BASIC CHEMICAL PRACTICUM II
DETERMINATION OF RELATIVE ATOM MASS Mg

I. Purpose
Students have knowledge about determining the relative atomic mass of
the Mg element from the MgO oxide formed through experiments.

II. Basic Theory

The atomic mass of an element is defined as the atomic mass of that
element compared to the atomic mass of other elements used as standard.
Based on international treaties in 1961, an atomic mass scale based on the
carbon-12 isotope was used. today, the relative atomic mass of an element is
determined by the mass spectrometry method.
in a laboratory, the relative atomic mass of an element can be
determined based on the mass of the oxide formed. for example if the
relative atomic mass of oxygen = 16, is set as a standard, then the relative
atomic mass of Mg can be determined from the mass of the formed MgO.

III. Tools And Materials

a. Tool b. Ingredients
- Burner - Mg tape
- Tripod - Litmus paper
- Porcelain triangle
- Krus
- Crucible tongs / crusters
- Balance
- Excitator

IV. Work Procedures

1. weigh the blank to the accuracy of ± 1 mgr. Weigh 1,00 gr Mg, put into
crushers.
2. Heat the crucibles with their contents, on a burner using a porcelain
triangle. After turning white, it is desirable to crush. Give a few drops
of water, until the steam that comes out does not blush red litmus paper.
3. Spread the crush to constant weight.
4. Want to be crushed then weigh.
5. Repeat steps 3-4 until the weight is really constant.
V. Hypothesis
1. Equation of reaction
a. Mg. Combustion reaction
Mg(s) + ½ O2(g) → MgO(s)
b. Mg is also given with N2 gas
3Mg(s) + N2(g) → Mg3N2(aq)
c. Then for the release of N2, Mg3N2 is air-detained so it is approved
with water
Mg3N2(aq) + 6H2O(l) → 3Mg(OH)2(aq)+2NH3(aq)
d. Furthermore, the reaction will occur after incandescence
Mg(OH)2(aq → MgO(s)+H2O(l)
2. Calculation
a. Crucial mass empty = 20.91 grams
b. Mg metal mass (a) = 0.1 gram
c. Mass (crush empty + Mg) after heating = 21.06 grams
d. MgO mass (b)= Mass (empty crucible + Mg) after heating – empty
crucible mass
= 21,06 – 20,91
= 0,15 gr
e. ArMg = 2x (a/b-a)xa
=2x 8/0,15-0,1 x 0,1
= 2x 160x 0,1
= 32 gr/mol
