PROBLEM SET

A. DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS
1. Classify each defined variable in Column A as indicated in the succeeding columns. Write
your classification based on the corresponding CODE defined in each column. (60 points)
Column A Column B Column C Column D
Defined Variable OPTIONS: If quantitative, OPTIONS:
QL =Qualitative classify as: N=Nominal
QN=Quantitative D= Discrete O=Ordinal
C= Continuous I=Interval
R=Ratio
1. Room Type in a Hospital
2. Patient’s Age
3. Respondent’s Sex
4. Zip Code
5. Years in Teaching
6. Trainings Attended
7. No. of Trainings
8. Type of School
9. School Passing Rate for NAT
10. Blood Type
11. Body mass index
12. Test Score
13. Grade Level Handled
14. Extent of implementation
(very high, high, moderate,
low)
15. Cancer Stage
16. Body Temperature
17. License number
18. Amount of fluid intake (ml)
19. Teaching Rank
20. School Fees (in pesos)
2. Given the population of the target respondents, determine the number of
representative samples to be taken using stratified random sampling. Margin of error (E)
= .05 (10 points)
MST = 560
MBA = 600
MPA = 458
3. Construct a 6-point scale for interpreting the obtained means in a survey questions
which utilized the following options: (5 points)
6= Excellent, 5=Very High; 4= High ; 3= Moderately Low; 2= Low; 1= Very Low

4. The Department of Public Works and Highways is charged with maintaining all national
highways in good condition. One good measure of road condition is the number of cracks
per 100 meters of roadway. From the department's yearly sample of 30 different parts of
roadway, these data were obtained:

14 17 19 18 20 20 24 23 22 26

23 23 28 24 23 24 25 25 23 26

28 26 29 26 28 27 28 29 30 30

Calculate the following: (50 points)

4.1 Mean, median, mode

4.2 Min, Max, Q3, D8, P45
4.3 Range, QD, Variance , Standard Deviation
4.4 Skewness, Kurtosis

TEST II: Formulate the null hypothesis (Ho) and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) of the
following problems. DON’T SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

1. . A drug manufacturing company claimed that the mean time of a certain brand of their anti –
hypertensive capsule labeled C – block to take effect is 15 minutes with a standards deviation of 3
minutes. In a random sample of 50 patients the mean time was 18 minutes. Test the hypothesis that
the mean time for the capsule to take effect is not 15 minutes using a 0.01 level of significance.

2. . A random sample of 35 packs of a certain brand of marshmallow have a mean weight of 7.4 grams
with a standard deviation 1.25 grams, while a random sample of 40 packs of another brand of
marshmallow has a mean weight of 6.5 grams with a standard deviation of 1.20 grams. Is there a
significant difference in the mean weight of these brands of marshmallow using a 5% level of
significance?

3. . Test the hypothesis that is no significant relationship between the sex of employees and their job
satisfaction level, if in a certain company in Makati, the following results were obtained. Use 0.05 level
of significance.
JOB SATISFACTION LEVEL

SEX LOW MEDUIM HIGH TOTAL

MALE 45 60 55 160

FEMALE 9 10 10 29

TOTAL 54 70 65 189

4. Three factory workers pack noodles in a plastic cup that must weight 200 grams. A random sample of
6 plastic cup were weighed and the result tabulated below.

W O R K E R S

CUP A B C

1 198 188 199

2 201 195 200

3 196 193 198

Is there a significant difference in the average weight of the cup noodles packed by the 3 workers at 0.05
level?

5. The table below show’s the grade Statistics (x) and the grade in Methods of Research (y) of 4
students enrolled in MBA program of Saint Paul University.

Grade in Statistics Grade in Methods of Research

(X) (Y)

Students No.

1 91 92

2 90 90

3 92 94

4 86 95

Is there a significant linear correlation between the student’s grade in Statistics and their grade

inMethod’s of Research.
