LESSON TITLE: Cultural Appropriation Introduction

LESSON DATE: Monday, October 28/2019

RATIONALE
This is the first lesson of a unit on Cultural Appropriation as it relates to Halloween. This unit will specifically focus on Halloween
due to the time of year, however, it can be utilized any time during the year.

CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS
Big Ideas: Individual worldviews shape and our understanding of social justice issues.
Curricular Competencies: Use Social Studies inquiry processes and skills to ask questions; gather, interpret, and analyze ideas; and
communicate findings and decisions. Also, make reasoned ethical judgements about controversial actions in the past or present after
considering the context and standards of right and wrong (ethical judgement).
Content: Social Justice issues (cultural appropriation). Social injustices in Canada and the world affecting individuals, groups and
society.

LEARNING INTENTIONS
Students will finish the lesson understanding what culture is, as well as the definition of cultural appropriation. Students will begin to
form and voice their opinions about what may be designated as cultural appropriation.
PRE-REQUISITE CONCEPTS AND SKILLS
Students will need the ability to participate in classroom discussions and take notes on the topics.

Students who may struggle with note taking should have a copy of the PowerPoint printed out before class begins to assist in their

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION


Formative assessment will be in the form of observation during classroom discussions. Summative assessment will be in the form of a
quick write assignment (journal entry) where students take 5 minutes to write about their initial feelings about Cultural Appropriation.
