REINFORCEMENT

1. Cutting and bending of rebars will be done on site in the bar fabrication yard and
reinforcement shall be bent in accordance with the requirement of BS 4466 to the
dimension and / or shapes as shown on the construction drawings.
2. All reinforcement shall be bent at temperatures in the range of 5 o C and 100oC by
means of a mechanical cutting and bending machine.
3. Cold-worked and hot-rolled bars shall not be straightened or bent again once having
been bent.
4. Where it is necessary to bend mild steel reinforcement already cast in the concrete,
the internal radius of bend shall be not less than twice the diameter of the bar.

1
5. Installation of rebars will be done accordingly to approved drawings to ensure that the
correct bars (bars diameter and type of reinforcement ) are fixed in the location, with
lap length and bar spacing as shown on the drawing.
6. Reinforcement in structures shall not welded expect where indicated in the
construction drawings or where permitted by the Engineer.
7. Unless otherwise permitted by the Engineer, all intersecting bars shall be tied together
and the ends of the tying wire shall be turned in to the main body of the concrete.
8. Reinforcement binding wire shall be no. 20 gauge galvanized iron wire. No splices
shall be made in the reinforcement except where indicated in the construction
drawings or where approved by the Engineer.
9. Reinforcement bars shall be prepared accordance to the approved construction
drawing provided.
10. All bar reinforcement shall be placed, supported and secured before the beginning of
concreting operation. The reinforcement shall be checked and approved by the
Engineer before placement of concrete begins.
11. Immediately before concrete is placed around it, reinforcement shall be clean, free
from mud, oil, paint, retarded, release agent, loose rust, loose mill scale, grease or any
other substance that can be shown to effect adversely the steel or concrete chemically
or to reduce the bond.

FORMWORK

1. In general formwork shall be construct of sound well-seasoned timber and / or

plywood. The formwork should be sufficiently rigid to prevent undue deflection
during the placing of the concrete.
2. Similarly strutting and ties to formwork should be strong enough and well secured to
avoid undue strain. Strutting shall be of minimum 50 mm x 100 mm timber.
3. The distance for column form ties is about 450 mm each other’s.
4. Material for formwork will be obtained from local suppliers.
5. The formworks shall be set to line within the specified tolerance and include any
chamfer, which may required.
6. Measurement for column can be made from string line set between corners for
alignment and checking column verticality by using plumb.

2
7. Formwork to the exposed surface of the surrounding walls will be made of new, 12
mm sound plywood and will be replaced as often as necessary to ensure an acceptable
finish to the concrete surface.
8. The joints should be sufficiently tight to prevent loss of grout from the concrete .
9. To prevent damage to the concrete, the surface of the form must be coated with a
release agent for example oil prior to concreting.
10. Immediately before concreting all shavings, loose wires and other debris shall be
removed from within the formwork.
11. Stripping of formwork shall be done after the concrete achieve with the strength
requirement as stated in the drawing or approval from the Engineer and the formwork
shall be removed without damage to the concrete in appearance, strength or durability.
12. Soffit formwork and props will be removed after 7 days or after concrete has reached
the minimum required strength which striking of formwork permitted.
13. For beams and slabs (above ground), calculation and diagram of scaffolding
arrangement will be submitted to Engineer’s approval before works commence.

CONCRETE WORKS

1. Concrete grade for each element such as pile cap, footing, column stump, ground
beam, column, slab, r.c. wall and other r.c. structure shall be as stated in construction
drawing and specification.
2. Design mix for each grade shall be submitted to Engineer for approval.
3. Concrete will be delivered to site by mixer trucks and placed directly where possible
and with the used of a mobile crane.
4. Concrete shall be so transported and placed that contamination, segregation or loss of
the constituent materials does not occur.
5. All formworks and reinforcement contained in it shall be clean and free from standing
water immediately before the placing of the concrete.
6. Concrete shall not be dropped freely into place from a height exceeding 4 meters.
When chutes are used they shall be kept clean and used in such a away as to avoid
segregation.
7. Slump shall be determined at each truck and 9 number of test cubes shall be taken at
the interval of 20 m3

3
8. Concrete cover required for ensuring that the reinforcement is correctly positioned
shall be made from the same mix proportion as the main concrete so as the produce
the same strength as the adjacent concrete.
9. After inspection, concrete will be poured in a sequence manner, vibrate and level to
the finish level.
10. A complete record shall be kept of the date, time and conditions of placing the
concrete in each portion of the work.
11. All concrete shall be compacted to produce a dense homogenous mass. It shall be
completed with the assistance of the petrol engine vibrating pokers.
12. Size of pokers heads will vary according to access through the reinforcement but
normally 50 mm poker heads will be used and no cold joint will be allowed to
happen.
13. The amplitude of vibrations shall be sufficient to produce satisfactory compaction.
14. During concreting, a sufficient nos. of the vibrator units shall be kept on stand-by at
all times to ensure that the compaction is not compromised due to mechanical
breakdown.
15. Vibration shall not be applied by way of the reinforcement. Where vibrators of the
immersion type are used, contact with reinforcement and all inserts shall be avoided.
16. Concrete shall not be subjected to vibration between 4 and 24 hours after compaction.
Concrete that has partially hardened shall not be vibrated.

CONSTRUCTION JOINTS

1. Construction joint for beam or slab or horizontal structure shall at two third or
one third of structure element.
2. The surfaces shall be roughened to exposed the aggregates without damaging it or
loosen the concrete. Where possible laitance and all loose material shall be removed
while the concrete is still green and no further roughening shall then be required.
3. The surfaces shall be washed with clean water to remove laitance and loose materials.
4. A 1:1 slurry of cements and sand shall be poured at that surfaces before continue with
new concreting work.

4
CURING

1. Curing compound shall be used as curing method. The proposed curing compound is
‘Calcure P’.
2. The curing compound shall be sprayed to the exposed surface 2 hours after
concreting works is finish.
3. For vertical surfaces, the curing compound will be applied immediately after the
formwork has been removed.

CASTING WORKS DURING RAINING

1. Casting work should be allowed to continue during drizzling.

2. However as a preventive action it shall be covered by plastic sheet.
3. During heavy down pour, casting works should not be allowed.
4. The casted area shall be covered and the concreting works shall stop.
