Would you like to visit London or Canberra?

There are many differences between London and Canberra although both of
them are capital cities. London is the capital of Britain whereas Canberra is the
capital of Australia.

Canberra is located in the south east of the

State of New South Wales on the Molonglo River,
round an artificial lake. London is located in the
south east of England, on both sides of the Thames
River. Canberra is smaller than London; it is also
less populated (300,000 inhabitants) than London
(10 million inhabitants).

London was founded 43 AD by the Romans; it

is much older than Canberra whose construction
started in 1913.
Both cities are commercial and political centres, but Canberra is less
important than London which is one of the greatest cities in the world and a big
financial place with a great number of banks, the Stock
Exchange and insurance companies, such as Lloyd’s.
London, alike Canberra are also cultural
centres with art galleries and museums. The
Australian National Gallery in Canberra is
however, not as large as the National Gallery in
London or London Museum, but St John the Baptist Church in Canberra is as
impressive as St Paul’s Cathedral in London.
In both cities there are big universities, imposing libraries and monuments set up
to celebrate heroes, such as Captain Cook Memorial in Canberra and Trafalgar
Square with the statue of Admiral Nelson in London.

or 2 things.
1- Comparatives of superiority.

a. Short adjectives are adjectives with 1 syllable or

2 syllables, ending with:
- y ( easy, pretty)
- ow (narrow)
- er (clever)
- le (gentle)

… than

eg: interesting: This book is more interesting than that

John: We haven’t got much money.
Charlie: Let’s catch a pigeon.
John: A pigeon! Why not a duck? A duck tastes
better than a pigeon and there are lots of
ducks in Hyde Park.
Kathy: Stealing a duck in Hyde Park is as criminal as
killing.

John: Who do the ducks belong to?

Charlie: Everybody. I think stealing a duck that
belongs to everybody is worse than stealing
from a shop. Come on. Let’s go to a supermarket.
John: Look, there are dozens of ducks down there.
Charlie, come down to the edge of the water.
Shh! Less noise! I want to catch one!
Charlie: How are we going to catch it?
John: Give me your jacket.
Charlie: What?
John: Your jacket. It is bigger than mine. I’m going to throw it over one of the
ducks.
Charlie: What about that duck there?
John: No, it’s not as fat as the other one.
Charlie: But it looks younger. That fat one will be less tender.
Kathy: Here comes a policeman. Let’s go before he realizes we are trying to
catch a duck.

New York City is the largest city in the USA and the fourth largest in the
world. It has a population of nearly 8 million inhabitants. It is one of the world’s
most important centres of business and culture. It is also the home of the United
Nations. Here are some of the most exciting places which you can visit:
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is the largest art museum in the Western
hemisphere, has works of art from all over the world.
Greenwich Village, west of Broadway, is one of the oldest parts of New York.
It has beautiful old houses.
Washington Square is a famous meeting place where people come to walk, to talk or to
listen to street concerts.
The Empire State Building, at Fifth Avenue and 34th Street, has 102 floors. It
is higher than the Statue of Liberty, another symbol of the USA. This statue is on
Liberty Island, south of Manhattan.
Chinatown’s narrow streets, old buildings, shops and restaurants have been the
centre of New York’s Chinese Community for more than 150 years. It is a
fascinating place where people speak their native language and keep many of their
customs. In Chinatown, signs, newspapers and books are in Chinese. There are
markets where you can find all kinds of Chinese food, and of course, there are
hundreds of Chinese restaurants.
Nearby is Little Italy. You can visit interesting stores and markets but, Chinatown is

T. Shirt History

John Wesley Hanes was the first person to manufacture T-shirts in 1901, in North
Carolina. He was inspired by a shirt that black cotton workers wore. He called it a T-
shirt because it has the form of a “T”. T-shirts became very popular in the U.S.A , as
underwear at first. The army bought them and when American soldiers, or G.I.s, went
to the Second World War, T-shirts were part of their uniform. Civilians in many
countries loved them, so the G.I.s gave them away. Then two teenage film stars,
Marlon Brando and James Dean, made them very famous.
