and works of S. A. Ostroumov.

Fragments of the text that was published: Sergey A. Ostroumov … is the author of a scientific
discovery (Certificate and Diploma No. 274). He discovered new bioeffects of surfactants and
detergents and experimentally proved their ecological role as hazardous factors to water self-
purification, discovered the component of the ecological mechanism of water self-purification that
is most vulnerable to water pollution, proposed new fundamental concepts and terms of ecological
chemoregulators, ecological chemoeffectors, chemical ecoregulators, the polyfunctional role of
biota in water self-purification (Hydrobiologia, 2002, 469: 203-204), the level-block system of
principles for the analysis of ecological hazards from man-made impact on the biota, synecological
synergism of man-made impact (Doklady Akademii Nauk, 2001, 380: 714-717; DAN, 2001, 380:
847-849; DAN is the abbreviation for the title of the authoritative scientific edition, Reports to the
Russian Academy of Sciences), inhibitory analysis in ecology (DAN, 2000, 375: 847), ecological
repair and remediation, ecological clusters, proposed new parameters that characterize the role of
organisms in ecosystem.
S.A.Ostroumov proposed new modern conceptualization of ecosystem (DAN, 2002, 383:
571), and of the boundaries of ecosystems (Vestnik [=Bulletin] of Moscow University. Ser. Biol.
2003, 3: 43). He introduced new fundamental concepts of the principle of ecological uncertainty
(Ecol. Stud. 2004, 7: 138), new typology of migrations of elements and integrated abiotic-biotic
regulation of biogeochemical processes (Vestnik of Russian Academy of Natural Sciences 2002, 2
(No.3): 50), formulated the functions of the biota as a factor for stabilization of the environment
and climatic system of the Earth (Vestnik of Russian Academy of Natural Sciences 2003, 3 (No.2):
59), discovered new types of hazards from chemical pollution. He formulated the theory of biotic
self-purification of water and upgrading water quality (DAN 2004, 396: 136-141).
In his books 'Introduction to Biochemical Ecology' and 'Introduction to Issues of
Biochemical Ecology' he laid the groundwork and formulated basic principles for the new science
of biochemical ecology at the interface between ecology and biochemistry.
S.A.Ostroumov developed new methods for measuring the sublethal effects of xenobiotics,
and quantitatively measuring their effects on the efficiency of removing suspended matter from
water by filter-feeders; proposed the concepts of synecological cooperativity and ecological
taxation in biological communities, a new approach to monetary assessment of the ecological
services of aquatic ecosystems; applied the Liebig's law to human nutrition, which led to new links
among biochemical ecology and human nutrition science and to new application of ecological
science for strengthening human health; extended the scientific approaches of E. Schrödinger and
.
I. Prigogine by applying them to aquatic ecosystems (Ecol. Stud. 2004, 7: 122-126; Sibirsky
Ecological Journal. 2006. No. 3. P. 339-343), proposed a new method of recurrent additions to
study phytoremediation.
S.A.Ostroumov authored and co-authored over 300 publications including over15 books.
He was an invited lecturer and visiting scientist in the USA, Germany, UK, Netherlands, and other
countries.
He developed several new lecture courses, published educational textbooks on general
ecology, biochemical ecology, nature conservation and protection of biodiversity, water self-
purification. He also published new programs and curricula on ecological mechanism of water self-
purification, quantitative hydrobiology (aquatic ecology), environmental policy, ecology and
ecophysiology of plants, and biochemical ecology. After additional training at Central European
University (2002) he developed a new course curriculum on environmental policy and sustainable
development (published). After getting additional training and experience under the IREX program
'Contemporary Issues' at the University of Georgia (GA, USA) and National Science Foundation
(Washington, D.C.) he developed a new lecture course on ecological bioengineering.
S.A.Ostroumov is a Member of Scientific Council of the Ichthyologic Commission of
Russian Federation. He is the Chairperson of the Moscow Branch of Eco-Ethics International
Union. He is or was a member, the International Association of Theoretical and Applied
Limnology (SIL, 2004), American Society of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO, 1999, 2005),
American Association for the Advancement of Science (1996). Member, the International
Academy of Authors of Scientific Discoveries and Inventions. Member, Academy of Aquatic
Sciences, and International Academy of Ecology and Life Protection Sciences (IAELPS, since
2007). Chairperson of the organizing committee for series of scientific conferences and sessions.
In 1999 – 2008, organized 12 conferences and sessions in the USA, Denmark, and Russia. Current
or past member of the editorial boards of a number of scientific publications (Russia, USA,
Ukraine, India, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Kazakhstan). Editor-in-Chief of the series 'Ecological
Studies, Hazards, Solutions' and 'Science. Education. Innovations'. Member of the editorial or
advisory boards of … [titles of several journals]. He is involved in the committees for selecting
nominees for the honorary awards in ecology and environment, including the honorary title
'Aquatic Ecologist of the Year'.
He got some awards and certificates of merit: Scientific Discovery Diploma No. 274 "The
ability of synthetic surfactants to inhibit the filtration activity of bivalves" [priority of the
discovery August 9, 2000, according to the date of publishing the book: S.A. Ostroumov

Moscow State University; Diploma of the National Ecological Award 2004 (for contribution to
ecological security and sustainable development of Russia); Award of the Center of Anticorruption
Studies and Initiatives of Transparency International (Russian Branch), Diploma of the First
Degree for the books entitled "Biological Effects of Surfactants in Connection with the
