Choose a topic area and question to investigate that you find interesting. For
example, a topic such as 'views on the use of mobile phones in education settings'
would be quite acceptable and likely to provoke reflection on issues in
interviewing.

Having settled on a topic area, develop an interview schedule (including probes and
prompts) that you could use to explore this topic. Consider each of the following
questions in turn, and write a blog post outlining your ideas:

What topic, area, or question would you seek to investigate?

Who you would want to interview in order to find out about your chosen topic?
How you would conduct the interview(s)?
What you would do with the data (in terms of storage and transcribing)?
How would you handle matters concerning gaining informed consent and
confidentiality?
What ethical considerations specific to your topic/question would need to be
addressed?

Activity 2: test your interview schedule

Marcar esta página
Note: this activity follows directly from activity 1. Find a willing volunteer or
two (friends, colleagues, or peers on the course), and interview them using your
schedule. If you'd like to try out your schedule with another participant on this
course, post a request in the forum, or on Twitter.

You might conduct your interview using a synchronous text chat service, such as
Skype text chat for example, so that you have a transcript of the interview. Make
some notes after the interview, following the questions below (you can share these
in your blog if you're comfortable doing so, but bear in mind any privacy concerns
around sharing these publicly):

What went well in the interview?

What questions seemed less clear, or less easy to ask, than you'd expected? How
could you improve them?
Did you change the order of questions, or add in additional questions, in ways that
you might want to take account of in your schedule?
Was your own participation in the interview as you would want it? Did you
contribute enough/too much/too little?
