The Gospel Above All / The Plan ng and Replan ng of Churches for All People / The Sending of Missionaries to the Ends of the Earth

A Pioneer in Christian
Family Therapy
In 1994, Buddy McGohon was your director of missions, and I had
the privilege of being your moderator. The Baptist Book Store
(now called Lifeway) was in the MBA building. At the time, the
Nashville headquarters decided to multiply their “brick and
mortar” stores. In doing so, the first Lifeway came to town, located
on McGehee Road in the Bruno’s shopping center across from a
bustling Montgomery Mall (my how things have changed). This
Neal Hughes
Director of Missions action resulted in the closing of the MBA’s Baptist Bookstore and
transferring the manager to serve at the new location.
As our leadership looked at the vacated space, thoughts
from heaven began to arise in our hearts for a possible
counseling center for the River Region. Buddy
organized a task force, of which I was privileged to
participate by virtue of my office as moderator. On the
team was Dr. Kline Johnson.
Kline and Martha Johnson are fixtures to the
Montgomery community. Kline served for years at
Capitol Heights Baptist Church. As Troy State
Montgomery entered the city market, Dr. Johnson began Dr.’s Kline & Martha Johnson
to serve as the dean of their counseling department. It
was there that he met the beautiful and “full of life” Martha. Soon, their
marriage orchestrated a team that has encouraged couples for years. The
Johnsons made their church home at Eastern Hills where Kline began
teaching a Sunday School class in which he still leads today.
With Kline’s guidance with the task force, we soon began a counseling
center, housed in the old book store of the MBA. It thrived and became a
vital part of the perpetual ministries of the Montgomery Baptist
Association. In 2018, the MBA voted to name the counseling
center, The Johnson Center for Family and Pastoral Care (after their
esteemed director). For the last 24 years, Dr. Johnson has ministered
to thousands of people. These families can testify how God used this Mrs. Dinah Bundrick
“gentle giant” to rescue their marriage, help their child, or guide them back to a healthy
life. Heaven only knows the people who have moved to a better day because they dared
to walk in the private suite now known as The Johnson Center.
Life marches on for all of us and often takes its toll. Kline’s sweet Martha suffers from
the tragic disease of dementia and is now at a skilled care facility. Kline’s health has also
been challenged in these past years. This
has necessitated that Dr. Johnson, along
with his assistant, Dinah Bundrick,
announce their retirement, effective
December 31, 2019. We will host a
reception for these two saints during
MBA’s Annual Homecoming, November
4 (held from 5:15 to 6:15 in Dalraida’s
Atrium, between the sanctuary and the
missions fair). Please mark your
calendar today.
Alabama Baptist Children’s Home’s
Pathways Counseling will take over the
management of the Johnson Center,
effective January 1, 2020. The priority of
helping families and pastors still stands
strong. Thank you for your prayers as we
move forward into the new century.
Mary and I are blessed to be on mission
with each of you. I look forward to seeing
you soon at the 138th Homecoming of the
Montgomery Baptist Association of
Churches.
