CPD on Roadway Infrastructure Systems
Course Assessment

This is an open-notes assessment. You can use additional credible resources to supplement your
answer, but you must indicate those sources in the form of a bibliography at the end of your
answers.
Answer all questions. You may use the reverse side of the paper and/or additional sheets if necessary.
Show your calculation steps clearly. In descriptive questions, you need to articulate your answer well.
1. (a) What is a “pavement”? What are its intended functions?

(b) Briefly explain how you would classify a pavement as “Flexible”? Illustrate your answer with
examples and sketches.

(c) Sketch a typical layer configuration for a high-traffic volume flexible pavement and briefly describe
the functions of each layer.

2. (a) Describe the following two pavement distresses and indicate the causes for each distress. Use
sketches to illustrate your answer.

(b)List five ways a pavement is evaluated for design and network management.

3. A pavement is designed for an analysis period of 25 years, and performance models predicted that
for a particular pavement configuration, rehabilitation must be done 9, 18 and 25 years from the
initial construction.
(a) Show this performance scenario in an appropriate chart and identify its key features.

(b) The pavement condition index (PCI) expressed on a scale of 0 to 100 for the first performance
cycle of the above pavement, is represented by the curve
PCI = 100 – 0.0024 t.5
Where t is the time since initial construction/rehabilitation (in years). If the highway agency has
a policy of allowing preventive maintenance (PM) only if the slope of the performance curve is
less than or equal to -15, calculate the window of time within which preventive maintenance can
be performed on this pavement.

4. (a) List the agency cost and user cost components typically included in economic life-cycle cost
analysis of pavement designs.

(b) In a pavement design exercise, three pavement configuration options are considered. Use
Life-Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) to determine the most appropriate design from the three
alternatives provided in the Table below. Use a discount rate of 3 percent. Disregard routine
and preventive maintenance costs.
Design Design Life Initial Rehabilitation Cost, $ Millions Salvage

5. Briefly describe the meaning of the two numbers of performance graded asphalt binder specification
PG 64-22

6. A triaxial resilient modulus test was conducted on a crushed limestone base material
specimen with a diameter of 6 inches. The original height of the specimen tested was
measured as 12.00 inches. When the specimen was tested at a confining stress (σ3) of 15 psi
and a total axial stress (σ1) of 30 psi, the axial deformation of the specimen was measured as
0.010 inches. Calculate the resilient modulus of the granular material.

7. Are you interested in taking any courses related to roadway design at a more detailed technical? If
your answer is YES, provide a list of such topics.
