ABSTRACT:

This report presents an optimization of cutting parameters and simple turning processes using
computer numerical control (CNC) machine. The work is carried out on the material EN-8 with the
objective of suggesting the experimental model in order to predict surface roughness, to select
the optimal cutting parameters, and to analyze the effects of cutting parameters on response
function. The tool used for the machining operation is a carbide tool-CNMG 120408. The cutting
parameters accounted are- cutting speed(rpm), depth of cut(mm), feed rate(mm/rev). Surface

m
roughness(Ra) according to cutting parameters were measured using talysurf, a surface
roughness measuring instrument. The response function is designed using DESIGN EXPERT
SOFTWARE by box behnken design technique. The experimental model obtained i.e regression
model is analyzed using ANOVA technique. From the experimental results and regression
analysis, this report suggested the experimental models equations, proposed the optimal cutting
parameters, and analyzed the effects of cutting parameters on surface roughness.
