Lesson 1: The Church's mission is patterned on Jesus'


mission

Programmatic Speech(Lk 4:18-20)- marks the start of Jesus'


Ministry.

Characteristics of Jesus' Mission


A. Liberating
• Free people from sins/cleanse the people away from their
sins.
B. Hope-bearing
• Jesus' teachings and practices become source of hope for
the suffering, marginalized and oppressed.
• Relevant texts: The beatitudes (Lk. 6:20-23), healing
stories
C. Inclusive
• Salvation is for all.
• Relevant texts: The parable of the good Samaritan,
Stories about Jesus eating with outcasts.

Lesson 2: The Mission Goal: Kingdom of God


• Core Value- LOVE
Descriptions of the Kingdom of God
1. Holistic
• It is not only limited to religious context but also includes
the socio-political and economic contexts.
Ex: Separation of the church and state:
• Makikialam pa din ang church kapag nakita nilang
inhumane na ang ginagawa ng government.

2. Present and future:


• The Kingdom of God is concerned about here and now
and not just the after life.
3. Gift and task
• God makes the kingdom and reality but we are the
instruments.
• It's our responsibility to be worth it.

Lesson 3: Mission as a Christian Imperative

Mission as a Christian Imperative: Being a missionary is given


to all christians; Once a Christian always a Missionary.
1. By virtue of baptism, mission is a Christian responsibility.
2. To be human is to be other-directed
• You do things not only for yourself but also for others.
• Romans 14: Don't Judge others, everything you do, do so
in the name of God.
3. The Church's link to Jesus obligates the Church to do mission
• The Vine and the Branches(Jn. 15:1-17): Jesus is the
vine, we are the branches and the father is the gardener.
• We can only bear much fruit when we are connected to the
vine.
• The apostles are not called servants, but are friends of
Christ because Jesus has revealed to them the plans of
the Father.

Lesson 4: The Church's relationship to the world is


missionary in character.
1. The Church as servant (Gaudium et Spes)
• The Church is to serve and not to be served.
2. The Church as leaven for society
• Church must read the "Signs of the times"
3. Church must learn from society
