Reflection VII: The Mind Awakens

10/26

A man approaches a crowd, to which you are amongst, and says “God is dead; we have

all killed him.” What would your reaction be? Now that we are untethered from what was

our sun, will we spiral out of control? Should we still abide by his definition of right and

wrong?

Friedrich Nietzsche, a man with a mustache as big as his brain, has pondered these

questions. He questioned that if God had died one day, would we still abide by the same laws

of morality? If we are not being judged by a higher power, shouldn’t our allegiance then be

to the Earth? We no longer have to answer to a superior entity, we only have to answer to

ourselves; to each other. There will be some who react sad and gloomy towards this event.

They will not know how to function now that the one thing that was giving their life

structure is gone. Time can only tell if they will ever truly be able to get their bearings.

Alas! There are some amongst us who see this event as a new door. A door that offers a new
world of exploration; of thinking. They create their own path in life. This event is a new

beginning for them. These men do not follow the herd, of which does not allow free

thinking. These men are Ubermensch, or Uber Men, who create their own values. They see the

hive minded people the way we see apes; of a lower evolutionary class. These men are not

created from evolution, but from finding themselves. The herd hears of this man and

wants to be like him. They ask questions to try to see what they can do become a superior

being, but that is exactly why they will never be an Uberman.

One of the wisest men to ever walk this Earth, Socrates, has brought many

groundbreaking philosophical ideas to mankind. On Socrates death bed, he said “to live-

that means to be sick a long time.” This idea of life being worthless and meaningless

appears to be a common theme amongst philosophers; Nietzsche is no exception. He claims

that this train of thinking stems from the metaphorical diseases that is causing the

downfall of our society. If everyone saw how backwards everything in our culture is, we

would understand. Nietache, however, is the most nihilistic man to probably ever walk this
earth. Maybe his idea of existence only stems from his lack of morals, he has nothing to

cling to. He has the audacity to call himself an uberman, yet he still looks at the world in

an unfavorable way. Shouldn’t his ideals have sprung him to this new level of super man,

were what the rest of the world is doing is of no concern to him? I understand he wants

people to seek this knowledge he has apparently obtained, but by getting most, if not all

people, to think like him; isn’t he just creating a new form of hive mind? To quote

Syndrome from The Incredibles, “if everyone's super… no one will be.”
