Course Description: Art

Philosophy Statement
God is the ultimate and original Creator, Artist, and Communicator (Gen. 1; Jn.1); and He created man in His own
image (Gen. 1:27). Therefore, in order that students may be better equipped to fulfill God’s creative image and
communicative purposes for them they should be encouraged to develop their understanding of how and why
humanity communicates through creating art in its various mediums and forms. By learning how to consider and
evaluate art, and in using the themes of spirituality, the self, nature, and the city, students will be enabled to use the
context of art to both appreciate art and evaluate it. As God is inherently artistic and his artistic fingerprint is found
in all nature, we His image bearers should develop the ability to express ourselves artistically and appreciate the
artistic side of all that is around us. This course will also encourage students to test and see from a Christian
perspective a wide variety of art expressions that lead to truth, meaning, and redemption. Students will learn that in
God’s wisdom he has created us with diverse talents and abilities and art itself has multiple forms of expression.
They will learn to harness these forms and express and appreciate a variety of visial artistic genres. God has made us
with inquiring minds and He wants to guide us into all truth through His Spirit (John 16:13).

Course Objective
Students will develop the skills to “consider” or “appreciate” art, technical terms that mean how to identify,
describe, analyze, interpret and evaluate art (ESLR: ET). They will learn about the princle of art and technique (ESLR :
NLL). They will learn the formal visual elements and skills that art uses as means to communicate (ESLR: DC). They
will develop the skills in being able to express spiritual themes and emotional states artistically in a manner that has
appeal and portrays specific skills.

 Demonstrate critical thinking skills by observing, conceptualizing and organizing information.
 Demonstrate creative skills by using known skill and information to create art work based on the task given.

Student will get an introduction to the underlying principles of good graphic design, whether it is printbased, web and
interactive, or environmental. Students will develop the skills that mean how to identify, describe, analyze, interpret
and evaluate (ESLR: ET). They will learn about the princle of art and technique (ESLR : NLL). Designers are visual
communicators, often giving visual voice to new and provocative ideas. They create images that can inform, persuade,
and entertain millions of people. This comes with great responsibility, and it is crucial to be aware of the role of design
in shaping the world we live in, and changes in the discipline that transcend trends. (ESLR: DC). They will develop the
skills in being able to express spiritual themes and emotional states artistically in a manner that has appeal and portrays
specific skills.
