Learning Together at Home

● Parents can point out different tools they use around the house, and let their child help
use them.
● Parents can point out different furniture or items that are made out of wood.
● Parents can label the different elements of roads as they are driving like bridges, tunnels,
or ramps.

Early Childhood Fundamentals

Playing with Music at Home

“A common misconception is that young children just naturally learn how to run, throw, and catch with
competence. However, as with many other skills, young children must learn and practice these skills until
they can proficiently participate in a variety of games and sports. Some children seem to have an innate talent
in this area. Howard Gardner, in his theory of multiple intelligences, which outlines eight different types of
intelligence including bodily kinesthetic intelligence, refers to these children as “body smart.” Children with a
talent for motor skills develop these skills without much assistance from adults, but the majority of children
do not. Motor development delays tend to be common among children from low-income and urban families
with limited resources who live in areas with few places to be active. One way to conceptualize motor skill
development in early childhood has been to look at developmental sequences of fundamental motor skills.
For instance, there are five stages to throwing, five stages to catching, four to running, and three to skipping.

This Week’s Activities

Free Play Activities (Activities inside may change based on available resources and child need):
Gross Motor: Swing Toddlers will have the opportunity to use their gross motor skills to get in and out of the swing with assistance. They will also have
the opportunity for peer interaction, as there are two seats in the swing.

Dramatic Play: Fishing Toddlers will have the opportunity to go fishing out of boats as they interact with their peers.

Flop and Drop: Music Toddlers will have the opportunity to explore different musical instruments like tambourines. They will also have the opportunity
to look at music themed books, or request to have a book read to them.

Blocks: Construction Zone Toddlers will have the opportunity to dress like construction workers as they work on their gross motor skills as they stack
cardboard blocks and knock them over.

Large Group Activity:

Shake Your Sillies Out- Toddlers will get to shake their sillies out as they listen and follow simple dancing steps with egg shakers.

Outdoor Activities – Large Playground (Activities outside may be changed based on the weather conditions of the playground):
Sand Kitchen: Toddlers will have the opportunity to explore the sensory experience of sand and water as they combine the two in an outdoor
kitchen setting alongside their peers.

Chalk-sicles: Toddlers will have the opportunity to draw with a new medium of frozen chalk-paint on the sidewalk areas.

Inclement Weather Activity:

Potato Heads: Toddlers will have the opportunity to use their fine motor skills to use the pegged accessories to decorate their own Potato Heads.
Children will also be able to stamp their accessories in the play dough.

Home Activity: Cause and Effect Tubes:

This week in class we are focusing on exploring different cause and effect activities. Through cause and effect, children are able to find the
answer to the question, “What would happen if….” Children benefit from the opportunities to use logical thought and work through the scientific
method. They are really interested in dramatic results, and can make connections to their actions and results of those actions. The children will have
the opportunity to see what happens if they shake an egg with beads in it, touch frozen things to hot cement, mix sand with water, put a magnetic
line over a magnetic fish, and push blocks over with different tools. Teachers will emphasize this theme by expounding on the toddlers’ experiences
and encouraging them to explore the activities fully.
At home, you can continue to give your child cause-and-effect experiences. Attached is a corner of a PVC pipe with a suction cup on the
back. You can put this tube anywhere on a hard surface, and use different mediums to pour into it. The intended use of the pipe is to put it on the
tub wall, and allow your child to pour water into it and watch it come out the other end. Through this take home, your child can have a cause and
effect activity in the tub. They can also practice their fine and gross motor skills as the scoop cups full of water to pour into the tube. You can
incorporate language as you label the objects they are using, or parallel talk to them by telling them what they are doing as they do it.
