Difference between sprain and strain

The soft tissues of the body include the muscles, but are not part of the bony skeleton. Sprain and

strain are considered soft tissue injuries.

Sprainss

A sprain is an injury to a ligament.

Strain

A strain is an injury to muscle or tendon tissue.

Symptoms of sprain

Signs and symptoms will vary, depending on the severity of the injury and may include.

Pain

Swelling

Bruising

Limited ability to move the affected joint

Hearing or feeling a pop in your joint at the time of injury

Symptoms of strain

Typically, people with a strain experience pain, muscle spasm and muscle weakness. They can

also have localized swelling, cramping or inflammation and with a mirror or moderate strain.

1
Patients typically have a pain in the injured area and general weakness of the muscle when they

attempt to move it.

Grading system for strain injury

Grade 1 strain usually causes stretching of a few of the muscle fibers.

Grade 2 strain has more significant damage and some muscle fiber are damaged or torn.

Grade 3 strain is a complete rupture of the muscle.

Grading system for sprain injury

Grade 1 sprains occur when fibers of the ligament are stretched but turn.

Grade 2 sprain are injuries where the ligament is partially torn.

Grade 3 sprain occur when the ligament is completely torn.

Facture

A facture is a broken. It can range from a thin crack to a complete break. Bone can facture

crosswise, lengthwise, in serval places or in to many pieces.

Types of fractures

I. Greenstick

Incomplete fracture. The broken bone is not completely separated.

II. Transverse

2
The break is in a straight line across the bone.

III. Spiral

The break spiral around the bones, common in a twisting injury.

IV. OBLIQUE

Diagonal break across the bone.

V. Compression

The bone is crushed, causing the broken bone to be wider or flatter in appearance.

VI. Comminuted

The break is in three or more pieces and fragment are present fracture site.

VII. Segmental

The same bone is fractured in two places, so there is a floating segment of bone.

Prevention sport injuries

Exercise is good for the body and with the proper precaution, sport injuries can often be

prevented. The quality of protective equipment padding, helmet, shoes and mouth guards have

helped to improve the safety in sports.

Common sport injuries

 Sprains and strain

 Joints injuries knee, shoulder, and Ankle

 Muscle injuries

 Dislocations

 Fractures

 Achilles tendon injuries

 Pain along the shin bone

How to prevention sports injury

Develop a fitness plan that includes cardiovascular exercise, strength traing and flexibility. This

will help decrease your chance of injury.

Alternate exercising different muscle groups and exercise every other day.

Cool down properly after exercise or sport. It should take 2 times as long as your warm-up.

Stay hydrants. Drink water to prevent dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Learn the right techniques to play your sport.

Rest when tired. Avoid exercise when you are tired or in pain.

Always take your time during strength training and go through the full range of motion with each

repetition.
