Audition

Guidelines

Acting for Film applicants:
Please prepare two contemporary, contrasting monologues of approximately 60-90 seconds
per monologue. Please do not perform monologues from classical texts i.e. Shakespeare,
Chekhov, Ibsen, or original works.

Monologues must be age appropriate and from a legitimate source material i.e. published
from film, television, or theatre. It is highly suggested to read as many plays as possible in
order to begin to recognize the structure of a good scene. Please feel free to contact the
admissions office if you have any questions about appropriate material.

When choosing audition selections, it is important to choose material that is age and type
appropriate. It is also important to read the entire play or screenplay prior to your audition.

Look for material and characters that excite you and inspire a personal connection. The
more connected you are to the character’s circumstances, the more your talent and
personality will shine through.

Musical Theatre applicants:
Please prepare two contrasting musical theatre songs and one monologue from a
contemporary American play (each piece should be approximately 60-90 seconds in length).
Acapella auditions (singing without music) will not be accepted.

When auditioning in person, please bring your own accompaniment backing-track with you
on a USB or mobile device (instrumental only, no vocals). When auditioning at NYFA’s New
York City Campus, a pianist will be provided. Please bring sheet music in a three-ring binder
and in the correct key.
