WHAT IS RESEARCH?
• Observational Method
• observe humans interacting with computers
• interviews, field investigations, contextual inquiries, case studies, field studies, focus groups, think
aloud protocols, storytelling, walkthroughs,
• The observations are more likely to involve note-taking, photographs, videos, or audio recordings
rather than measurement
• Experimental Method
• also called the scientific method
• experiments conducted in laboratory settings
• A controlled experiment requires at least two variables: a manipulated variable and a response
variable.
• HCI experiments involve humans, so the methodology employed is borrowed from experimental
psychology
RESEARCH METHODS
• Correlational method
• The correlational method involves looking for relationships between variables.
• For example, a researcher might be interested in knowing if users’ privacy settings in a
social networking application are related to their personality, IQ, level of education,
employment status, age, gender, income, and so on.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
• Internal Validity: is the extent to which an effect observed is due to the test
conditions.
• External validity: is the extent to which experimental results are generalizable to
other people and other situations.
INTERNAL VALIDITY AND EXTERNAL VALIDITY
• Evaluating new ideas for user interfaces or interaction techniques is central to research in
human-computer interaction.
• Certainly, more meaningful and insightful results are obtained if a comparative evaluation is
performed.
• The testable research questions above are crafted as comparisons (e.g., “Is Method A faster
than Method B for …?”)
