6. Synopsis:
6.1 Relevance:-
Introduction
In the present billing system the distribution companies are unable to keep track
of the changing maximum demand of consumers. The consumer is facing problems like
receiving due bills for bills that have already been paid as well as poor reliability of
electricity supply and quality even if bills are paid regularly. The remedy for all these
problems is to keep track of the consumers load on timely basis, which will held to assure
accurate billing, track maximum demand and to detect threshold value. These are all the
features to be taken into account for designing an efficient energy billing system.
The present project “IoT Based Smart Energy Meter” addresses the problems faced by
both the consumers and the distribution companies. The paper mainly deals with smart
energy meter, which utilizes the features of embedded systems i.e. combination of
hardware and software in order to implement desired functionality. The paper discusses
comparison of Arduino and other controllers, and the application of GSM and Wi-Fi
modems to introduce ‘Smart’ concept. With the use of GSM modem the consumer as
well as service provider will get the used energy reading with the respective amount,
Consumers will even get notification in the form text through GSM when they are about
to reach their threshold value, that they have set. Also with the help of Wi-Fi modem the
consumer can monitor his consumed reading and can set the threshold value through
webpage.
This system enables the electricity department to read the meter readings monthly
without a person visiting each house. This can be achieved by the use of Arduino unit
that continuously monitor and records the energy meter reading in its permanent (non-
volatile) memory location. This system continuously records the reading and the live
meter reading can be displayed on webpage to the consumer on request. This system also
can be used to disconnect the power supply of the house when needed.

6.2. Present theories and practices:-

The present system only provides feedback to the customer at the end of the month.
Also the meter readings are taken manually. Consumer can know the units consumed by
seeing their electricity bill and recent app which don’t have any accuracy. Also huge
manpower is required to take the readings. There is no protection for energy meter tampering.
The consumers cannot monitor the everyday energy consumption or usage. The major
drawback of this system is the management of power consumption is difficult.

6.3. Proposed work

IOT Based Automatic Billing System

INTERNET OF THINGS
As we all know technology advancing day by day consequently many inventions
and innovations are taking place one of those is IOT (Internet of things). It is a
communication system that connects all the electrical and electronic devices together
with the main aim of exchanging data over the internet. Why should we exchange data
means earlier when we had no IOT its not possible to monitor electrical appliances in our
homes, office from more distance not only electrical
The proposed work is planned in following phases.

Phase I-Problem identification and Literature survey.

The present system only provides feedback to the customer at the end of the
month. Also the meter readings are taken manually. Consumer can know the units
consumed by seeing their electricity bill and recent app which don’t have any accuracy.
Also huge manpower is required to take the readings. There is no protection for energy
meter tampering. The consumers cannot monitor the everyday energy consumption or
usage. The major drawback of this system is the management of power consumption is
difficult.

The main drawbacks of today’s scenario are as follows:

There were instances of the defalcation of the amounts collected by bill collectors
have occurred.
There are number of instances of wrong booking of payments received from
consumers resulting in wrong bills, wrong disconnection of supply etc. causing avoidable
inconvenience to the consumer.
The preparation of defaulters list is not update as there is a time lag between the
receipt of payment and its accounting. With the result the line staff finds a number of
consumers listed in defaulters list have already paid the amounts.
The non-collection of amounts promptly not only leads to accumulation of
amounts but also creates difficulties in recovery of the amounts at a later date.

Phase II –Preparation of MATLAB Simulations

Phase III –Cost and weight optimization.

Phase IV –Examine the results

The proposed method to read the meter automatically and also if the consumer
fails to pay the electricity bill the energy supply would cut and once the bill is paid the
energy supply is reconnected. The component used in circuit is single phase electronic
watt-hour meter, MCT2E optocoupler, ESP8266 Wi-Fi module, Aurdinouno, relay and
relay drive circuit, liquid crystal display.

Advantages
• To reduce wastage of energy.
• Prevent electricity shortage during dry seasons.
• Make every customer a self-interested guardian of the power (energy) supply.
• Real time bill monitoring
• Time reduced receiving bill.

Applications
• Residential and commercial building in a public energy supply system
• Municipal corporation
• Public power sources
• mseb
• govt. Energy plant
