In the article, “Can The Disable Musician Sing?

”, we discussed how
various platforms, such as SingSnap, Bandhub, and Facebook greatly
benefit those with disabilities to learn, create, and post music. One
person in particular that is referred to quite often throughout the reading
is Julia Maritza Ceja. She is a young girl affected by blindness, autism,
and echolalia. However, she has a beautiful voice. She became an
online sensation after a video of her singing “I Will Always Love You” by
Whitney Houston was posted on Facebook. She comments kept rolling
in, spreading the positivity, awe, love of talent, and exclamations of her
inspirations. This video was later classified as “inspiration porn”, which
is best defined as “a representation of a person who has some
observable ‘stigma sign’ engaged in an everyday activity” (from the
article). Julia is a perfect example that anyone, especially the ones with
disabilities, has the opportunity to do great things, in this case, to learn
music. I felt that this article was not only about social media platforms
impacting the disabled, but about how music is an escape for some-
that’s how they show who they are, and how they feel accepted and
loved. It’s how they feel happy and satisfied. Music creates a strong
energy for people and people with disabilities. It is how they can
communicate. After reading this article, I want to help children learn the
ways of music. I want to teach them that music in itself is a separate
language. It can be fluid, it can be mad, it can be melancholy, it could
be happy, etc. Learning how to understand the language of music will
help these students to form relationships with others as well as impact
them tremendously.
From this article, I learned about different online platforms that help in
the creation of music and how social media can provide a positive
environment. I hope, some day after my college graduation, that I will
be able to positively impact the lives of children. I feel that in the world
of music, everyone has a chance to try something new- experiement
and have fun, and just show everyone and the whole world who they
are. Two questions I have are 1) Do you believe that people with
disabilities are capable of possessing many talents with music? Don’t
you feel that they deserve the same opportunities as people without
disabilities? 2) Are you aware that social media and online sites help
people with disabilities discover their talents and allow them to be who
they want? Did you realize that music is like a separate language
through which all people can communicate? Especially the disabled?
