(Mechanical Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80
Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
?????

1. Show that for a curved radial vane, the work done per second is given by
ρaV1 [Vw1 u1 ± Vw2 u2 ]. [16]
2. (a) What are similarities? Explain dynamic similarity
(b) Define specific speed. Give its range for different turbines.
(c) Draw velocity triangles for Pelton turbine at inlet and outlet. Derive the expression for power
developed. [3+3+10]
3. Pelton wheel develops 7KW under a head of 240 metres with an overall efficiency of 83% when revolving
at a speed of 200 RPM. Find the unit discharge, unit power and unit speed. Assume a peripheral
coefficient of 0.46. If the head on the same turbine falls during summer season to 150m, find the
discharge, power and speed.
[16]
4. (a) Why is the speed of a reciprocating pump lower than that of a centrifugal pump? On what factors
does the speed of the reciprocating pump depend?
(b) Explain how the separation of flow is caused in reciprocating pumps. What preventive measures
are usually taken to reduce the same appreciably? [8+8]
5. (a) What do you mean by manometric efficiency, mechanical efficiency and overall efficiency of a
centrifugal pump.
(b) The diameters of an impeller of a centrifugal pump at inlet and outlet are
20 cm and 40 cm respectively. Determine the minimum speed for starting the pump if it works
against head of 25 m. [8+8]
6. (a) What do you understand by characteristic curves of a pump? What is the significance of the
characteristic curves.
(b) Find the number of pumps required to take water from a deep well under a total head of 89 m.
All the pumps are identical and are running at 800 r.p.m. the specific speed of each pump is
given as 25 while the rated capacity of each pump is 0.16 m3 /s. [8+8]
7. (a) The water is supplied at the rate of 3000 liters per minute from a height of
4 m to a hydraulic ram, which raises 300 liters/minute to a height of 30 m from the ram. The
length and diameter of the delivery pipe is 100 m and 70 mm respectively. Calculate the efficiency
of the hydraulic ram if the co-efficient of friction f= 0.009.
(b) The pressure intensity of water supplied to an intensifier is 20 N/cm2 while the pressure intensity
of water leaving the intensifier is 100 N/cm2 . The external diameter of the sliding cylinder is 20
cm. Find the diameter of the fixed ram of the intensifier. [10+6]
8. (a) A pipe line is 30 cm in diameter for first 1000 m. length and 15 cm diameter for next 1000
m. Find the discharge from the system for transmitting maximum power. Total pressure at the
intake 5.5 kN/m2 . Take f = 0.008 for both pipes.
(b) Determine the maximum power available at the exit of the pipe of 30 cm diameter and 3500 m
long. The head at the inlet is 500m. Take f = 0.006.
