1. A train passes a station 120 m long in 60 sec. at a speed of 72 km/hr. the time taken by the train to pass an
electric perch is:

Answer:

Given that:

Speed of the train = (72 * 5/18) m / sec = 20 m/sec.

Let the length of the train be x meters.

Then,(x + 120)/20 = 60 ⇒ x + 120 = 1200 ⇒ x = 1080.

So, time taken by the train to pass an electric perch = 1080 x 1/20 sec = 54 sec.

2. Two trains running in opposite directions cross a man standing on the platform in 27 seconds and 17 seconds
respectively and they cross each other in 23 seconds. The ratio of their speeds is:

Answer:

Let the speeds of the two trains be x m/sec and y m/sec respectively.

Then length of the first train = 27x meters,

And length of the second train = 17y meters.

=> 27x + 17y = 23 x + y

=> 27x + 17y = 23x + 23y

4x = 6y

x : y = 3: 2

3. Two trains travel in opposite directions at 36 kmph and 45 kmph and a man sitting in slower train passes the
faster train in 8 seconds. Then length of the faster train is:

Answer:

Relative Speed = (36 + 45) km/hr = 81 * 5/18 m0sec = 45/2 m/sec

Length of train = 45/2 x 8 m =180 m.

4. A train passes a platform in 40 sec and a woman standing on the platform in 30 sec. If the speed of the train is 108
km/hr, what is the length of the platform?

Answer:

Speed of the train = 108 x 5/18 = 30 m/sec.

Length of the train = Distance travelled to cross the woman × Time taken = (30×30) m = 900 m.

Let the length of the platform be x meters.

Then, (x + 900)/40 = 30 => x + 900 = 1200 => x = 300m

5. A man sitting in a train which is traveling at 50 kmph observes that a goods train, traveling in opposite directions,
takes 9 seconds to pass him. If the goods train is 280 m long, find its speed?

Answer:

Page 1
Mentor for Bank Exams PROBLEMS ON TRAINS Like my Facebook Page
Relative speed = 280/9 m/sec = 280/9 x 18/5 kmph = 112 kmph

Speed of goods train = (112 – 50) kmph = 62 kmph.

6. Two trains of equal lengths take 10 seconds and 15 seconds respectively to cross a telegraph post. If the length of
each train be 120 meters, in what time (in seconds) will they cross each other travelling in opposite direction?

Answer:

Speed of the first train = 120/10 m/sec = 12 m/sec.

Speed of the second train = 120/15 m/sec = 8 m/sec.

Relative speed = (12+8) = m/sec = 20 m/sec.

∴ Required time = (120+120)/20 sec = 12 sec.

7. A 240 meter long train passes a platform in 45 sec while it passes a signal board in 16 sec. What is the length of
the platform?

Answer:

From the information given:

Speed of the train = (Distance travelled to cross the signal/Time taken) = 240/16 m/sec = 15 m/sec

Let length of the platform be x meters.

Then, (x + 240)/45 = 15 => x + 240 = 675 => x = 435m

8. A train crosses a telegraph post in 10 seconds. if the speed of train is 72 km/hr then find the length of train?

Answer:

Speed of train is 72 km/hr

or speed = 72 × (5/18) = 20 m/s

Length of train = 20 × 10 = 200 meter

9. Two trains are running in opposite directions with the same speed. If the length of each train is 120 meters and
they cross each other in 12 seconds, then the speed of each train (in km/hr) is

Answer:

Let the speed of each train be x m/sec.

Then, relative speed of the two trains = 2x m/sec.

So, 2x = (120 + 120) / 12 ⇒ 2x = 20 ⇔ x = 10.

∴ Speed of each train = 10 m / sec = 10 x 18/5 km/hr = 36 km/hr.

10. A train moves past a terminal in 20 sec and a station 300 m long in 50 sec its length is:

Answer:

Let the length of train be x meters and its speed be y m/sec.

Then, x/y = 20 ⇒ y = x/20

Page 2

Now, as in both the cases speed is equal; so,

11. A train , 800 meter long is running with a speed of 78 km/hr. It crosses a tunnel in 1 minute. What is the length
of the tunnel (in meters)?

Answer:

Distance = 800 + x meter where x is the length of the tunnel

Time = 1 minute = 60 seconds

Speed = 78 km/hr = m/s = 130/6 = 65/3 m/s

Speed = Distance/Time = (800 + x)/60 = 65/3

⇒ 800 + x = 20 × 65 = 1300

⇒ x = 1300 – 800 = 500 meter

12. A train overtakes two persons walking along a railway track. The first person walks at 4.5 km/hr and the other
walks at 5.4 km/hr. The train needs 8.4 and 8.5 seconds respectively to overtake them. What is the speed of the
train if both the persons are walking in the same direction as the train?

Answer:

Let x is the length of the train in meter and y is its speed in kmph

Dividing 1 by 2

⇒ 8.4y – 8.4 × 4.5 = 8.5y – 8.5 × 5.4

.1y = 8.5 × 5.4 – 8.4 × 4.5

⇒ .1y = 45.9 – 37.8 = 8.1

⇒ y = 81 km/hr

13. A train overtakes two persons who are walking in the same direction to that of the train at 2 kmph and 4 kmph
and passes them completely in 9 and 10 seconds respectively. What is the length of the train?

Answer:

Let x is the length of the train in meter and v is its speed in kmph

Dividing equation 1 with equation 2

⇒ 10v – 40 = 9v – 18

⇒ v = 22

Substituting in equation 1,

14. A train runs at the speed of 108 kmph and crosses a 450 m long platform in 26 seconds. What is the length of the
train?

Answer:

Speed = 108 kmph = 108 x 10/36 = 30 m/s

Distance covered = 450 + x where x is the length of the train

Time = 26 s

450 + x = 26 × 30 = 780 m

x = 780 – 450 = 330 m

15. A train having a length of ¼ mile, is traveling at a speed of 75 mph. It enters a tunnel 3 ½ miles long. How long
does it take the train to pass through the tunnel from the moment the front enters to the moment the rear
emerges?

Answer:

Total distance =3 ½ + ¼ = 15/4 miles

Speed = 75 mph

Time = Distance/Speed = [(15/4)]/75 hr = 1/20hr = 60/20 minutes = 3 minutes

16. A jogger is running at 9 kmph alongside a railway track in 240 meters ahead of the engine of a 120 meters long
train. The train is running at 45 kmph in the same direction. How much time does it take for the train to pass the
jogger?

Page 4
Mentor for Bank Exams PROBLEMS ON TRAINS Like my Facebook Page
Answer:

Distance to be covered = 240 + 120 = 360 m

Relative speed = 36 km/hr = 36 × 1000/3600 = 10m/s

Time = distance/speed = 360/10 = 36 seconds.

17. A 270 meters long train running at the speed of 120 kmph crosses another train running in opposite direction at
the speed of 80 kmph in 9 seconds. What is the length of the other train?

Answer:

Relative speed = (120 + 80) km/hr

Let the length of the other train be x meters. Then,

(270 + x)/9 = 500/9 ⇔ x = 230 meter

18. A train moves past a police post and a flyover 420 m long in 9 sec and 30 sec respectively. What is the speed of
the train?

Answer:

Let the length of the train be x meters and its speed by y m/sec.

Then, x/y = 9 ⇔ x = 9y.

Now, (x + 420)/30 = y

⇔ 30y = x +420

⇒ 30y = 9y +420

⇒ 21y = 420 ⇒ y = 20

Speed = 20 m/sec = 20 x 18/5 = 72 km/hr

19. A train is traveling at 48 kmph. It crosses another train having half of its length traveling in opposite direction at
42 kmph, in 12 seconds. It also passes a railway platform in 45 seconds. What is the length of the platform?

Answer:

Speed of train 1 = 48 kmph

Let the length of train 1 = 2x meter

Speed of train 2 = 42 kmph

Le gth of t ai =x ete e ause it is half of t ai ’s le gth

Distance = 2x + x = 3x

Relative speed = 48 + 42 = 90 kmph = 90 × 10/36 = 25 m/s

Time = 12s

Page 5
Mentor for Bank Exams PROBLEMS ON TRAINS Like my Facebook Page
Distance/time = speed => 3x/12 = 25

⇒ x = 25 ×12/3 = 100 meter

length of the first train = 2x = 200 meter

Time taken to cross the platform = 45 s

Speed of train 1 = 48 kmph = 480/36 = 40/3 m/s

Distance = 200 + y where y is the length of the platform = 200 + y = 45 × 40/3 = 600 => y = 400 meters.

20. Two trains of equal length are running on parallel lines in the same direction at 46 km/hr and 36 km/hr. the
faster train passes the slower train in 36 seconds. The length of the each train is:

Answer:

Let the length of each train be x meters.

Then, distance covered = 2x metres.

Relative speed = (46 – 36) km/hr = 10 x 5/18 m/sec = 25/9 m/sec

21. A train takes 16 sec to pass through a station 140 m long and 14 sec to pass through another station 100 m long.
The length of the train is:

Answer:

Let the length of the train be x meters.

Now, as in both the cases the speed of the train is same. So,

22. Two stations P and Q are 110 km apart on a straight track. One train starts from P at 7 a.m. and travels towards
Q at 20 kmph. Another train starts from Q at 8 a.m. and travels towards P at a speed of 25 kmph. At what time will
they meet?

Answer:

Assume both train meet after x hours after 7 am

Distance covered by train starting from P in x hours = 20x km

Distance covered by train starting from Q in (x – 1) hours = 25 (x – 1)

Total distance = 110 = 20x + 25(x – 1) => 110 = 45x => 135 = x = 3

Means they meet after 3 hours after 7 am, i.e. they meet at 10 am.

23. A train 125 m long passes a man, running at 5 kmph in the same direction in which the train is going, in 10
seconds. The speed of the train is:

Answer:

Speed of the train relative to man = 125/10 = 25/2 m/sec = 25/2 x 18/5 km/hr = 45 km/hr.

Let the speed of the train be x kmph. Then relative speed = (x – 5) = 45 kmph

so the speed of train is 45 + 5 = 50 kmph

24. How many seconds will a 1050 meter long train take to cross a girl walking with a speed of 4 km/hr in the
direction of the moving train if the speed of the train is 58 km/hr?

Answer:

Speed of train relative to the girl = (58 – 4) = 54 km/hr

⇒ 54 x 5/18 m/sec ⇒ 15 m/sec.

So, time taken to pass the girl = 1050 x 1/15 = 70 sec.

25. A train having a length of 110 meter is running at a speed of 60 kmph. In what time, it will pass a man who is
running at 6 kmph in the direction opposite to that of the train

Answer:

Distance = 110 m

Relative speed = 60 + 6 = 66 kmph (Since both the train and the man are in moving in opposite direction) = 66
× 10/36m/sec = 110/6.

Time = distance/speed = 110/(110/6) = 6 seconds

26. Two trains, one from P to Q and the other from Q to P, start simultaneously. After they meet, the trains reach
their destinations after 4 hours and 9 hours respectively. The ratio of their speeds is?

Answer:

Ratio of their speeds = Speed of first train : Speed of second train

=3:2

27. A train moves past a post and a platform 264 m long in 8 seconds and 20 seconds respectively. What is the speed
of the train?

Answer:

Let x is the length of the train and v is the speed

Time taken to move the post = 8 seconds

⇒ x/v ⇒ x = 8v --- (1)

Time taken to cross the platform 264 m long = 20 s

(x + 264)/v = 20

Page 7
Mentor for Bank Exams PROBLEMS ON TRAINS Like my Facebook Page
⇒ x + 264 = 20v ---(2)

Substituting equation 1 in equation 2, we get

8v + 264 = 20v

⇒ v = 264/12 = 22 m/s = 22 x 36/10 km/hr = 79.2 km/hr

28. A train passes a platform in 36 seconds. The same train passes a man standing on the platform in 20 seconds. If
the speed of the train is 54 km/hr, The length of the platform is?

Answer:

Speed of the train = 54 km/hr = (54 x 10)/36 m/s = 15 m/s

Length of the train = speed × time taken to cross the man = 15 × 20 = 300 m

Let the length of the platform = L

Time taken to cross the platform = (300 + L)/15

⇒ (300 + L)/15 = 36 ⇒ 300 + L = 15 × 36 = 540 ⇒ L = 540 – 300 = 240 meter

29. A train 360 m long runs with a speed of 45 km/hr. What time will it take to pass a platform of 140 m long?

Answer:

Speed = 45 km/hr = 45 x 10/36 m/s = 150/12 = 50/4 = 25/2 m/s

Total distance = length of the train + length of the platform = 360 + 140 = 500 meter

Time taken to cross the platform = [500/(25/2)] = 500 x 2/25 = 40 seconds

30. A train has a length of 150 meters. It is passing a man who is moving at 2 km/hr in the same direction of the
train, in 3 seconds. Find out the speed of the train?

Answer:

Length of the train l = 150 m

Speed of the man = 2 km/hr

Relative speed = total distance/time = 150/3 m/s = 150/3 × 18/5 = 180 km/hr

Relative Speed = Speed of train - Speed of man (As both are moving in the same direction)

⇒ 180 = speed of train – 2

⇒ speed of train = 180 + 2 = 182 km/hr

31. A train X speeding with 120 kmph crosses another train Y, running in the same direction, in 2 minutes. If the
lengths of the train X and Y be 100 m and 200 m respectively, what is the speed of train Y?

Answer:

Let the speed of train Y be x km/hr.

Speed of X relative to Y = (120 – x) km/hr =

Page 8

300/[(600 – 5x)/18] = 120 ⇔ 5400 = 120 (600-5x) ⇔ x = 111.

32. Two trains travel in opposite directions at 36 kmph and 45 kmph and a man sitting in slower train passes the
faster train in 8 seconds. The length of the faster train is :

Answer:

Relative speed = (36 + 45) km/hr = 81 x 5/18 m/sec = 45/2 m/sec

Length of train = 45/2 x 8 m = 180 m.

33. Two trains, each 100 m long, moving in opposite directions, cross each other in 8 seconds. If one is moving twice
as fast the other, then the speed of the faster train is:

Answer:

Let the speed of the slower train be x m/sec.

Then, speed of the faster train = 2x m/sec.

Relative speed = (x + 2x) m/sec = 3x m /sec.

∴ (100 + 100)/8 = 3x

⇔ 24x = 200

⇔ x =25/3

So, speed of the faster train = 50/3 m/sec = 50/3 x 18/5 km/hr = 60 km/hr.

34. Two trains running in opposite directions cross a man standing on the platform in 27 seconds and 17 seconds
respectively and they cross each other in 23 seconds. The ratio of their speeds is:

Answer:

Let the speeds of the two trains be x m/sec and y m/sec respectively. Then, length of the first train = 27x metres, and
length of the second train = 17 y metres.

∴ (27x + 17y)/(x + y) = 23

⇔ 27x + 17y = 23x +23y

⇔4x = 6y

⇔x/y = 3/2

35. Two trains, one from A to B and the other from B to A, start simultaneously. After they meet the trains reach
their destinations after 9 hours and 16 hours respectively. The ratio of their speeds is:

Answer:

Let us name the train as A and B. then, A’s speed : B’s speed =

36. Two trains start at same time from two stations and proceed towards each other at the rate of 20 km/hr and 25
km/hr respectively. When they meet, it is found that one train has traveled 60 km more than the other. What is the
distance between the two stations?

Answer:

Let us assume that trains meet after 'x' hours

Distance = speed * Time

Distance traveled by two trains = 20x km and 25x km resp.

As one train travels 60 km more than the other,

25x – 20x = 60

5x = 60

x = 12 hours

As the two trains are moving towards each other, relative speed = 20 + 25 = 45 km/hr

Therefore, total distance = 45*12 = 540 km.

37. Two trains of lengths 156.62 and 100 meters are running on parallel lines with respective speeds of 30 km/hr
and 36 km/hr. The time of crossing each other, if they run in the opposite direction is __________ .

Answer:

Total distance to be covered = 156.62 + 100 = 256.62 m

Trains are running in opposite directions, hence

Relative speed = 30 + 36 = 66 km/hr = 18.33 m/sec

Time = Distance / Relative Speed

= 256.62 /18.33 sec

= 14 sec

Therefore, the time of crossing each other in the opposite direction is 14 seconds.

38. Two trains are traveling in the same direction at speeds of 50 kmph and 20 kmph respectively If the faster train
passes the driver in the slower train in 20 seconds, What is the length of the faster train?

Answer:

Given :

Speed of fast train = 50 kmph.

Speed of slow train = 20 kmph.

The driver in the slower train is moving with the speed of the slower train which is 20 kmph.

The faster train will pass the driver when it has gained a distance. Distance gained by faster train

in 1 hour = (50 – 20) = 30 km

Page 10
Mentor for Bank Exams PROBLEMS ON TRAINS Like my Facebook Page
= 8.33 m/sec

Distance gained by faster train in 20 sec = 20 * 8.33 = 166.6 m.

Therefore, Length of faster train = 166.6 m.

39. A boy sitting in a train counts the electricity poles along the line as he passes them. If they are 40 m apart and
the speed of the train is 48 km/h, how many poles does he pass per minute ?

Answer:

Speed of train = 48 km/h = (48 * 1000)/60 m/minute = 800 m/minute

Thus we have to find the number of poles situated along a distance of 800 with each pole at a distance of 40 m from
each other.

|--------40 m-------|--------40 m ---------|

Consider a distance of 80 m. There are 3 poles situated along this distance as shown.

Thus number of poles = 80/40 + 1 = 2 + 1 = 3

Similarly along a distance of 900 m, number of poles situated = 800/40 + 1 = 21

40. How long does a train 90 metres long running at the speed of 71 km/hr take to cross a bridge 132 metres in
length?

Answer:

Speed = (71 x 5/18) m/sec = 19.72 m/sec

Total distance covered = (90 + 132) m = 222 m.

Required time = (222/19.72) sec = 11.26 sec

41. A train travels a certain distance by taking 3 stops of 20 minutes each. Considering the period of stoppage, the
overall speed of the train comes to 40 kmph; while without consideration of stoppage, it is 60 kmph. How much
distance must the train have travelled ?

Answer:

Let the ti e take to t a el the dista e ithout taki g stops e hou s.

Thus, we get,

60 x b = 40(b + 1)

b=2

Thus, we get 60 x 2 = 120 kms

42. A train takes 20 seconds to pass completely through a station 160 m long and 15 seconds through another
station 110 m long. Find the length of the train.

Answer:

Let the length of the train be x meters.

Therefore (x + 160)/20 = (x + 110)/15 = 15(x + 160) = 20(x+110) => x = 40 m

43. Two trains 140 metres and 120 metres are running in the same direction with speeds 40 kmph and 60 kmph
respectively. In what time will the faster train pass the slower one?

Answer:

Total distance = addition of length of the two trains = 140 + 120 = 260 metres

As the two trains are travelling in the same direction, their relative speed is:

v = | v1 – v2 | = | 40 – 60 | = 20 km/hr = 20*1000/60 = 1000/3 metres/min

t = 260/ 1000*3

t = 0.78 minutes

44. Two trains each of which is 100 m long moving in opposite direction to one another cross each other taking 8
seconds. If speed of one train is twice the speed of other train find the speed of the faster train.

Answer:

Let the speed of the slower train be x m/sec.

Then, speed of the faster train = 2x m/sec.

Relative speed = (x + 2x) m/sec = 3x m/sec.

Therefore, (100 + 100)/8 = 3x => 24x = 200 => x = 25/3

So, speed of the faster train = 50/3m/sec = 50/3 x 18/5 = 60 km/hr.

45. A train runs across a post in 15 seconds and across a platform of length 100m in 25 seconds. Determine the
length of this train:

Answer:

Let us assume for this question that the length of train is x metres and it is assumed to be running at the speed of y
m/sec.

A pole is assumed as a point object.

=>Time taken by the train to pass the pole= x/y

=>15=x/y

=>y=x/15

Now, the train passes the platform which is 100 m in length in 25 seconds.

=>x+100/y=25

=>x+100/25=y

Equating speed generated from both cases:

x+100/25=x/15

Therefore x = 150 metres.

46. A man walks with 3kmph speed in the direction of a train. How much time will a 500m long train take to
overtake him at a speed of 63kmph?

Page 12
Mentor for Bank Exams PROBLEMS ON TRAINS Like my Facebook Page
Answer:

Distance to be covered = 500 metres

Effective speed will be equal to difference in the speed of ma and train as they move in opposite directions.

Thus, effective speed = 63kmph-3kmph= 60kmph.

60kmph is equal to 50/3 m/s.

Time = Distance/ Speed

Thus, time taken will be equal to 500/(50/3).

On solving, time = 30 seconds.

Therefore, the train will take 30 seconds to overtake the man.

47. Two trains are moving in opposite directions at 60 km/hr and 90 km/hr. Their lengths are 1.10 km and 0.9 km
respectively. The time taken by the slower train to cross the faster train in seconds is:

Answer:

Relative speed = all lengths/time

[60+90] = [1.10 +0.9 ]/time [ PLUS when opposite direction] time=2/150 = 1/75 h

1 hour______3600 sec

1/75 hr______?

?= 3600/75=48 sec

48. Two, trains, one from Howrah to Patna and the other from Patna to Howrah, start simultaneously. After they
meet, the trains reach their destinations after 9 hours and 16 hours respectively. The ratio of their speeds is:

Answer:

Let us name the trains as A and B. Then,

trick formula

A’s speed : B’s speed = s ua e oot of : s ua e-root of a =square-root of 16 : square-root of 9 = 4 : 3.

49. A train overtakes two persons walking along a railway track. The first one walks at 4.5 km/hr. The other one
walks at 5.4 km/hr. The train needs 8.4 and 8.5 seconds respectively to overtake them. What is the speed of the
train if both the persons are walking in the same direction as the train?

Answer:

4.5 km/hr =(4.5 x 5/18)m/sec =5m/4sec = 1.25 m/sec, and

5.4 km/hr =(5.4 x 5/18)m/sec =3m/2sec = 1.5 m/sec.

Let the speed of the train be x m/sec.

Then, (x – 1.25) x 8.4 = (x – 1.5) x 8.5

=> 8.4x – 10.5 = 8.5x – 12.75 => 0.1x = 2.25 => x = 22.5

Therefore Speed of the train =(22.5 x18 /5)km/hr = 81 km/hr.

50. A train Express A leaves Delhi at 5 a.m and reaches Mumbai at 9 a.m.Another train Express B leaves Mumbai at 7
a.m and reaches Delhi at 10.30 a.m.At what time do they cross each other after 7 a.m ?

Answer:

Speed of Express A = x/4kmph

Speed of Express B = 2x/7kmph =>(t=3.30 = 3(1/2) = 7/2)

Trains will meet T hours after 7 a.m

(x/4)(y+2) + (2x/7)y = x

(y+2)/4 + (2y/7) = 1

(7y+14+8y)/28 = 1

15y = 28-14

Y =(14/15)×60 = 56 min
