Ayurvedic Herbs & Their Astrological Significance

Ayurveda, known as the “Sister Science” to yoga, is an ancient science that

is holistic in nature. Having been around for over 5,000 years, the main
focus of Ayurveda is to focus on your life in-between the emotional and
physical self. One of the main beliefs is that the food we eat affects our
overall wellbeing, and can make us elated or miserable. Essentially, we can
be full of energy and vitality, or lethargic and run-down based on what we
put into our bodies. Historically, the main classical Ayurveda texts begin
with accounts of the transmission of medical knowledge from the Gods to
sages, and then to human physicians. In Sushruta Samhita (Sushruta's
Compendium), Sushruta wrote that Dhanvantari, Hindu god of Ayurveda,
incarnated himself as a king of Varanasi and taught medicine to a group of
physicians, including Sushruta. Ayurveda therapies have varied and
evolved over more than two millennia. Therapies are typically based on
complex HERBAL compounds, minerals and metal substances (sometimes
gems). In fact, Pt. Ankur Gautam, has identified some potent herbs after
finding their substantial effect on human lives. These herbs are not only
effective in annihilating the illnesses, but are also efficacious in mitigating
the bad effects of planets on human lives. Thus, healing holistically and the
signs of healing being done can also be seen on the palms (hastrekha) of
individuals.

Ginger :-

Ginger is a flowering plant that originated from China.

It belongs to the Zingiberaceae family, and is closely related to turmeric,

cardomon and galangal. It is another herb which pacifies Sun, according to
astrology.

The rhizome (underground part of the stem) is the part commonly used as
a spice. It is often called ginger root, or simply ginger.

Ginger has a very long history of use in various forms of

traditional/alternative medicine. It has been used to help digestion, reduce
nausea and help fight the flu and common cold, to name a few.
Ginger can be used fresh, dried, powdered, or as an oil or juice, and is
sometimes added to processed foods and cosmetics. It is a very common
ingredient in recipes.

The unique fragrance and flavor of ginger come from its natural oils, the
most important of which is gingerol.

Gingerol is the main bioactive compound in ginger, responsible for much of

its medicinal properties. It has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant
effects

Cardamom :-

Cardamom may be helpful for people with high blood pressure, that’s why it
is considered to be an effective remedy to control malefic Sun.

In one study, researchers gave three grams of cardamom powder a day to

20 adults who were newly diagnosed with high blood pressure. After 12
weeks, blood pressure levels had significantly decreased to the normal
range.

The promising results of this study may be related to the high levels of
antioxidants in cardamom. In fact, the participants’ antioxidant status had
increased by 90% by the end of the study. Antioxidants have been linked to
lower blood pressure.

Researchers also suspect that the spice may lower blood pressure due to
its diuretic effect, meaning it can promote urination to remove water that
builds up in your body, for example around your heart.
Calamus :-

It is also called as Vacha, the acorus calamus has a number of health

benefits that can be attributed to the makeup of the plant. It has a number
of antibiotic, cephalic, circulatory, memory boosting, tranquilizing
substance, anti-rheumatic, nervine, stimulant anti-spasmodic, circulatory,
and memory boosting properties.

Vacha is a herb influenced by planet - Sun & Mercury, according to

astrology. Its other health benefits include: - Cures psychological
disorders like depression, Gives relief from arthritis, gout, and rheumatism,
Hormone secretion in the body, Prevents epileptic fits, Prevents hysteric
attacks, Relieve from nervous spasms, Stimulation of blood circulation,

Cinnamon :-

Cinnamon is also called as Daalchini, It has been used as an important

ingredient to pacify the effects of Sun throughout history, dating back as
far as Ancient Egypt. It used to be rare and valuable and was regarded as
a gift fit for kings.

These days, cinnamon is cheap, available in every supermarket and found

as an ingredient in various foods and recipes.

Cinnamon is made by cutting the stems of cinnamon trees. The inner bark
is then extracted and the woody parts removed.

When it dries, it forms strips that curl into rolls, called cinnamon sticks.
These sticks can be ground to form cinnamon powder.

The distinct smell and flavor of cinnamon are due to the oily part, which is
very high in the compound cinnamaldehyde .
Scientists believe that this compound is responsible for most of cinnamon's
powerful effects on health and metabolism.

Cinnamon has been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease, the world's
most common cause of premature death.

In people with type 2 diabetes, 1 gram or about half a teaspoon of

cinnamon per day has been shown to have beneficial effects on blood
markers.

It reduces levels of total cholesterol, “bad” LDL cholesterol and

triglycerides, while “good” HDL cholesterol remains stable.

Guggulu:-

Guggul is the common name for the flowering mukul myrrh tree
(Commiphora mukul). It is a small, thorny tree that is most commonly found
in India, in the arid climates of states such as Rajasthan and Gujarat.
Guggul also refers to the resin formed from the sap of the guggul tree,
which has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over two thousand years.
Guggul is known by the Sanskrit name “Guggulu,” which means, “protects
from disease”.

Some benefits of Guggulu :-

Guggul has very subtle and penetrating qualities and because of this is
considered a yogavahi, meaning that it is often employed specifically to
carry other substances deep into the tissues. Further, its combination with
other herbs actually lends direction to its powerful detoxifying and
rejuvenating qualities. Guggul pacifies vata, pitta, and kapha, though it is
especially renowned for alleviating vata aggravations. That’s why it is seen
associated with planet Saturn.

Shilajit :-

The fascinating herbal matter known as shilajit has profound effects on the
physical body and mind including the capability of life expansion. This
thick, blackish-brown, sticky substance is made from plants and organic
matter that have been trapped by many layers of rocks over millions of
years in the areas surrounding India, China, Tibet, Nepal, Pakistan, Central
Asia and Scandinavia. The extreme variations of hot and cold weather
combined with the massive pressure from the weight of the mountains
creates the mineral rich matter to flow out of the rocks. In some areas, foot-
long scorpions will sting the rocks and the poison that is dispersed causes
the Shilajit to flow out of the rocks. There are four different types of Shilajit:
Copper (Tamra) that is blue in color, Silver (Rajat) which is white in color,
Gold (Sauvarna) that is red in color, and Iron (Lauha) which is blackish
brown in color and is the kind that is used for healing.

Shilajit was first discovered by Himalayan villagers. They would observe

large white monkeys gather and journey to the mountain tops each
summer. The monkeys were frequently seen eating a soft, black
substance that the villagers eventually realized came from the Himalaya
Mountains. The villagers then started consuming this organic matter. It
didn’t take long for them to realize its’ amazing healing powers of both
physical and mental health, as well as increased muscle and bone strength
and the potential of increased longevity. Undoubtedly, the mineral is seen
associated with planet Saturn because of its unmatched benefits & healing
abilities.

Hingashtak Churna :-

Hingvastaka is a superb remedy for Martian troubles and is potent

countermeasure for digestive disturbances that have a nervous component.
Symptoms such as bloating, flatulence, borborygmus, lower intestinal pain
& constipation are all signs of apana vayu not regulating the descent of the
digestive energy. Other signs might be frequent belching, hiccups &
indigestion. It can help people who are prone to a nervous stomach, who
eat on the move, & who have erratic digestion. Hingvastaka helps to
regulate samana vayu operating in the middle of the abdomen & this allows
apana vayu to descend easily. It can also help floral imbalances by
eradicating pathogenic bacteria such as Candida albicans, Entamoeba
histolytica & Shigella Spp. This helps to clear ama, a dirty coating on the
back of the tongue & bad breath.

Asafoetida :-

Asafoetida or hing makes for an indispensable part of the Indian cuisine,

especially in curries and dals. It is a latex gum extracted from various
species of a perennial herb known as ferula. Its distinct flavour and aroma
can transform any boring dish. Moreover, it has long been known for the
health benefits it has to offer. It has a prominent place in traditional
medicine; thanks to its carminative, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-
inflammatory, sedative and diuretic properties. Considering its therapeutic
and curative powers, asafoetida is also referred to as the Food of the Gods
and is really helpful in mitigating the bad effects of Jupiter.

Turmeric :-

Turmeric is the spice that gives curry its yellow color. It has been used in
India for thousands of years as a spice and medicinal herb. Recently,
science has started to back up what Indians have known for a long time —
it really does contain compounds with medicinal properties. These
compounds are called curcuminoids, the most important of which is
curcumin. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has
powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant.

Curcumin Is also a Natural Anti-Inflammatory Compound. It helps your

body fight foreign invaders and also has a role in repairing damage.
Because of inflammation, pathogens like bacteria could easily take over
your body and kill you. Hence, it is important to ingest anti-inflammatory
diet.

Moreover, Curcumin Boosts Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, Linked to

Improved Brain Function and a Lower Risk of Brain Diseases. Back in the
day, it was believed that neurons weren't able to divide and multiply after
early childhood. However, it’s now known that this does happen. Neurons
are capable of forming new connections, but in certain areas of the brain
they can also multiply and increase in number. One of the main drivers of
this process is brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is a type of
growth hormone that functions in your brain. Many common brain disorders
have been linked to decreased levels of this hormone, including depression
and Alzheimer's disease. Interestingly, curcumin can increase brain levels
of BDNF. By doing this, it may be effective in delaying or even reversing
many brain diseases and age-related decreases in brain function. It may
also improve memory and make you smarter, which seems logical given its
effects on BDNF levels. However, controlled studies in people are needed
to confirm this.

Due to such priceless benefits, this herb is regarded highly important in

Ayurveda. And, according to vedic astrology, it is also seen associated
with planet Jupiter.
