Dear Diary
Today I am very excited because I attended some
schools with our Prime Minister Narendra Modi
under his interaction programme with the students
of the schools across the country on the occasion of
Teacher’s Day. Indeed our Prime Minister Narendra
Modi is a great person. In spite of being a prime
minister, he visited a number of govt. schools and
interacted with students. He appreciated all the
teachers for their great contribution to the education.
He encouraged the students to do the best in studies.
He told them, “You are the future of the country.
So be ready to take your country on the zenith of
success.”
This is really a praiseworthy programme. This
programme motivates the teacher and the students.
I salute our Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this
programme.

Dear Diary
Today an inter-school cricket match was organised
in our school playground. The match between our
school and St. Joseph School started at 10:00 am. The
Collector of our district was the Chief Guest. He sat
with the Principal and teachers of both the schools.

 The playground was crowded with the spectators of
both the schools. Our school cricket team won the
toss and decided to bat first. The first two players
could score only 12 runs off 24 balls but the third
wicket who was the captain scored 32 runs off 36
balls and the score reached 44. The match was of
15 overs. So in 15 overs our school cricket team
scored 66 runs. Then it was the time of lunch break.
After lunch, the players of St. Joseph school started
batting. The first three wickets scored 38 runs in 6
overs. They played excellent but the rest wicket got
out one after another only in 3 overs and could add
only 18 runs.
Finally our school cricket team won the match. The
captain of the team became the hero. He was given a
cricket bat and a ball as a prize by the Collector. All
teacher, students and other school showered praises
on him.

Dear Diary Sushank
Today, for the first time, I went to a PVR cinema
hall with my parents to watch a movie. Indeed I was
very excited while watching the movie namely ‘Mary
Kom’. The movie is based on well-known boxing
player Mary Kom who won bronze medal at London
Summer Olympics 2012. Prinyanka Chopra played
the role of Mary Kom.
Mary Kom’s father does not want Mary Kom to
become a boxer as she is a girl but she has a great
passion to become a good boxer. She joins a boxing
institute for boxing practice. Her father always
forbids her to do so but she keeps on participating
in different games. Her boxing coach encourages her
to participate in 2008 World Boxing Championship.
As a result, she participated in it and won a silver
medal. Then a bronze medal in the London Summer
Olympics 2012.
Indeed the movie is very inspiring. It gives a message
that if one has firm determination to achieve some
thing, one will achieve it irrespective of one’s status.

went on a tour to Sitlakhet, a beautiful hill station
in Almora, Uttarakhand. Our journey to Sitlakhet
was very enjoyable. On the way to Sitlakhet we
played antarakshari with our classmates in A/c bus.
We reached Sitlakhet at 1:00 pm. Then we went to a
restaurant to have lunch as we all were feeling very
hungry. After lunch, we went to some orchards and
green forests which were undoubtedly very charming.
Then we went on mountains. Then we visited Shyahi
Devi Temple which is atop a small hill, 3 km from
Almora. The goddess Shyahi Devi is known as the
saviour of Almora. As we went there during Navratri,
when fairs are held at Shyahi Temple, we enjoyed
the fairs enormously. Our teachers always were with
us and they gave brief description about different
beautiful places in Almora. We stayed there for three
days and finally on 15th, we returned to our town.

Dear Diary
Today I am in very depressive mood. I went to
Jammu & Kashmir witness the flood scene a few
days ago with my parents. I returned from there only
today at 10 am, there we reached the flood scene, I
was moved to see the miseries of the flood victims.
They were living under tents as their homes were
washed away by the floods. We met some of the flood
victims and asked what kind of difficulties they were
facing with. They replied that they had to wear a
pair of torn clothes for a week as they do not have
other pairs. They had to live hungry for hours as they
waited for the helicopters that dropped food for them.
My parents gave a cheque of ` 5000 as a donation to
the flood victims. In my opinion, all people should
provide their help to them so that they can restart
leading a good life.

is visible from most parts of Shimla. Then we
went for skiing in Kufri. We enjoyed skiing a lot.
Besides, we visited Himalyan Bird Park, Shimla
Reserve Forest Sanctuary, Ridge, Scandal Point,
Chail, Christ Church and Tallapani.
Indeed, we extremely enjoyed our visit to Shimla.

1. A Good Citizen
A good citizens is one who tries to work for the greatness
and glory of his country. He is faithful to his country and
is ready to sacrifice everything for the honour of the land.
He must be law abiding and must respect the traditions
of his country. He should make all possible efforts to
remove the social evils which are the bane of the society.
He must live in peace with his fellow citizens and help
the state against all criminals and law breakers. He is
not blindly conservative and he is progressive in his
outlook. A good citizen must be committed to the high
ideals and work for the betterment of his country. He
should work for the unity in the country and does not
do anything which might harm the solidarity of the
country. He knows that if his countrymen are not united,
the nation shall face danger from other countries hostile
to us. He is kind and sympathetic towards everyone. He
respects this rights and privileges of others. He does
not do anything which might have bad effect on others.
He is honest and diligent and works for the good of his
fellow citizens.
2. The Place of Women in Indian Society
In Indian society, women have been given a better
position than that of men. We can see their presence in

every walk of life. Ranging from topmost constitutional
position of a prime minister and president to constable
and metro driver, they have marked their presence.
Now women are police officers, judges, bank managers,
army officers, pilots, etc. They are holding positions
of responsibility in various spheres of life. They are
successful in the field of business and commerce. More
and more women are coming out of the four walls of their
houses. Literacy rates in women have witnessed a sharp
rise during the post-independence era.
But there is no deying the fact that the rise in social and
economic status of women has added to their burdens
and responsibility. They are still slaves as they have to
do double duty—as employed women and as working
housewives. Despite all achievements and progress,
women still have to depend on male members of the
family for their protection during different phases of
their life. At times they have to depend on their father.
Then there are husband and again sons. They are not
given freedom to take the decision of their life. In our
male-dominated society, women are still regarded as
inferior to men.
Therefore it is the crying need of the hour that women
should awake and arise against their exploitation.
3. The Importance of Moral Education
In our country the introduction of a new education
system is essential which must be in tune with our
major values of national tradition and integration. This
system can only nourish and strengthen our national
consciousness.
Human actions are judged as good or bad right from
ethical point of view. These judgments are always
determined by the common moral standard of our
society. In a nutshell, morality means honesty of
characters, fairness in attitude, absence of evils like
hatred jealousy, greed, telling lies, etc. This ultimate
objective of education is to inculcate these human values
in the students.
Moral education can be given through value education
curriculum by all boards and universities. At school
level, the syllabus should include folk tales, stories of
patriotism, biographies of great men, poems, parables
providing valuable lessons for the student. As character
is necessary for individuals, it is also necessary for a
nation. A nation cannot make progress if it has lost its
character. Thus introduction of moral education from
grassroots to university level is very necessary.

 4. Environmental Pollution
The introduction of harmful pollutants into the
environment is called environmental pollution. It
has hazardous effect on the natural world and on the
activities of living beings.
The industries all over the world that brought prosperity
and affluence, made inroads into the biosphere and
disturbed the ecological balances. The pall of smoke, the
swirling gases, industrial effluents and the fall-out of
scientific experiments became constant health hazards,
polluting and contaminating both air and water.
The smoke emitted by vehicles using petrol and diesel
and the cooking coal also pollutes the environment.
The contaminated water that we drink creates a number
of incurable diseases.
Air-pollution may cause severe lung-diseases, asthma,
brain-disorder diseases, etc. Soil-pollution may have
negative effect on farm output ratio. Noise-pollution
causes deafness, tiredness, and mental losses.
In order to deal with environmental pollution, the
Government can at least see that future factories are
set up at a distant place, an industrial complex far
away from township. Deforestation should be stopped
and forestry should be developed. Discharge of Factory
wastes in rivers should be banned.
5. Meaningful Use of Leisure Time
Leisure implies free or unoccupied time, when there is
freedom from the demands of work or duty. Today people
live under constant stress and demands of modernity.
As a result, they are prone to physical and psychological
problems. It is essential to spare some time from a
mechanical routine and spend this time to rejuvenate
the mind and the body.
We can utilise our free time in a variety of ways. Reading
is one of the most popular free time activities. A wide
range of subjects and the existence of well-maintained
libraries has made reading a very rewarding and
affordable activity. From simple entertainment to highly
specialised discourses, reading invariably contributes to
one’s knowledge and helps widen one’s perspective. Other
common activities are music, gardening, carpentry,
cooking, etc. One can also choose from activities which
are directly relevant to the society, like special work,
caring for abandoned and stray animals, caring for the
environment, etc. Activities in the areas enumerated
above impart s sense of achievement besides giving
meaning and purpose to life. Activities like carpentry,

painting and clay-modelling help satisfy the creative
impulse in many an amateur artist. Besides, we should
spend some time in socialising. It is a healthy activity
and promotes goodwill and mutual understanding
among people.
We should play outdoor games also. It has the advantage
of catering to physical fitness and thus helping to
develop a healthy attitude towards life.
6. Disaster Management
The term 'disaster management' refers all aspects of
preventive and protective measures, preparedness,
and organisation of relief operations for mitigating the
impact of disaster on human beings and socio-economic
aspect of the disaster prone areas.
We can divide the whole process of disaster management
into three phases: impact phase, rehabilitation and
reconstruction phase and integrated long term
development and preparedness phase.
There are three components of impact phase : forecasting
of disaster, close monitoring of agents causing disasters
and management activities after the disaster has
occurred. In order to forecast about flood, one needs to
study. Approach of cyclone can be tracked and monitored
by satellites. Then early warning and evacuation efforts
may be made. Close monitoring of agents responsible
for disaster can help deployment of teams to help
evacuation and supply of goods, clothing and drinking
water. Disaster leaves a trial of death and destruction.
This will require medical care and help of various kinds
to the affected people. Under long term development
phase preventive and precautionary measures of various
kind should be implemented.
7. Population Hazard
There is no denying the fact that the rate of population
increase has gone down, but the balance between the
optimum population growth and a healthy nation is far
to be achieved.
Ignorance, illiteracy, unhygienic living and lack of
proper recreation are the main causes of population
hazard in India.
People, themselves must realize the merits of small
family. They should be encouraged to adopt preventive
checks—checks that control the birth rate. Religion also
adds to the growth of population. Some communities
consider any mandate of statutary method of prohibition
to be sacrillious. India, being a secular state, cannot
exercise any check or restraint on religious grounds.
The importance of a higher standard of living should
be inculcated in the mind of the people. The desire

for better living conditions automatically works as a
deterrent to heavy increases in population. It restricts
the population explosion and thus tends to keep high
the efficiency of our existing population. Education at
the grass root, more equitable distribution of the natural

These measure alone can bring about a kind of effective
control over the population problem.
8. Work is Worship
This is an oft saying proverb that work is worship, which
means there is no better way to worship God except to
be hardworking. Man owes all his greatness to hard
work. Hence, it is the root of all success. There is no
alternative of hard work. Today man has conquered
nature, he has set foot on the moon, he has travelled in
the space, he has invented so many life saving drugs—
all became possible because he never avoided work. We
see wonderful progress in the field of agriculture and
industry.
God also gets impressed and helps and cooperates only
those who are hardworking and sincere. God does not
love being worshipped by a person each second. He
wants that a person works hard. So, it is not useful if we
worship God all the time and do not work at all.
Some useful people who believe that it is luck that plays
a significant role in anybody's life. Thus, they avoid
work and wait for the miracles, which according to them
must occur in their life and consequently they would
get all those things which they wish for. But the reality
is that no such miracle happens particularly when we
don't work.
9. Our National Festivals
In our country people of different religions, regions and
cultures live together with peace and harmony. India is
worldwide known for its cultural diversity and colorful
festivals. Apart from these festivals, we also have
national festivals such as the Independence Day, the
Republic Day and Gandhi Jayanti.
We celebrate Independence Day to mark the
independence of India. India became independent on
August 15, 1947, after the British left the country.
Since then, August 15 is celebrated as the Independence
Day. On this day, various formal events including flag-
hoisting and march in all states, districts, panchayats,
schools, colleges are organized to commemorate the day
of freedom. The Prime Minister of the nation hoists the
tri-color national flag (Tiranga) at the Red Fort and
addresses the nation from its rampart.
We celebrate Republic Day on January 26 to
commemorate the adoption of our Constitution. As per
the records, the Constitution of India came into force
on January 26, 1950 by replacing the Government of

Like the Independence Day, flag hoisting ceremony and
cultural programmes are organized across the nation on
the Republic Day.
Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth

Gandhi. Every year, this auspicious occasion is
celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm. People
across the nation offer prayer services and tributes to
Gandhiji on this day. Various cultural programmes
showcasing Gandhi ji's life and struggle for independence
are organized, at school, colleges, government and
private organizations, etc. Also, different types of
competition, such as essay writing, painting etc are
organized to remember the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.
10. Indian Farmers
It is indeed a matter of shame for us as the food
producers in our country have to die out of hunger. India
is mainly an agricultural country. Agriculture is the
backbone of our economy. The farmer is an important
part of agriculture. It is the hard work of the farmer
which brings prosperity in the country.
The farmer has to lead a tough life. He gets up early in
the morning. He takes his plough and oxen and goes
to the field. His wife and children also help him in his
work. His routine does not change even in biting cold.
The farmer remains busy in tillng the fields, sowing
seeds and reaping crops throughout the year. The farmer
takes great care of his crops and dreams of good crops.
Sometimes adverse weather condition causes severe

to resist at times. But, fast food can be one of the
unhealthiest options out there when it comes to your
diet.
Fast food includes fried food with little nutuitional
value. It doesn't take long for the calories and fat to
add up. Most fast food items are very high in sodium
and cholesterol. These meals contain very little fiber,
vitamins and other nutrients the body needs to properly
function.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH),
fast food consumption is strongly associated with insulin
resistance. This greatly increases an individual's risk of
developing type 2 diabetes. The NIH also explains that
fast food consumption may lead to obesity. One study
found that a person who eats fast food at least two times
a week will gain at least 10 pounds of extra weight.
A poor diet like one obtained from fast food often leads
to high blood pressure. In turn, high blood pressure is
the leading risk factor for stroke. According to Corporate
Accountability International, one-third of cancers are
related to poor diet. This is often paired with the fact
that obesity is closely linked with cancers of the colon,
kidney and esophagus.
Children who eat fast food regularly have a higher
risk for developing asthma, hypertension and high
cholesterol.
Besides, it may lead to improper growth and development
in children and teens. In fact, diet is one of the

story lines of those films. Girls and boys are the easiest

that some part of it might leave a negative impression
on them. Knowingly or unknowingly the films mold
the youth of today in one way or the other and effect

1. Celebration of Teacher’ Day

In Tagore Public School, Delhi, Teacher’ Day was
celebrated on Monday, 5th September with great
pomp and show. The member of the Students Council
organised a great show dedicated to their teachers. The
assembly was commenced by Yashita, a student of class
XI of the school. She drew the attention of everyone
towards the contributions of the teacher to the student’s
life. She said that teachers have a unique place in the
life of every student. No one can think of achieving
success without proper guidance and instructions of
teachers.
TEACHERS’ HANDBOOK
Rehan, Renu and Saurabh of Class VI, sang some song
in dedication to teachers. Group dances by the students
of Class VI onwards were performed. Then comedy
skit was performed in which students mimicked their
teachers.
Then Principal came on stage and shared a few words
of encouragement for the students. He also distributed
prizes to good performers. The first Prize was given
to Subhash Group of Class VIII for the best dance
performance.
Finally, all students and teachers were served with
snacks.
2. Participation of Public of our Locality in
‘Swachha Bharat Abhiyan’

The people of Janakpuri, Delhi participated in ‘Swachcha
Bharat Abhiwan’ with great enthusiasm on 2nd October,
20xx. A member of each family irrespective of their
social status, came out of his/her home with a groom in
his/her hand and participated in the Clean India Drive.
They swept the entire area of Janakpuri with groom and
picked up wastes lying here and there. They picked up
even cow dung with their hand.
In the evening of the day a stage function was organised
in which different people gave some instructions
to people of the locality. They told the people to
convert insanitary toilets into clean flush toilets. They
maintained and spread cleanliness awareness among
people. They requested the people to take up this
campaign as their responsibility and join hands together
to make it a triumphant mission. After all cleanliness
is next to godliness.
3. Tree Plantation Drive
(Report by Karan)
On the occasion of Children’s Day, on 14th November,
Sunrise Public School, Gurgaon organised the Tree
Plantation Drive. Almost all students of the school
participated in the Tree Plantation Drive. Actually each
student of the school was asked by their respective class
teacher to bring a sapling to plant at school. Though only
one-third of the students brought saplings to the school,
all students participated in planting them in and outside
the school campus by helping one another somehow or
other. Some students planted more than one sapling.
The Principal, teachers and all other school staff were
also helping them. Students showed great enthusiasm in
planting them as they knew that their hard work would

provide oxygen, check pollution, recharge ground water,
prevent soil erosion and forest will become more dense.
As a matter of fact, all of us should plant at least one
sapling in our area.
4. Science Exhibition in Bharati Public School

Science Exhibition was hosted by Bharati Public
School, Noida on 16th August, 20xx. Many schools from
Noida participated in the exhibition. The theme of the
exhibition was ‘The Importance of Science in our Lives’.
Many innovative working models and investigation
based projects were exhibited in the programme. The
exhibition was inaugurated by the DM of Gautambudh
Nagar. The exhibits by the different schools were
indeed eye openers on various topics related to Green
Energy, Innovation in Transport, Communication,
Agriculture, Technology, Bio-diversity, Community,
Health, Environment and Mathematical Modelling.
The exhibition was organised with an endeavour to
promote scientific attitude among budding students.
The DM applauded the students for their novel ideas
which would help the world to become a much better
place to live in.
5. Poster Making Competition

On the occasion of Diwali, a poster making competition
was organised on 25th October, 20xx in Dwarka
Sector-10. Some people of the locality participated
in the competition and expressed their views on how
Diwali can be celebrated pollution free. They presented
their thoughts in effective ways. Delhi Municipal
Commissioner was the Chief Guest. The people whole
heartedly participated in the competition. They showed
amazing creativity.
The efforts made by the people to make posters were
appreciated. The Professor of English Literature from
Delhi University was the judge of the competition. He
gave first, second and third prizes to the best three
posters.
6. Massive Fire in Kohat Enclave
(Report by Nibha)
The last night a fierce fire broke out in the market
of Kohat Enclave, New Delhi. The fire broke out at
midnight and hence there were only a few persons in
the market. Soon someone dialled no. 101 to call fire
brigade but fire brigade reached there late. As a result,
many shops guitted into fire. Some jewellery shops also

caught on fire. It is estimated that the property worth
rupees a crore was burnt to ashes. However no loss of
human life has been reported so far. The shopkeepers
of their respective shops were depressed and dejected.
They blamed the fire brigade for so much loss of property
as they reached the accident spot late.
7. Devastating Earthquake in Bhuj
(Report by Reema)
The last night at 1:36 am an earthquake measuring
5.6 on the Richter Scale took place in Kutch district
of Gujarat. The epicentre of the earthquake was at
Bhuj. Therefore, huge loss of property and human lives
occurred in Bhuj. About 100 houses were collapsed.
Thousands of people became homeless. The death toll
in Bhuj was 12. Many historic structures of tourist
attraction were destroyed. The quake destroyed two
schools, a hospital also. It also destroyed 60% of food and
water supplies. The Indian military provided emergency
support. Later a many NGOs and common people came
forward to help the victims of the earthquake.
8. STORY WRITING
1. Two Foolish Goats
Once a goat had to cross a small river. A narrow plank
was across the river. The goat was walking on it happily.
It saw another goat coming towards it from the opposite
side. The bridge was so narrow that it was impossible
for them to pass beside each other.
“Go back" shouted the first goat. I will cross the river
first. Then you can". “Why should you?" shouted the
second goat. “I came first here so I should cross first,"
the second one said. “No…I came first," shouted the first
goat. It further added, “Go away or I will kick you" “Wait
and see." The first goat said. “I will kick you first," The
second goat also said. The both goats went into a rage
and started arguing. They attacked each other. As a
result both the foolish goats fell into the water running
in the river.
Moral : Our anger leads us to destruction.
2. The Fox and the Goat
Once a fox fell into a well, though it was not very deep.
He tried his level best to come out of the well but he
failed to do so. After a long time, a thirsty goat came by
and peeped into the well. He saw the goat at the well.
The goat thought the fox had gone down to drink water
and so he asked if the water was good.
"The finest in the whole country," said the crafty fox,
"jump in and try it. There is more than enough for both
of us." The thirsty goat jumped into the well instantly
and began to drink. The fox quickly jumped on the goat's
back and leaped from the tip of the goat's horns out of

the well. The foolish goat now saw what a plight he had
got into, and begged the fox to help him come out.
"You would have been more cautious about finding a
way to get out again before you jumped into the well,"
said the clever fox.
Moral : Look before you leap.
3. The Ant and the Cricket
A silly young cricket spent days and nights merrily
during the warm, sunny months of summer and spring.
He did not think for future. He neither made any shelter
nor gathered any food for winter season.
On the other hand an ant worked hard made shelter
and gathered food for future also. He also suggested
the cricket to do so, but the cricket turned his deaf ear
towards it.
The winter season came by. It was extremer cold. The
ground was snow covered and trees had neither flower
nor leaf.
The cricket find neither shelter to live in nor food to eat.
He was starving. He went to the ant and begged him to
let him live in his shelter and borrowed some food to eat.
But the ant did not help him anyhow. He recalled the
cricket what he had suggested in his good time. At last,
he died of starvation and extreme cold.
Moral : Enjoy your present, but think about future also.
4. The Fox and the Crane
Once upon a time there lived a fox and a crane in a
jungle. They were good friends of each other. One day,
the fox invited the crane to dinner. The crane reached
his home to have dinner. But the crafty fox served him
soup in a flat dish. The crane could not drink the soup
as his beak was long. The crane felt insulted and had to
live hungry. But he did not let the fox know that he was
angry with fox over such attitude.
The crane wanted to take revenge in the same manner.
One day he too invited the fox to dine with him. When
the fox went to his home, he served him boiled rice in a
jug. Its neck was narrow. The fox tried to enter his head
into the jug to eat the rice but his head could not enter
the jug. And hence he could not eat the rice. The crane
ate the rice in front of him. The fox came into a rage and
asked the crane why he did so. The crane reminded the
fox how he had served him soup. The fox felt ashamed
of himself.
Moral : Tit for tat.
5. Two Wise Goats
One day a goat was crossing a narrow bridge over a
river. At the same time another goat was also crossing
the bridge from the opposite side. The bridge was so
narrow that there was not possible for them to pass
beside each other. Both of them wanted to cross the

bridge at all costs. They did not want to go back. So one
goat said to the other goat, “you should go back as you
know that I am stronger than you and I’ll beat you."
The other goat also responded in the same way. Both
of them argued for a while. Then one goat asked the
other goat,“There is no advantage in arguing with each
other. If we both fight, we will fall into the river and be
drowned. So I thought of a plan. I will lie down and you
will walk over me”. The other goat appreciated his wise
decision. One goat lay down on the bridge and the other
goat walked over him. Thus, they crossed the bridge.
Moral: Friendly nature always yields a good result.
6. Three Sons and a Bundle of Sticks
Once upon a time a man lived with his three sons in a
village. The man had grown very old. The three sons
were hard workers. But they often quarrelled with
one another. Their father was very depressed to see it.
He tried a lot to unite them but he failed. Though the
villagers appreciated their hard work and efforts, they
made fun of them on their fights.
After a few months, their father fell sick. He told his
sons to stay united, but they didn’t listen to him. So,
he decided to teach them a practical lesson so that they
would forget their differences and stay united.
One day the man called his sons. He told them, “I will
give you a bundle of sticks. Separate each stick and
you will have to break each stick into two. The one who
breaks the sticks first will be rewarded `1000.” The sons
agreed.
The old man gave sticks to each of them and asked them
to break each stick into pieces. They broke the sticks into
pieces easily and again they started to quarrel among
themselves as to who came first.
The old man said, “Dear sons, the game is not over. Now
I will give a bundle of sticks to each of you. You will
have to break the sticks as a bundle, not as separate.”
The sons agreed and tried to break the bundle of sticks
one after another. Though they tried their best, they
could not break the bundle. The old man replied, “Dear
sons, you could easily break the single stick into pieces,
but you were not able to break the bundle. Similarly, if
you stay united, nobody can do any harm to you. If you
quarrel with one another, anyone can easily defeat you.
Therefore I advise you to stay united. I have grown very
old and I often fall sick. I can breathe my last any time.
The three sons understood the power of unity and
promised their father that whatever would be the
situation, they would all stay together.
Moral : Unity is strength
7. The Great King Takes Care of his Army
Once a king named Shambhu ruled over his kingdom.

He was a great warrior who looked after his subjects
very well. All his people loved him because he was
always looking into their safety and welfare and made
sure that all his subjects led a very happy and healthy
life.
King Surendra ruled over neighbouring kingdom. King
Surendra was very lazy man who loved to spend his time
in entertaining and dancing and paid scant attention to
the needs of development activities of the people. The
King hardly came out of the palace to look into their
needs or listen to their woes. The people were fed up
with such attitude of the king.
King Virendra was more powerful king than King
Shambu and Surendra. He decided to capture these
two kingdoms.
King Shambhu somehow came to know about King
Virendra’s plan to attack his kingdom. He informed it to
his army and told him to be alert and prepared to fight
the war. Although King Shambhu’s army knew that the
enemy was more powerful, the love of their King to them
was so much that even women and children were ready
to come to the war front and fight to protect their King.
But it was not so in the kingdom of King Surendra. All
the people started fleeing to the neighbouring kingdom
leaving the King all by himself. They were not interested
to protect their King who did nothing for their welfare.
King Surendra then realized his foolishness but it was
too late by then. He was defeated in the war and fled
for his life.
King Shambhu on the other hand defeated King
Virendra with the help of his motivated army and paved
the way for his people to live in peace. King Shambhu
had the welfare of his people at heart at all times. His
subjects returned his love by being loyal and supportive
to him during testing times.
Moral : As you sow, so shall you reap.
8. Saurabh Indeed had Severe Pains
Saurabh and Bhavesh were good friends to each other.
They studied in class-VI. Both of them went to school
by bicycle. Unfortunately one day Saurabh met with an
accident. His bicycle collided with a bike. Saurabh was
badly hurt. Bhavesh informed his parents about the
accident and soon Saurabh’s parents reached the spot
and admitted him to a hospital. The next day Saurabh
was discharged from the hospital. After two days his
friend Bhavesh came to Saurabh’s home and forced him
to go to school from the next day. Saurabh still had serve
pains in his body. So he told Bhavesh that he could not

go to school for the next five days. Bhavesh complained
his parents that Saurabh had no pain in his body. He
was only pretending to have pain so that he did not have
to go to school for a few days. Saurabh got infuriated
to listen to such comments by his good friend. But his
parents allowed him to have a rest for more four days.
After a week, Saurabh got completely well and started
going to school. Sad to say one day Bhavesh also met
with an accident. His bicycle collied with a car. He was
also badly hurt. After three days Saurabh went to his
home and asked if he was able to go to school from the
next day. Bhavesh replied in negative and realised that
Saurabh must have been feeling the same pains, but he
thought that he was pretending.
Moral : He who does not suffer cannot know the feelings
of a sufferer.
9. Two Friends and the Bear
Once upon a time there lived two friends named Karan
and Kaushik in a village. They often spent their spare
time together. They always shared their joy and sorrow
with each other. They even promised that they would
remain united in any dangerous situation too.
One day when they were walking through the forests,
they saw a large bear approaching them. Karan climbed
a nearby tree without any delay leaving Kaushik in
dangerous situation. Kaushik did not know how to
climb a tree. But he knew that a bear does not touch a
dead creature. So he lay down on the ground breathless,
pretending to be a dead person.
The bear came near Kaushik and smelt his ears. The
bear took him to be a dead body and hence it left the
place. Kaushik first made sure that the bear had left
the place, then he stood up. Karan also came down and
asked him. What did the bear tell you into your ears?”
Kaushik came into a rage to see him and then replied. “It
is better to have no friend than having a selfish friends
like you.” Karan felt ashamed of his own act of leaving
Kaushik alone at the time of danger.
Moral: Do not trust a selfish man.
10. Plant Grown with Dead Seeds!
Once upon a time there lived a king who looked after his
people very well. He had grown very old. The king had
four sons. Now he was worried that which of his sons
should be his successor. It was very difficult for him to
decide on who is the most honest and efficient among
the four sons and who would be the next king.
One day a thought came to his mind. He called his sons
and said to them, “I am giving each of you one seed that

you will plant in a pot. After some time I will see that
whose plant is the best. The one who will have the most
beautiful plant will be the next king”. He gave each of
them a seed. All his sons went back and planted the
seed in the pot.
After a few months three brothers had beautiful plants
in their pots with lovely flowers and green leaves, except
the youngest one. His pot did not contain any plant
although he cared for his seed and pot very well but no
plant grew in his pot.
One day the king called all the brothers to show their
plants in their pots.
When it was the turn of his youngest son, he told his
father, “My dear father, I am really sorry, I tried my
best but no plant grew in my pot.” “It is Ok. You need
not to worry,” said the king, “because the seeds I gave to
you and your brothers were dead and useless, no plant
could be grown with those seeds. Your brothers lied to
me. When they saw their plants were not growing, they
planted other seeds in their pots. The plants they had
are from other seeds. But you are honest and told me
the truth, and one of the most important qualities of
a king is that he must be honest. So my dear son you
have proved it that you have the quality of a good king.
So today I am choosing you to be the next king.” The
three other sons felt ashamed of themselves. The King
declared the youngest son to be his successor.
Moral: Honesty is the best policy.

Sub : How to check problem of begging
Sir,
Through the column of your esteemed newspaper,
I would like to mention a few points on how the
problem of begging can be checked in our country.
Begging has grown at an alarming rate in India.
It is estimated that half a million people in India
are beggars. The government, many organization,
activists claim that many measures have been
taken to abolish begging and it has been successful
to a certain extent. But the trend of begging still
continues. We are also responsible for it. We, as
a religious frame of mind. This compels us to do
charity. And one easy way is to visit a nearby temple
and give alms to the beggars there.
All of us should make our all out efforts to stop this
menace and the best way is to stop giving alms. It
might seem that we are very heartless is not giving
money to a little child begging on the street, but his is
one step that we can take to prevent begging. If more
and more people come out and take pledge that they
are not going to give a single penny to any beggar,
irrespective of their need, beggary will certainly be
completely uprooted from our country.

3. Video Games are Good for Growing Children

Good morning honorable judges, principal, teachers
and my dear friends!
I, Sanjana, stand before you to speak for the motion
that ‘Video Games are Good for Growing Children’.
When a child plays a game such as The Incredible
Machine, Angry Birds or Cut The Rope, he trains his
brain to come up with creative ways to solve puzzles
and other problems in short bursts. In shooting
games, the character may be running and shooting at
the same time. This requires the real-world player to
keep track of the position of the character, where he/
she is heading, his speed, where the gun is aiming, if
the gunfire is hitting the enemy, and so on. All these
factors need to be taken into account, and then the
player must coordinate the brain’s interpretation
and reaction with the movement in his hands and
fingertips. This process requires a great deal of
eye-hand coordination and visual-spatial ability to be
successful. Thus children learn iconic, spatial, and
visual attention skills from video games.
Playing video games enhances the ability of quick
thinking, making fast analysis and decisions.
Sometimes the player does this almost every
second of the game giving the brain a real work
out. According to researchers at the University

of Rochester, led by Daphne Bavelier, a cognitive
scientist, games simulating stressful events such
as those found in battle or action games could be
a training tool for real-world situations. The study
suggests that playing action video games trains the
brain to make quick decisions.

I, Surbhi, stand before you to speak against the
motion that ‘Video Games are Good for Growing
Children’. Most of the bad effects of video games
are blamed on the violence they contain. Children
who play more violent video games are more likely
to have increased aggressive thoughts, feelings,
and behaviors, and decreased pro-social helping.
Playing too much video game makes children socially
isolated. Also, he may spend less time in other
activities such as doing homework, reading, sports,
and interacting with the family and friends.
Video games teach kids the wrong values. Violent
behavior, vengeance and aggression are rewarded.
Negotiating and other non-violent solutions are
often not options. Women are often portrayed as
weaker characters that are helpless.Violence and
bad behavior played in the virtual world may be
contributing to better behavior in the real world.
Persons who play violent games may feel guilty
about their behavior in the virtual world and this
may make them be more sensitive to the moral issues
they violated during game play. Games can confuse
reality and fantasy. Academic achievement may be
negatively related to over-all time spent playing
video games.

3. Abou Ben Adhem and the Angel
When Abou Ben Adhem woke up from a happy
dream, he saw an angel writing the names of those
people who loved God. Abou also went to the angel
and requested him to write down his name also. First
of all, the angel asked him if he loved God. Abou gave
his reply in negative. The angel then gold him that
he could not write his name. Abou further added
“However I don’t love God, but I love my fellowmen
vrey much. I also help the needy.”
Reluctantly the angel included his name int he list
but he wrote his name at a place and disappeared.
The angel presented the list to God. When God
saw the name of Abou written at a separate place.
He asked the angel why he had written his name
separately. The angel replied “Abou doesn’t love you
at all but he loves his fellowmen very much”. Then
God ordered the angel to put his name at the top. “As
a matter of fact, Abou loved me the most and I also
love him the most. Every creature on earth is my
child and I always went everyone to be happy except
those who hurt or harm my other children. Abou is
also doing the same work,” said God.
The next night, the angel again appeared in front
of Abou with a list of name and said to Abou, “God
loves you very much because you love your fellowmen
and the put your name at top of the list.”
Moral : One who loves and take care of others

Child Labour: A Blot on Society
Indeed child labour is a blot on our society. We
can still find a large number of people working in
hazardous industries. It is a gross violation of human
rights. If children are not dying in explosion, they are
dying in slow but sure death in the glass, brass ware,
lock, slate, balloon, brick—kiln and other industries.

 Besides, they are also engaged in the most hazardous
processes in industries which adults do not want to
touch. In the glass industry children are primarily
engaged in removing molten glass from the
furnaces. Since the furnaces are designed for adults,
the child’s face is almost touching the wall of the
furnance.
The government must take some steps to tackle the
problem of child labour.
The message needs to reach the homes of such
parents also. Parents also cannot be allowed to send
children to work in such industries on the grounds of
poverty. A massive countrywide campaign is needed
to be launched–like the campaign on the grill child-
stating clearly the punitive action which would be
taken if children were found to be employed.

Sub: Ways and means of saving water
Sir,
I have returned from a visit to Mehrauli which is
in the grip of a severe water crisis. The problem is
equally pathetic in my hometown in Rajasthan. I
have got some tips which suggest ways and means
to save water and I want it to be published through
your esteemed newspaper. Washing our hands and
face under a running tap for only two minutes wastes
about 27 litres of water whereas a half filled basin
can do this work with only 2 litres of water. While
brushing our teeth if we let the tap run for five
minutes we waste 45 litres of water but if we use a
glass of water, we consume only half a litre of water.
If we turn off the tap while soaping our body before
bathing we use only 20 litres of water, whereas if we
let it run we waste about 90 litres. We should avoid

 using bathtubs as a filled bath-tub wastes 110 litres
of water. A leaky tap must be repaired immediately
to save water.
If we understand it and decide to follow this simple

Floods are common in India. They are a natural
calamity. They occur on account of heavy rainfall.
In hilly regions, cloud-burst is also a major cause.
But whenever, it occurs, its fury devastates the life
of the people. It also causes huge loss to property
and animals. Standing crops in the fields are washed
away by the swift currents of flood water.
The fury of flash floods causes more destruction than
normal floods. It is because people are not aware
of its occurrence. There is no prediction, hence, no
precaution. The way the state of Uttrakhand got
devastated is enough to show how people become
helpless in the hands of the fury of flash floods.
Hundreds of people were washed away in the rushing
water. Thousands of them got dislocated. Hotels and
buildings got collapsed in seconds.
Such natural calamities shake the lives of the people.
4. There was a lion. One day he was very hungry
and went out in search of animals. Soon he saw
a hare playing under a tree. The lion’s mouth was
watered. “The hare will be a nice meal”, he said to
himself and hurriedly went towards it. The hare
began to run in fear but was soon caught. The

make it his nice meal. Just then he saw a deer.

the deer. The deer ran faster than the lion and
disappeared somewhere in the dense forest. The
lion realised his mistake. He should not let the
hare off because it was in his grip.

1. (a) This is the picture of the Red Fort located in Delhi.
It was the main residence of the emperors
of the Mughal dynasty for nearly 200 years, until
1857. It was constructed in 1639 by the fifth
Mughal Emperor of Shah Jahan as the place of
his forfeited capital Shahjahanabad. The Red
Fort is the name of its massive enclosing walls
of red sandstone and is adjacent to the older
Salimgarh Fort, built by Islam Shah Suri in
1546. The imperial apartments consist of raw
pavilions, connected by a water channel known

 as the Stream of Paradise (Nahr-i-Bihisht).
The fort complex is considered to represent
the zenith of Mughal creativity under Shah
Jahan, and although the palace was planned
according to Islamic prototypes, each pavilion
contains architectural elements typical of Mughal
building that reflect a fusion of Timurid and
Persian traditions. The Ref Fort’s innovative
architectural style, including its garden design,
influenced later buildings and gardens in Delhi,
Rajasthan, Punjab, Kashmir, Braj, Rohikhand
and elsewhere.

Day of India, the Prime Minister hoists the
Indian “tricolour flag” at the main gate of the
fort and delivers his speech from its ramparts.
