I thought that “Hawk Roosting” was very interesting.
In some ways, it was very similar to
Tennyson’s “The Eagle.” They both put to extensive use the symbolism and motifs present within birds of prey to illustrate an atmosphere of power, pride, isolation, and divinity. In The Eagle specifically, I found the high prevalence of death symbolism, imagery, and diction to be very interesting. Especially in contrast within the seemingly antithetical peace within the hawk. The hawk acts as a god does over its world, clutching Creation itself in its grasp and seeing the unchanging cycles of the world. I very much enjoyed it and thought that the poem had very deep, powerful meaning.
