Annotated Bibliography

In my essay, I will discuss the ways that stress and stimulus can affect the eyes, and

particularly, how myopia, or nearsightedness, is affected by different types of stress and

stimulus. I will look into the progression of myopia and answer if putting stress on the eyes will

worsen or accelerate the rate of myopia. I will also answer the question of whether or not myopia

can be reversed by stimulating the eyes from different kinds of methods.

AncestryFoundation. “Myopia: A Modern Yet Reversible Disease - Todd Becker, M.S.

(AHS14).” Youtube, Commentary by Todd Becker, 11 Aug. 2011,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5Efg42-Qn0. Accessed 19 Oct. 2019.

This speech by Todd Becker is posted on the Ancestry Foundation’s Youtube page, and

was posted August 14, 2014. Todd Becker’s main points of his speech is that myopia is a

widespread disease in today’s world and talked about how he has reversed his myopia by using a

method he calls active focusing. Becker starts off by saying how a majority of the population

wears glasses due to myopia, and it’s only getting worse. He says how we are told by our

optometrists that we cannot correct our vision without the use of surgery, but that is not the case.

Then, he states from the use of reduced lens and active focus, you can slowly correct your vision.

Becker then goes on to say that you eyesight while wearing glasses is like continuously wearing

a crutch. If you were to break your leg and then wear a crutch, you would need to take the crutch
Abushamma 2

off at some point in order to stimulate your leg to recover. The same thing is for your eyes. If you

continuously wear your glasses, i.e. a crutch, and never stimulate your eyes, then your eyesight

will keep getting worse or stay as bad as it is. If you cease walking on your crutch leg, your

muscles will state to atrophy and you will be weaker from before. These are the basic principles

that Becker says your eyes follow. By using a reduced prescription and actively focusing you

will provide the necessary stimulus for your eyes to regain its eyesight from nearsightedness.

Todd becker’s purpose for giving his speech was to spread his knowledge that he has

gained over the years about myopia and to inform the audience that myopia is a reversible

ailment. His speech was given a few years ago, so the information given in his speech is up to

date. The audience is from an Ancestry Foundation speech which means that they are curious,

ordinary people that are curious in what Becker has to say.

Although, he doesn’t go much into detail about was he his talking about and only gives

the audience an outline so that they can be informed and do further research themselves, he is

still every credible as he states that he himself has improved his vision back to 20/20 and has

papers from his optometrist proving this.

This speech relevant is relevant because everything Becker has to say about

myopia stimulating your eyesight is perfect for the essay I am writing.

Abushamma 3

This source is a case study about the holistic improvement of eyesight from the Sinclair

database posted in June, 2002. The main purpose of the study was to see if vision can be

improved naturally. In this case study, a patient used reduced eyeglass strength and various

holistic healing techniques for the main purpose of enacting a change in myopia.

The scientists purpose for doing this study was to see whether myopia was changed from

holistic methods. The study was most probably intended for optometrists and other professionals

related to eyesight.

I know that the author is credible because this study was published in a reputable medical

journal and the author used scientific approaches in the study. Although the study is quite old,

published in 2002, the facts within the study are quite beneficial even after a decade.

This source is relevant because the author goes through an experiment with the intent of

seeing whether eyesight could be improved and the results will be directly linked to my thesis.

This source was authored by Elizabeth Irving and Christina YakobchukStanger and was

published in September 2017. In this source, Elizabeth and Christina use control lens on baby

chicks in order to see if it has any effect on their myopia progression. During the experiment. A

variety of lens were used and alternated from the chicks. This experiment resulted in the chicks

myopia being reversed from the use of control lens.

Abushamma 4

The purpose of this experiment was to see if the baby chicks would reverse their myopia.

The experiment was done recently in 2017. The audience was intended most probably for

optometrists as this was published in the Journal of the College of Optometrists so much of the

presentation used in the experiment was geared toward professionals.

I know that this source is credible because this source was published in a very reputable

journal and has been peer reviewed by many optometrists.

This source is also very relevant as it gives a very clear conclusion as to if myopia can be

reversed by the use of reduced lens or not.

Quackenbush, Thomas R. “Holistic Eyesight Improvement.” Share Guide. Jan/Feb. 1999,

Issue 41. p20,

This source was written by Thomas Quackenbush in January of 1999. His main points in

the source is about how stress affects the eye and references William Bates in many of his points.

He also goes through methods of how to relieve stress on your eyes to combat the progression of

myopia.

Quackenbush’s main purpose of writing the article was to inform the audience about

ways to stop the progression of myopia. The audience is anyone that wants to know more about

stopping their myopia. In his article, he is very concise and wastes no time in getting to his

points.

Quackenbush does seem credible as gives many examples of how he has personal

experience and knowledge on the matter of myopia. He says that he has seen his methods work

many times. This article was written in 1999, but still holds much value for my essay. This

source can be used in my essay to provide examples of how stresses from everyday life might be

relieved holistically.

Adults.” Positive Health. Oct 2010, Issue 175, p1-1,

&db=awh&AN=57773338&site=eds-live. Accessed 19 Oct. 2019.

This source is written by Meir Schneider and Melissa Moody and published in October of

2010. This article starts by introducing how the authors was afflicted with myopia and ways they

improved from different methods. The author shares different exercises such as blinking,

sunning, and extending your periphery; all with the intention of slowly and consistently

improving the way that your eyes function and to teach how your eyes work again.

The purpose of this article was to persuade the reader that myopia can be reversed from

the incorporation of consistent habits in one’s everyday life. These habits are meant for teaches

your eyes how to properly focus and to relax your eyes. The authors intended the audience to be

skeptical toward improving your eyesight through habits, so for the first half of the article, the

authors provided a personal example of how they improved their eyesight. I do believe this

article is credible because of all the detailed descriptions and explanations of the methods geared

toward improving eyesight. Also, the authors provide a detailed description of how they

improved their eyesight fully. This article was published in 2010 so the information is quite

recent. The information presented in this article is relevant because I could list many of the

exercise and habits in the article as ways that one might improve their eyesight.
Abushamma 6

Steiner, Jake. “Your Eyes Aren’t Broken.” Endmyopia, https://endmyopia.org/. Accessed

19 Oct. 2019.

This website is authored by Jake Steiner and is being updated continuously. The

information is posted on a website called Endmyopia and is geared toward teaches the reader

about myopia and how to improve. The website actually starts with a list of scientific articles

teaches the reader that myopia can indeed be improved and the scientific studies is especially

good for people that are skeptical to the message of Endmyopia. Endmyopia teaches that through

the use of reduced lens, eye charts to record progress, using active focus from a distance,

stressing your focal muscles in your eye as little as possible, your eyesight will eventually correct

itself and go back to 20/20.

The purpose for providing the information by Jake Steiner was to spread all the vast

knowledge he has acquired through extensive research. He takes perspectives from many other

people, such as Todd Becker, and applies in to sections of hiow website. He designed his website

especially for his audience, which he thinks will be very skeptical as to whether myopia can be

cured naturally. He puts scientific articles on the front page and has eye-catching headers in

order to pull the audience in.

This website is very credible as it ongoing and always updated and extended. The

author has a lot of personal credible as he doesn’t stray away from giving personal information

about his eyesight, and he also has his own channel on Youtube that pairs nicely with the

information presented in his website. This website can certainly be used in my essay as the

scientific articles, Steiner’s own eyesight improvement, and the articles published in his article

are all relevant to the effects of stress and stimulus on myopia.

Warren, Mark. “Myopia Is Mental.” 2019. https://www.myopiaismental.com/. Accessed

19 Oct. 2019.

Like Jake Steiner, Mark Warren is also the author of a website that is continuously being

updated called “Myopia Is Mental”. In his website, he sets his articles chronologically

with each being necessary to read the next. His website is quite similar to Jake Steiner’s

Endmyopia, but he adds a few things that Steiner was missing. Firstly, Warren adds how

noticing peripheral movement is necessary when doing active focus and goes into detail

about how to practice this through peripheral triangulation.

The main purpose of Warren’s website is to explain that myopia can easily through

fize4d through reduced lens and noticing the movement in your peripheral vision. He

states that myopia is mostly mental in that you mentally block your eye’s ability to see

correctly. He also references Jake Steiner and Todd Becker in his website to relate how

their methods add to his own. He himself has said that through his method, he has

corrected his vision much faster than if he did it through Steiner’s or Becker’s and has

papers detailing his prescription lens to prove it.

This website is very relevant to my essay as it relates to two other of my sources that I

found to be relevant as well. This source is a great supplementary piece for those two

other sources and the new method of peripheral triangulation would be a key part of my

essay.
