Dengue

While Africa faces hunger, and Syria faces war, our country, the
Philippines faces a life threatening issue once again, the Dengue fever. It
is a quite dangerous febrile disease may also cause death. It’s not
surprising that most people today got affected by the disease due to the
rainy season and unsanitary areas that caused the cases of the dengue
virus to multiply.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) 2009 case
classification, dengue is classified into dengue without warning signs,
dengue with warning signs and severe dengue. With 167,607 dengue
cases reported through the Philippines Integrated Disease Surveillance
and Response (PIDSR) system from the January 1 to August 13 2019,
including 720 deaths, it can be said that most Filipinos don’t know the
precautions and how to prevent this life-threatening disease.
But first we need to know the species that caused this kind of
disease and on how it is transmitted. Dengue is transmitted through a
bite of dengue-infected mosquitoes that are Aedes aegypti and Aedes
albopictus. These mosquitoes can lay eggs in any space or container that
holds clear and stagnant water like a bottle cap, dish dryer, plant axil,
gutter, trash can, old rubber tire, etc. They usually bite between 2 hours
after sunrise or at dusk and 2 hours before sunset or at dawn and can be
found inside and outside our houses. They are only transmitted through
mosquito bites and not through direct contact.
The most effective way to prevent dengue is still the 4S strategy.
The 4S strategy implementation calls for everyone to become prime
movers in controlling mosquito population and avoiding any possible
dengue deaths within the community. First is to search and destroy
mosquito breeding places especially in urban areas with an unsanitary
surrounding and stagnant waters. It is because mosquitos prefer to lay
their eggs and will cause to multiply the number of mosquitos in your
area.
Another one is to use self-protective measures like wearing long
sleeves, long pants, and light-colored clothes to prevent mosquito bites.
It is also necessary to use mosquito repellent like permethrin. They are
very essential these times especially because there is an outbreak, for the
dengue virus can only be transmitted through the bite of the Aedes
mosquito.
Next is to seek early consultation on the first signs and symptoms
of the disease. Those who have the virus will have symptoms that
include high fever, skin rashes, nausea, body ache, and headache. It is
important to seek early consultation between 1-3 days of fever to
immediately recognize the disease, which may require the patient to
increase fluid intake, especially Oral Rehydration Solution that is proven
to be life-saving for dengue patients. Dengue has no specific treatment,
but it can be managed early if you saw these signs and symptoms.
The last one is to support fogging or spraying only in hotspot areas
where increase in cases is registered for two consecutive weeks to
prevent an impending outbreak.

Small creatures are posing a big threat today. There's also no

specific treatment for this disease, but public health officials are in the
progress to develop sustainable prevention that will reverse the trend of
the emergent dengue fever. But right now, the only way that we can do
is to make a move as an individual by playing our part in the fight
against dengue by protecting ourselves and our home environment from
the Aedes mosquito.
