FLOOR-MOUNTED HAWKEYE SERIES (HS) SENSOR SITE REQUIREMENTS

STANDARD MODELS: HS400FC, HS400LC/HS400LZ AND HS400FM
NARROW MODELS: HS400FCN, HS400LCN/HS400LZN AND HS400FMN
Use this document to determine if the selected site is suitable for installation of floor mounted Hawkeye Series
Sensors.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Hawkeye HS400FC, HS400LC/HS400LZ, HS400FM, HS400FCN, HS400LCN/HS400LZN and HS400FMN
Sensors require a Hunter PA Aligner with ProAlign® Alignment Software, version 1.5 or greater, to perform
alignments.
Hawkeye Series Sensors can be used with Hunter alignment lifts and alignment pits.

POWER REQUIREMENTS
Electrical power for sensor camera operation is supplied from the aligner console.
Hawkeye Sensor HS400LC and HS400LCN with adjustable camera height require the customer to supply
120 VAC (60Hz) 2 AMP, single-phase power source for the electrical motor.
Hawkeye Sensor HS400LZ and HS400LZN with adjustable camera height require the customer to supply
230 VAC (50Hz) 1 AMP, single-phase power source for the electrical motor.
An electrical outlet must be close enough to the base of leg to enable the 10 foot (3048 mm) electrical cable to be
connected.

LOCATION VERIFICATION
A concrete pad or floor at least 4 in. (102 mm) thick is the preferred installation surface. Floor-mounted Hawkeye
Series Sensor assemblies must NOT be installed on asphalt or other similar unstable surfaces.

Refer to the appropriate installation dimensions on following pages to determine sensor location requirements.

Measure the ceiling height of the installation location and verify the height provides sufficient
clearance. Take into consideration any ceiling mounted obstructions such as heaters, fans, etc.
Relocate power outlets, air lines, or other wall-mounted items that will interfere with installation.
Measure the length and width of the installation area to verify the sensor will fit bay with lift.
For bay lengths that result in a “good” or “better” installation, determine whether the resulting
range of alignment rack heights is acceptable. Refer to the tables within the “HS400FC Sensor
Performance,” “HS400LC/HS400LZ Sensor Performance” or “HS400FM Sensor Performance”
section.
Lay-outs of Hunter Lifts with Floor-Mounted Hawkeye Series sensors begin on page 19.
The anchor holes must be located at least 6 in. (152 mm) from the edge of the concrete slab (or joints, seams,
and/or saw cuts) to prevent breakout when the anchor bolts are tightened.
On parallelogram lifts (RL, RLHD, RM and RMHD Lifts), the horizontal position of the turnplate changes
significantly as raised. The desired alignment height will effect the location of sensor.
To allow for alignment on both, the front and rear turnplates, on extended lifts, the sensor location differs from
typical installations. Refer to page 16.

HS400FC Site Requirements

HS400FC Dimensions
HS400FC Sensors have a fixed camera height that is positioned to meet one preferred alignment height.

Top and Side View of Typical HS400FC Installation

Within the 105 to 64 inch (2667 to 1626 mm) specified range for the distance between the sensor and alignment
rack, sensor performance varies from good, better and best, as based on the range of heights and the vehicles
types that the sensors can detect the targets. Refer to following pages for further details.
To have the necessary wall clearance for installation, locate the back edge of the baseplate at least 1 1/2 in.
(38 mm) from the wall.

3
Use the table below to determine the correct location of the fixed cameras, considering the bay’s sensor-to-
turnplate distance and preferred alignment height.

NOTE: For sensor installations that the base plate is the minimum from the wall,
sensor to wall distance is 9 inches (229 mm) greater than referenced
sensor-to-turnplate distances in below table.

Good, Better and Best HS400FC Sensor Installations

A good sensor installation is possible with minimal bay length requirements. A distance of 77 in. to 64 in.
(1956 mm to 1626 mm) between the centerline of the turnplate and the bay’s back wall is enough room for a
good sensor installation that will serve the majority of alignment needs.
The smaller field-of-view of the cameras will limit the range of heights that sensors can detect the
targets and may also require narrow vehicles to be carefully centered on the rack.
Vehicles with a very small wheelbase (71 in. (1803 mm) or less) and vehicles with a very large
wheelbase (172 in. (4369 mm) or greater) may be difficult to align.
Better sensor installation is possible when the distance from the centerline of the turnplate is increased. The
distance of 105 in. to 81 in. (2667 mm to 2057 mm) between the centerline of the turnplate and the bay’s back
wall is a better sensor installation.
Less-than-optimal field-of view may slightly decrease the range of heights that sensors can
detect the targets.
For the best sensor installation, a distance of 97 in. (2464 mm) is between the centerline of the turnplate and the
bay’s back wall sets-up the bay and the minimum gap of 1 1/2 inches (38 mm) is behind the sensor.
Optimal field-of view will maximize the range of heights that sensors can detect the targets.

HS400LC/HS400LZ Site Requirements

HS400LC/HS400LZ Dimensions
HS400LC/HS400LZ Sensors have a vertical camera lift range of 63 in. (1600 mm). Cameras can be positioned
anywhere within camera lift range. The top of the camera is 114 1/2 in. (2908 mm) above the floor in the fully
raised position.

Angled Dimensions (Not Perpendicular to Bay Wall)

14
Lift Applications
All Hawkeye Series Sensors can be installed and operated with Hunter alignment lifts. Refer to the accompanying
illustrations for equipment and bay dimensions.

NOTE: Racks with electronic turnplates do not accommodate or require the use of
turnplate bridges.

4-Post and RX Alignment Lifts

Hunter 4-post alignment lifts include L401, L421, L404, and L424. Hunter RX alignment lifts include several
variations of the RX-9 and RX-12. Make installation measurements with the runways completely lowered to
improve measurement accuracy. With the RX-P Lift Racks, the alignment height is measured from the garage
floor and NOT the floor of the shallow pit.

L202 Lifts
The Hunter L202 alignment lift with the standard 93 in. (2362 mm) long bolster beam is NOT recommended for
use with Hawkeye Series Sensors.

Hunter L202 alignment racks that have the 100 in. (2540 mm) bolster beam with off-centered runway locations
MUST be retrofitted with the new 100 in. (2540 mm) bolster beam with the runway mounting holes centered.
These mounting holes allow the runways to be centered between the lift support posts for accurate installation
and operation of sensors.

NOTE: 100 in. (2540 mm) bolster beams with off-centered runway locations on
existing L202 lifts must NOT be re-drilled to center runways between the lift
support posts.

For new L202 lift installations, a 103 in. (2616 mm) bolster beam is available that maintains vehicle driver door
access and allows sensor visibility on the passenger side of the vehicle.

NOTE: Installation of the 103 in. (2616 mm) long bolster beam on Hunter 2-post lifts
already installed is NOT recommended.

Make installation measurements with the runways completely lowered to improve measurement accuracy.

NOTE: Vehicles with extra-wide axle assemblies, such as dual wheel rear axles,
may encounter rear target acquisition difficulty when aligned on 2-post lifts.

RL, RLHD, RM and RMHD Lifts

The RL, RLHD, RM, and RMHD lifts swing through an arc while elevating. Consequently, the runway distance
from the sensor camera lens changes vertically as well as horizontally. Hawkeye Series Sensors are designed to
allow this, but the cameras must be installed at the correct location in front of the runways in order to maximize
use of this design feature. The runways MUST BE AT ALIGNMENT HEIGHT (RESTING ON THE LEVELING
LEGS IF PRESENT) WHEN INSTALLATION MEASUREMENTS ARE MADE. If the lift runway is not at
alignment height when these measurements are made, the sensor’s field-of-view will be diminished.

PIT INSTALLATION
Floor-mounted Hawkeye Series Sensors can be installed in a pit. Install the sensor at the prescribed distance
from the turnplate centers with the crossbeam at the appropriate height for the pit’s depth (alignment height
measured from sensor’s baseplate to the rolling surface of the runways). Make certain that the leg of the sensor
does not block the technician’s movement within the pit.

HS400PS is designed to mount to the sidewalls of PN style pits. HS400PD is designed to mount to the sidewalls
of a two rack pit.

15
L401, L421, RL, and RM Extended Racks
Extended racks are available on L401, L421, RL, and RM lifts.

With extended lifts, the cameras are aimed so that vehicles with less than a 128 in. (3251 mm) wheelbase must
be aligned on the rear turnplate. Only vehicles exceeding a 128 in. (3251 mm) wheelbase can be aligned on the
front turnplate.

The distance from the sensor to front turnplate can NOT be reduced.

HS400FC and HS400LC/HS400LZ with Extended Rack

To allow for alignment on both the front and rear turnplates using Hawkeye Series Sensors, the
recommended distance from the centerline of the forward turnplates to the front of the baseplate
is 80 in. (2032 mm).

With the sensor placed at the minimum distance from the wall, a floor-mounted Hawkeye Series
Sensor installed in combination with an extended rack requires 89 in. (2261 mm) from the
centerline of forward turnplates to the wall.

The required distance from the top of the turnplates (with lift at alignment height) to top of the
cameras is the same as best lift installations.

Hawkeye HS400FC or HS400LC/HS400LZ Sensor with Extended Lift

NOTE: Due to reduction in the field-of-view, the alignment height may need to be
fine-tuned when aligning vehicles on the front turnplates.

16
HS400FM with Extended Rack
To allow for alignment on both the front and rear turnplates using Hawkeye Series Sensors, the
recommended distance from the centerline of the forward turnplates to the front of the baseplate
is 77 7/8 in. (1978 mm).

Hawkeye HS400FM Sensor with Extended Lift

NOTE: Due to reduction in the field-of-view, the alignment height may need to be
fine-tuned when aligning vehicles on the front turnplates.

17
Side-by-Side Alignment Bays Specification
Side-by-side alignment bays require a minimum of 12 feet (3658 mm) between the installation centerlines of the
Hawkeye Series Sensors. The sensors and alignment lift racks may require more spacing, depending on models.

Minimum Spacing Requirement for Two Alignment Bays (RX-9 shown)

NOTE: Four post lifts at 12 ft. (3658 mm) spacing is not advised.

18
Narrow Beam (Narrow Camera Support) Site Requirements:
HS400FCN, HS400LCN, HS400LZN and HS400FMN
Optional narrow camera support accommodates the use of Hawkeye Sensor with narrow two-post or four post
lifts
Narrow beam versions of the three floor-mounted sensors are available: HS400FCN, HS400LCN, HS400LZN and
HS400FMN.
A standard Hawkeye sensor may be converted into a narrow beam sensor with the HawkEye Narrow Bay Kit,
20-2254-1

Narrow Hawkeye Sensor Specifications

Minimum spacing between front posts of lift: 109 inches (2768 mm)
(Specification also applies to the spacing of two-post lifts)

Maximum width of vehicle outside-to-outside of rim: 74 inches (1880 mm)

Max wheelbase: 210 inches (5334 mm)

Maximum steer angle: 38 degrees

Narrow Camera Support Dimensions

The length of the beam is reduced by 10 inches (254 mm).

Top View of Narrow Beam

Use the following site requirements to determine if selected site is suitable for installation of floor-mounted
Hawkeye Series Sensors with a narrow beam.

There are three appropriate sensor-to-turnplate distances when using a narrow beam:

- best distance

- eight inches less than best and

- sixteen inches less than best.

19
HS400FCN, HS400LCN and HS400LZN (Narrow Beam) Site Requirements
HS400FCN Sensors have narrowed cameras at a fixed height that is positioned to meet one preferred alignment
height. HS400LCN/HS400LZN Sensors have narrowed cameras that can be positioned anywhere within camera
lift range.

To have the necessary wall clearance for installation, locate the back edge of the baseplate at least 1 1/2 in.
(38 mm) from the wall.
Proper installation with alternate camera aiming points is required.

HS401FMN (Narrow Beam) Site Requirements
HS401FMN Sensors have narrowed cameras supported in a fixed position with a two column structure that spans
the width of the bay.

NOTE: For sensor installations that the base plate is the minimum from the wall, the
sensor-to-wall distance is 11 1/8 inches (283 mm) greater than referenced
sensor-to-turnplate distances in below table.

Use the table below to determine the structure height that places the fixed cameras at correct location,
considering the bay’s sensor-to-turnplate distance and preferred alignment height.
