One Saint each week
Saint Charles Borromeo was born on October 2, 1538 in the
castle of Arona on Lake Maggiore, near Milan. At age 12, he
dedicated his life to serve the Church. He had difficulty
speaking, but despite this, he performed well and impressed
his teachers. He attended the University of Pavia and
learned Latin. On December 25, 1559, his uncle,
Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Medici, was elected
pope and named Pius IV. A month later, Pope
Pius IV appointed his nephew Charles
Borromeo as cardinal and then archbishop of
Milan in 1560. St. Charles was very concerned
about religious education; he wrote a catechism for young
people and also built schools for them. In 1561, he founded
a university in Pavia dedicated to St. Justina of Padua and
established seminars. When the bubonic plague arrived in
Milan, St. Charles went from house to house to feed the
hungry; wash the wounds of the sick and bury the dead. In
1584, at the age of 46, St. Charles suffered from fever and
died. He spent his life showing his love for God. On
November 1, 1610, Paul V canonized St. Charles Borromeo.

Un Santo cada semana
San Carlos Borromeo nació el 2 de octubre del 1538 en el castillo

194. Relationships between brothers and sisters deepen with the
passing of time, and “the bond of fraternity that forms in the
family between children, if consolidated by an educational
atmosphere of openness to others, is a great school of freedom and
peace. In the family, we learn how to live as one. Perhaps we do
not always think about this, but the family itself introduces
fraternity into the world. From this initial experience of fraternity,
nourished by affection and education at home, the style of
fraternity radiates like a promise upon the whole of society”.
195. Growing up with brothers and sisters makes for a beautiful
experience of caring for and helping one another. For “fraternity
in families is especially radiant when we see the care, the patience,
the affection that surround the little brother or sister who is frail,
sick or disabled”. It must be acknowledged that “having a brother
or a sister who loves you is a profound, precious and unique
experience”. Children do need to be patiently taught to treat one
another as brothers and sisters. This training, at times quite
demanding, is a true school of socialization. In some countries,
where it has become quite common to have only one child, the
experience of being a brother or sister is less and less common.
When it has been possible to have only one child, ways have to be
found to ensure that he or she does not grow up alone or isolated.
196. In addition to the small circle of the couple and their
children, there is the larger family, which cannot be overlooked.
Indeed, “the love between husband and wife and, in a derivative
and broader way, the love between members of the same family –
between parents and children, brothers and sisters and relatives
and members of the household – is given life and sustenance by
an unceasing inner dynamism leading the family to ever deeper
and more intense communion, which is the foundation and soul of
the community of marriage and the family”. Friends and other
families are part of this larger family, as well as communities of
families who support one another in their difficulties, their social
commitments and their faith.
197. This larger family should provide love and support to teenage
mothers, children without parents, single mothers left to raise
children, persons with disabilities needing particular affection and
closeness, young people struggling with addiction, the unmarried,
separated or widowed who are alone, and the elderly and infirm
who lack the support of their children. It should also embrace
“even those who have made shipwreck of their lives”. This wider
family can help make up for the shortcomings of parents, detect
and report possible situations in which children suffer violence
and even abuse, and provide wholesome love and family stability
in cases when parents prove incapable of this.

194. La relación entre los hermanos se profundiza con el paso del
tiempo, y « el vínculo de fraternidad que se forma en la familia entre los
hijos, si se da en un clima de educación abierto a los demás, es una gran
escuela de libertad y de paz. En la familia, entre hermanos, se aprende
la convivencia humana […] Tal vez no siempre somos conscientes de
ello, pero es precisamente la familia la que introduce la fraternidad en el
mundo. A partir de esta primera experiencia de hermandad, nutrida por
los afectos y por la educación familiar, el estilo de la fraternidad se
irradia como una promesa sobre toda la sociedad ».
195. Crecer entre hermanos brinda la hermosa experiencia de
cuidarnos, de ayudar y de ser ayudados. Por eso, « la fraternidad en la
familia resplandece de modo especial cuando vemos el cuidado, la
paciencia, el afecto con los cuales se rodea al hermanito o a la hermanita
más débiles, enfermos, o con discapacidad ». Hay que reconocer que
« tener un hermano, una hermana que te quiere, es una experiencia
fuerte, impagable, insustituible », pero hay que enseñar con paciencia a
los hijos a tratarse como hermanos. Ese aprendizaje, a veces costoso, es
una verdadera escuela de sociabilidad. En algunos países existe una
fuerte tendencia a tener un solo hijo, con lo cual la experiencia de ser
hermano comienza a ser poco común. En los casos en que no se haya
podido tener más de un hijo, habrá que encontrar las maneras de que el
niño no crezca solo o aislado.
196. Además del círculo pequeño que conforman los cónyuges y sus
hijos, está la familia grande que no puede ser ignorada. Porque
« el amor entre el hombre y la mujer en el matrimonio y, de forma
derivada y más amplia, el amor entre los miembros de la misma familia
—entre padres e hijos, entre hermanos y hermanas, entre parientes y
familiares— está animado e impulsado por un dinamismo interior e
incesante que conduce la familia a una comunión cada vez más
profunda e intensa, fundamento y alma de la comunidad conyugal y
familiar ». Allí también se integran los amigos y las familias amigas, e
incluso las comunidades de familias que se apoyan mutuamente en sus
dificultades, en su compromiso social y en su fe.
197. Esta familia grande debería integrar con mucho amor a las madres
adolescentes, a los niños sin padres, a las mujeres solas que deben llevar
adelante la educación de sus hijos, a las personas con alguna
discapacidad que requieren mucho afecto y cercanía, a los jóvenes que
luchan contra una adicción, a los solteros, separados o viudos que
sufren la soledad, a los ancianos y enfermos que no reciben el apoyo de
sus hijos, y en su seno tienen cabida « incluso los más desastrosos en las
conductas de su vida ».También puede ayudar a compensar las
fragilidades de los padres, o detectar y denunciar a tiempo posibles
situaciones de violencia o incluso de abuso sufridas por los niños,
dándoles un amor sano y una tutela familiar cuando sus padres no
pueden asegurarla.

Five life lessons on human (and divine) nature

An adult man, especially of the social rank of government workers, would not climb a tree. It was a self-
humiliating act to do. Yet, Zacchaeus' desire to see Jesus was stronger than social customs of the day.
He was hated and rejected by people. He must have been a very lonely and dejected man. Despised and
ostracized, he only retreated further. This explains why he was hiding away from the crowd. He was
never given a chance to love and be accepted. Why didn’t he go up on the terrace of one of the many
houses along the main street? Because no one would agree to host him. Nobody opened a door for him.
Here is Zacchaeus: the unclean, the sinner, refused by all. He desperately looks for Jesus because he has
heard of him. In his mind, he thought of himself as completely undeserving of Jesus' attention except
perhaps to have a glimpse of Jesus.
And he climbed the sycamore. And maybe his clothes got stained and torn…
Even though Zacchaeus was a sinner and undeserving of His attention, yet He singled him out of the
crowd. He did not try to dissociate Himself from him even though others were cynical when they saw Him reaching out to him. Jesus did
not care what they thought, since for Him, Zacchaeus too was a son of Abraham and He had come to seek out and save what was lost.
The crowd that follows the Master does not understand, criticizes him and opposes his choices and his saving work. He is the very first
willing to lose his reputation… he knows what He is talking about.
Lesson #1: Christ is the only one capable to fully overcome our attachment to fame.

Probably, it was not hard to see a grown man on the tree. Jesus not only noticed Zacchaeus but invited Himself to Zacchaeus' house. The
tradition, then and today, is to wait to be invited, but Jesus, knowing our true desires and seeing our hearts, takes the initiative and
touches our hearts with an impassionate request: I need your help, I want to share your table, I must stay at your house. We do not know
whether Zacchaeus intended to invite the Lord to his house, but overjoyed at the opportunity to do so. Am I conscious of the continuous
call of Christ for my little contribution?
A story is told of a woman who wanted peace in the world and peace in her heart, but was very frustrated. The world
seemed to be falling apart. She would read the papers and get depressed.
One day she decided to go shopping, and she went into a mall and picked a store at random. She walked in and was
surprised to see Jesus behind the counter. She knew it was Jesus because he looked just like the pictures she’d seen
on holy cards and devotional pictures. She finally got up her nerve and asked, Excuse me, are you Jesus?
I am.
Do you work here? No, I own the store.
Oh, what do you sell here?
Just about everything, Jesus said. Feel free to walk up and down the aisles, make a list, see what it is you want and
then come back and we’ll see what we can do for you.
She did just that, walked up and down the aisles. There was [for sale] peace on earth, no more war, no hunger or
poverty, peace in families, no more drugs, harmony, clean air, careful use of resources. She wrote furiously. By the
time she got back to the counter, she had a long list. Jesus took the list, skimmed through it, looked up at her and
smiled. No problem. And then he bent down behind the counter and picked out all sorts of things, stood up and laid
out the packets.
She asked, What are these?
Seed packets, Jesus said.
She said, You mean I don’t get the finished product?
No, this is a place of dreams. You come and see what it looks like, and I give you the seeds. You plant the seeds. You
go home and nurture them and help them to grow and someone else reaps the benefits.
Oh…, she said. And she left the store without buying anything.
Lesson #2: Jesus always takes the initiative. In many different ways, in diverse situations, with all kind of people,
Christ invites us to be generous. And only He alone knows what will happen with our humble response, with our
small gesture, just sowing seeds or inviting someone to dinner. But certainly a change in our hearts and in the lives
of our neighbors will take place.

Jesus did not tell Zacchaeus he needed to repent to be with Him. Because of the kindness of Jesus, he accepted Zacchaeus as he was. He
did not require Zacchaeus to change so that he could be in his presence.
This unconditional acceptance prompted a radical turn in Zacchaeus’ life and said, I will give half my possessions to the poor. If I have
taken too much from anyone, I will give back four times as much. It is amazing what happens under the shadow of kindness. Before
Christ said or did anything else, Zacchaeus repented. He accepted the truth about himself, that he was a criminal exploiter of the needy. To
make things right, he gave half of what he owned to the poor and restored four-fold what he had stolen from others. In that moment, this
despised and miserable man began to turn his life around.
Unlike what he did with the young rich man (Lk 18:18-23), Jesus did not ask Zacchaeus to sell everything and to distribute the money to
the poor. He did not reprimand him nor put any condition. He only asked to be welcomed. Zacchaeus was not admitted to the banquet of
the kingdom because he was good. He was converted when he found out that God loved him even though he was an impure, poor, small,
indeed, precisely because he was small. The discovery of this disinterested love was the light that dispelled the darkness that enveloped his
life and made him realized that only love and the grace are a source of joy.
Lesson #3: Jesus did not set himself to lecture Zacchaeus. Of course, we have to reproof and instruct (when we have
this mission) but when we feel we are accepted by someone around us, when we know that we are valued, and that
we have something to offer, our hidden generosity is awakened and a strong sense of communion and belonging is
developed in our heart. This is the education of our ecstasy.

As Zacchaeus did, we must begin our conversion now. We must respond to the grace of God whilst we have the opportunity, when we feel
that Christ is passing by, the Holy Spirit is giving us an opportunity and when our heavenly Father is forgiving us because we do not know
what we do.
Zacchaeus was diligent in initiating his conversion and therefore he was inspired to give a powerful testimony, to serve as a model for his
contemporaries and for us all.
When we are aware of Christ’s invitation to put out into the deep, to follow Him, to serve and to testify the kingdom of God, we cannot
delay any longer and wait for a better moment, when I might be healthier or with clearer ideas. It will be too late. Today, if you hear his
voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion (Heb 3: 15).
We cannot afford to wait for the last day because any day is unrepeatable. This was the confusion of Thessalonians which led Paul to write:
Please do not get excited too soon or alarmed by any prediction or rumor or any letter claiming to come from us, implying that the Day
of the Lord has already arrived. Each day is different and unique, not only “the last one”, with a new and different grace. Let us grasp the
opportunity and start living a different and generous life today and share this life with others.
Salvation did not come automatically for Zacchaeus, it was offered free of charge, but he had to welcome her into his home. Only then he
finally discovered the true joy that he was desperately looking for. It is true that love begets love: Zacchaeus, freely loved, realizes that
there are other people who need love and he remembers the poor.
The Bible does not say much about Zacchaeus’ life after his encounter with Christ. But we can hope that he retained this enthusiasm and
love for his Master until the end of his life, as we read in the Gospel: And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the
full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the prom-
ises (Heb 6: 11-12).
Lesson #4: Zacchaeus used properly the main strength and ability of businessmen: he saw a unique opportunity…
and he took it. His life is an excellent example of evangelical gratitude, which sets into motion all our energies, skills
and talents. Our response to the free gift of our salvation is to use our new-found freedom for the work of evangeliza-
tion and mercy.
Moreover, we need an especial or extraordinary event, to fully awake our best qualities. For example, if someone has
rescued us from the brink of disaster or even death, we will be forever grateful to that person and we will do any-
thing for him because of our gratitude. This is the way we are. And Zacchaeus was consistent with the gift of salva-
tion and healing he received from Christ.

The poor are not simply the materially poor. This is especially obvious in many developed countries, where the majority are poor in love,
poor in meaning and purpose. Many who are rich, educated and successful live empty, lonely and meaningless lives. Life has no meaning
when we do not have an aspiration. So many of us are like Zacchaeus. We are successful and have everything we need. But the yearning of
the soul and the hunger of the heart can only be quenched by love, the love of God and love of our neighbors.
Our father Founder asked us to reach out to the young people and to the intellectuals. These groups might seem particularly privileged,
because of their education, energy or social status, but they undoubtedly are examples of the new forms of poverty which Pope Francis
reminds us of. Old and new forms of poverty, old and new types of loneliness and lack of purpose in life.
In Jericho, Jesus is in the midst of the righteous who follow him, listening to his word and applaud him. Yet, immediately, as soon as he
sees a small one, he immediately diverts his eyes from the group of the faithful and directs his attention to the sinner. He feels an irre-
pressible need to be with the one who is isolated and despised. A poor man with lots of money.
The Eucharist we celebrate is the love and the presence of God and we must extend this love in our hearts to our brothers and sisters. Be-
cause, ultimately, only living for the kingdom of heaven can give us enthusiasm and hope beyond this world.
Lesson #5: We all are poor in one way or another, and perhaps in many ways. This is why the apostle is called to get
close to everyone without distinction.

Un hombre adulto, especialmente del rango social de los funcionarios del gobierno, no treparía a un
árbol. Fue un acto auto- humillante. Sin embargo, el deseo de Zaqueo de ver a Jesús era más fuerte que
las costumbres sociales de la época.
Era odiado y rechazado por la gente. Debía ser un hombre muy solitario y abatido. Despreciado y con-
denado al ostracismo, se retiró más y más. Esto explica por qué se escondía de la multitud. Nunca se le
dio la oportunidad de amar y de ser aceptado. ¿Por qué no subió a la terraza de una de las muchas casas
a lo largo de la calle principal? Porque nadie aceptaría recibirlo. Nadie le abrió una puerta. Ahí está Za-
queo: el impuro, el pecador, rechazado por todos. Busca desesperadamente a Cristo porque ha oído
hablar de él. En su mente, se consideraba completamente indigno de la atención de Jesús, excepto tal
vez para ser mirado por Él.
Y se subió al sicómoro. Y tal vez su ropa se manchó y se rasgó ...
Aunque Zaqueo era un pecador y no merecía su atención, sin embargo, Cristo lo distinguió entre la multitud. No se alejó de él a pesar de
que los demás se mostraron cínicos cuando lo vieron acercarse a él. A Jesús no le importaba lo que pensaran, ya que, para Él, Zaqueo tam-
bién era un hijo de Abraham y había venido a buscar y salvar lo que se había perdido.
La multitud que sigue al Maestro no le entendía, lo criticaba y se oponía a sus decisiones y su obra de salvación. Él es el primero dispuesto
a perder su reputación... sabe de lo que está hablando.
Lección # 1: Cristo es el único capaz de hacernos superar completamente nuestro apego a la fama.

Probablemente, no era difícil ver a un hombre adulto subido al árbol. Jesús no sólo miró a Zaqueo, sino que se auto-invitó a su casa. La
tradición, entonces y hoy, es esperar a ser invitado, pero Cristo, conociendo nuestros verdaderos deseos y viendo nuestros corazones, toma
la iniciativa y toca nuestros corazones con una solicitud apasionada: Necesito tu ayuda, quiero compartir tu mesa, debo quedarme en tu
casa. No sabemos si Zaqueo tenía la intención de invitar al Señor a su casa, pero se alegró de la oportunidad de hacerlo. ¿Soy consciente
del continuo llamado de Cristo a mi pequeña contribución?
Se cuenta que una mujer anhelaba la paz en el mundo y en su corazón, pero estaba muy desanimada. El mundo pa-
recía desmoronarse. Leía las noticias y se deprimía.
Un día decidió ir de compras, entró en un centro comercial y eligió una tienda. Entró y se sorprendió al ver a Jesu-
cristo detrás del mostrador. Sabía que era Jesús porque se parecía a las imágenes que había visto en tarjetas sagra-
das e imágenes devocionales. Finalmente se atrevió a preguntar: Disculpe, ¿Es usted Jesucristo?
Sí, yo soy.
¿Trabaja aquí?
No, soy el dueño de la tienda.
Ah, ya. Y qué venden?
Casi de todo, dijo Jesús. Siéntase libre de caminar por los pasillos, hacer una lista, ver qué es lo que quiere y luego
regresar y veremos qué podemos hacer por usted.
Ella empezó a caminar por los pasillos. Se vendía paz en la tierra, el fin de la guerra, del hambre de la pobreza, paz
en las familias, no más drogas, armonía, aire limpio, uso cuidadoso de los recursos. Ella hizo una lista muy completa.
Cuando regresó al mostrador, Jesús tomó la lista, la hojeó, la miró y sonrió. No hay problema. Y luego se inclinó
detrás del mostrador y recogió todo tipo de cosas, se levantó y colocó encima unos paquetes.
La mujer preguntó: ¿Qué es esto?
Paquetes de semillas, dijo Jesús.
Ella dijo: ¿Quiere decir que no me llevo el producto terminado?
Exacto; este es un lugar de sueños. Vienes, ves qué te parece, y yo te doy las semillas. Plantas las semillas. Te vas a
casa, las cuidas y los ayudas a crecer y otro cosecha los frutos.
¡Oh, vaya! ... exclamó. Y salió de la tienda sin comprar nada.
Lección # 2: Cristo siempre toma la iniciativa. De muchas maneras diferentes, en diversas situaciones, con todo tipo
de personas, Cristo nos invita a ser generosos. Y sólo Él sabe lo que sucederá con nuestra humilde respuesta, con
nuestro pequeño gesto, simplemente sembrando semillas o invitando a alguien a cenar. Pero ciertamente se produ-
cirá un cambio en nuestros corazones y en la vida de nuestro prójimo.

Cristo no le dijo a Zaqueo que tenía que arrepentirse para estar con Él. Debido a la mansedumbre de Jesús, aceptó a Zaqueo tal como era.
No requirió que Zaqueo cambiara para poder estar en su presencia.
Esta aceptación incondicional provocó un giro radical en la vida de Zaqueo y dijo: Daré la mitad de mis posesiones a los pobres. Si he co-
brado demasiado a alguien, le devolveré cuatro veces más. Es sorprendente lo que sucede al calor de la ternura. Antes de que Cristo dije-
ra o hiciera nada más, Zaqueo se arrepintió. Aceptó la verdad sobre sí mismo: que era un criminal explotador de los necesitados. Para
arreglar las cosas, dio la mitad de lo que poseía a los pobres y restauró cuatro veces lo que había robado a los demás. En ese momento, ese
hombre despreciado y miserable comenzó a cambiar su vida.
A diferencia de lo que hizo con el joven rico (Lc 18: 18-23), Cristo no pidió a Zaqueo que vendiera todo y distribuyera el dinero a los po-
bres. No le reprendió ni le puso ninguna condición. Solo pidió ser acogido. Zaqueo no fue admitido en el banquete del reino porque fuese
bueno. Se convirtió cuando descubrió que Dios lo amaba a pesar de que era impuro, pobre, pequeño, precisamente porque era pequeño. El
descubrimiento de este amor desinteresado fue la luz que disipó la oscuridad que envolvía su vida y le hizo darse cuenta de que sólo el
amor y la gracia son fuente de alegría.
Lección # 3: Jesús no se propuso dar un sermón a Zaqueo. Por supuesto, tenemos que reprender e instruir (cuando
tenemos esa misión), pero cuando sentimos que alguien nos rodea, cuando sabemos que somos valorados y que tene-
mos algo que ofrecer, nuestra generosidad oculta se despierta y se desarrolla un fuerte sentido de pertenencia y co-
munión en nuestro corazón. Esta es la educación de nuestro éxtasis.

Como hizo Zaqueo, hemos comenzar ahora nuestra conversión. Debemos responder a la gracia de Dios mientras tenemos la oportunidad,
cuando sentimos que Cristo está pasando, el Espíritu Santo nos está ofreciendo una oportunidad y cuando nuestro Padre celestial nos per-
dona porque no sabemos lo que hacemos.
Zaqueo fue diligente en iniciar su conversión y, por eso, fue inspirado para dar un sólido testimonio, para servir como modelo a sus con-
temporáneos y a todos nosotros.
Cuando nos damos cuenta de la invitación de Cristo a remar mar adentro, a seguirle, a servir y a dar testimonio del reino de Dios, no po-
demos demorarnos más, esperando un momento mejor, cuando esté más sano o con ideas más claras. Sería demasiado tarde. Si hoy escu-
chas su voz, no endurezcas tu corazón como lo hiciste en la rebelión (Heb 3:15).
No podemos permitirnos esperar hasta el último día porque cada día es irrepetible. Esta fue la confusión de los tesalonicenses que llevó a
Pablo a escribir: Por favor, no se emocionen demasiado pronto ni se alarmen ante cualquier predicción o rumor o carta como si fuera
nuestra, indicando que el Día del Señor ya ha llegado. Cada día es diferente y único, no sólo “el último”, con una gracia nueva y diferente.
Aprovechemos la oportunidad y comencemos a vivir una vida diferente y generosa hoy y compartamos esa vida con los demás.
La salvación no llegó a Zaqueo automáticamente, le fue ofrecida de forma gratuita, pero tuvo que acogerla en su hogar. Sólo entonces, por
fin, descubrió la verdadera alegría que estaba buscando desesperadamente. Es cierto que el amor engendra amor: Zaqueo, por haber sido
amado gratuitamente, se dio cuenta de que hay otras personas que necesitan amor y se acordó de los pobres.
La Biblia no dice mucho sobre la vida de Zaqueo después de su encuentro con Cristo. Pero podemos esperar que conservó ese entusiasmo
y amor por el Maestro hasta el final de su vida, como leemos en el Evangelio: Y deseamos que cada uno de ustedes siga mostrando la mis-
ma diligencia con la plena seguridad de la realización de la esperanza, que no se vuelvan perezosos, sino que imiten a quienes por la fe y
la paciencia heredaron las promesas (Heb 6: 11-12).
Lección # 4: Zaqueo utilizó adecuadamente la principal fortaleza y la habilidad de los hombres de negocios: vio una
oportunidad única ... y la aprovechó. Su vida es un excelente ejemplo de gratitud evangélica, que pone en movimien-
to todas nuestras energías, habilidades y talentos. Nuestra respuesta al don gratuito de la salvación es utilizar nues-
tra libertad recién descubierta para la obra de evangelización y misericordia.
Además, necesitamos un evento especial o extraordinario, para despertar plenamente nuestras mejores cualidades.
Por ejemplo, si alguien nos ha rescatado del borde del desastre o incluso de la muerte, estaremos siempre agradeci-
dos con esa persona y haremos cualquier cosa por él gracias a nuestra gratitud. Así somos nosotros. Y Zaqueo fue
consistente con el don de salvación y curación que recibió de Cristo.

Los pobres no son solamente los materialmente pobres. Esto es especialmente obvio en muchos países desarrollados, donde la mayoría
son pobres en amor, pobres en el sentido y el propósito de sus vidas. Muchos de los ricos, educados y exitosos viven vidas vacías, solitarias
y sin sentido. La vida no tiene sentido cuando no tenemos una aspiración. Muchos de nosotros somos como Zaqueo. Tenemos éxito y tene-
mos todo lo que necesitamos. Pero el anhelo del alma y el hambre del corazón sólo pueden ser satisfechos por el amor, el amor de Dios y el
amor a nuestro prójimo.
Nuestro padre Fundador nos pidió llegar a los jóvenes y a los intelectuales. Estos grupos pueden parecer particularmente privilegiados,
debido a su educación, energía o estatus social, pero sin duda son ejemplos de las nuevas formas de pobreza que el Papa Francisco nos
recuerda. Viejas y nuevas formas de pobreza, viejos y nuevos tipos de soledad y falta de propósito en la vida.
En Jericó, Cristo está en medio de los justos que lo siguen, escuchando su palabra y aplaudiéndole. Sin embargo, inmediatamente, tan
pronto como ve a alguien pequeño, desvía sus ojos del grupo de fieles y dirige su atención al pecador. Siente una necesidad irreprimible de
estar con el que está aislado y despreciado. Un pobre con mucho dinero.
La Eucaristía que celebramos es el amor y la presencia de Dios y debemos extender este amor en nuestros corazones a nuestros hermanos
y hermanas. Porque, en definitiva, sólo vivir para el reino de los cielos puede darnos entusiasmo y esperanza más allá de este mundo.
Lección # 5: Todos somos pobres de una forma u otra, y quizás de muchas formas. Es por eso que el apóstol está lla-
mado a acercarse a todos sin distinción.
