All Questions carry equal marks
?????

1. (a) Derive the Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction from the first principle.
(b) A 100 turn coil is wound on a magnetic bobbin, the average diameter of the coil can be taken to
be 10mm. Find the emf induced in the coil when the flux density B is changed from 5mWb/m2
to 0.1 Wb/m2 in 35n Sec.
(c) Four 60W, 110V bulbs are to be operated from a 230V source. Determine the value of the
resistance connected in series with the line so that the voltage across the bulbs does not exceed
110V. [4+6+6]
2. (a) Define resonance and quality factor. Deduce the resonant frequency, band width and quality
factor for series RLC circuit.
(b) A parallel circuit consists of two branches Z1 and Z2 is connected to supply of 220V rms, 50Hz.
In branch Z1 , there is a resistance of 10Ω in series with an inductance of 0.1H, while Z2 consists
of a resistance of 10Ω in series with a 50µF capacitor. Find the total current drawn from the
supply. What is the power factor of the combination? [8+8]
3. (a) Explain the load characteristics of a series wound dc generators?
(b) Explain critical load resistance of series wound dc generators? [16]
4. (a) What is the significance of the back emf of a D.C.Motor
(b) Deduce the condition for maximum power for a D.C.Motor
(c) A 250V D.C.Shunt Motor takes 41A at full load. Resistance of Motor armature and shunt field
windings are 0.1Ω and 250Ω respectively. Find the back emf, if working as generator and supplying
41A to load at terminal voltage of 250V.
[4+6+6]
5. (a) Explain the constructors feature of transformers with neat diagram.
(b) A 25 KVA, 1−Φ transformer has 250 turns on the primary and 40 turns on the secondary winding.
The primary is connected to 1500V, 50 Hz mains. Calculate
i. primary and secondary currents on full-load
ii. Secondary emf.
iii. Maximum flux in the core. [8+8]
6. (a) Explain various power stages in 3-Φ Induction motor.
(b) A 3-Φ, slip ring induction motor, the maximum torque is 2.5 times the full-load torque and the
starting torque is 1.5 times the full-load torque. Determine the % reduction in rotor circuit
resistance to get a full-load slip of 3%(Neglect the stator impedance). [6+10]
7. (a) Compare salient pole and non salient pole type Synchronous machines
(b) The stator of a 3-phase, 16-pole Alternator has 144 slots and there are 4 conductors per slot
connected in two layers and the conductors of each phase are connected in series. If the speed of
the Alternator is 375 rpm, calculate the emf inducted per phase. Resultant flux in the air-gap is
0.05 webers per pole sinusoidally distributed. Assume the coil span as 150 degrees electrical.
[6+10]
8. (a) Give a summary of four different types of voltmeters commonly used in practice state whether
they can be used for AC or DC circuits. In one case ,give a sketch showing the construction.
