is driven at the tuning
frequency by the Bipolar Output Power Module via JP3.
The jumper JP4 is provided to help the service people to test the equipment without the power voltage applied to the power
output circuits; this allows more safety service operations to the output circuit integrity.
The Monopolar HF output circuit is a bit more complicated:
The secondary coil L1A together the capacitors C5, C6, C7, C10 and C11, those are connected in parallel, forms a
resonant circuit which is driven by three Monopolar Output Power Modules connected via JP2 to each of the primary coils
L1B, L1C, and L1D or L1E, L1F and L1G.
The three primary coils to be used are selected through K1 depending from the output selected function: when the SPRAY
coagulation is requested the L1E, L1F and L1G coils are selected, in all other functions are selected L1B, L1C and L1D.
The Patient Plate connection as well as the two control switches on the handpiece are to be continuously watched, for this
reason three completely insulated watching circuits are provided.
The free running oscillator U2 generates a square wave at about 50 kHz which is scaled down a factor 2 by U3 and
buffered by U4 before to be applied to the primary coils of the transformers T1, T2 and T3 through a serial impedance.
The voltage across the primary coil of each transformer will depend by the secondary load, i.e. from the impedance of the
Patient Plate connection or from the impedance of each switch contact.
The primary voltage is compared, with a share of the buffered driving square wave, by U5, U6 and U7, the output of those
are sampled by the signal incoming from the pin 5 of U3. The output signal of U8A, U8B, U8D, drive respectively U11,
U10, U9.
Each of the output level will thus depend from the respective watched impedance.
